| Omicron in Rochdale on 09:36 - Dec 18 with 2234 views | mikehunt | Just been reading about footballers' uptake of the jabs and they are statistically higher than other professions. JCB, apparently, are introducing a policy whereby they will not grant sick pay to employees off with COVID, who have not been jabbed. The footballers' union are up in arms about the prospect of this creeping in to football. However, footballers refusing to be vaccinated cite rumours that the jab can affect fertility and are concerned about the high number of sports people keeling over with heart problems etc. These seem valid concerns (as opposed to conspiracy theories such as being surreptitiously euthenised). It's a tough one in my view: individual rights versus the common good. (And we have a staunch anti-vaxxer in our family). Incidentally, without naming names, how does our club fare with the take up of vaccinations amongst players? | |

It is a tough one - the eternal moral question. In the end I think the right of others to not be harmed by your actions/inactions overrides your individual rights. So you are free to not be vaccinated but there will be consequences - such as reduced contact with others. If you choose to live in a society presumably you have also to accept what that society determines as its preferred standards of behaviour, or face the consequences. Society has determined smoking is wrong so you can smoke but not where it might harm others and you pay additional taxes as an incentive to stop/'punishment for your choice'. Perhaps it would be better to 'reward' people for being vaccinated. Equally, as vaccinations do not guarantee non-infectiousness it would seem reasonable to accept alternative protections as a 'passport' to accessing services.

A vaccinated person will expel less virus because replication is slowed down by the immune system. Also due to this it is less likely a vaccinated person will be a vessel for another mutation to appear.

Where's everyone become totally obsessed with all the "have it to help everyone else" come from. The idea of folk going to see and get treatment from a doctor is purely to help the individual sat in front of him, when has anyone ever gone to a doctors and said "hi pal I fancy a flu jab this time around, not for me its just to help some other chap who's already had the opportunity to have 3/4 vaccinations already to help cover himself" it's bonkers

Vaccines aside, thinking about others isn’t that revolutionary. If you can do something that may help someone else now and again and it’s not much effort, then why not?

Whilst the apparent 90% of over 12s already vaccinated, its not really doing the best job of slowing transmission down looking at the current rates though? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Because it’s been established this variant has a higher vaccine escape. Prior to this, it was also established that vaccines do not stop people getting Covid entirely. They reduce its effects.

So we're demanding folk have yet another vaccine knowing the variant "escapes" the vaccine?

The idea that what makes a good life includes helping others is as least as old as the existence of primates, never mind homo sapiens - it ensured that food was gathered for primitive tribes; it's what nurtures the young of any species; it is still the basis of the social behaviour of all mammals and most other life forms. Even the fact you exist is down to the actions and care of others.

| Omicron in Rochdale on 17:50 - Dec 18 with 1834 views | richfoad32 | Totally sick of the whole thing, been going on nearly 2 years now without an end in sight. The best way for people to 'protect the NHS!' is to start taking a bit of responsibility for their own health and immune systems. But judging by the huge queues at ASDA this afternoon, trollies groaning under the weight of biscuits, chocolates, crisps, alcohol, fizzy drinks and other assorted crap, this isn't likely to happen any time soon. | | | |

Its pretty revolutionary regarding visiting a doctor just to help everyone else, here's a wild idea for sure but just go with it, because you may not actually want it, not to mention actually needing it, that's another story. I help other people every single day at work, it involves a fair bit of effort too generally, I have no problem with that idea one bit

Absolutely yet a totally different unrelated comparison,. You shouldn't be backed into a corner purely to "help others" at a possible detriment to yourself, not many would sign up to that dance...

Correct, while nearly 70% are "fully vaccinated" as of today, with god only knows how many others already with a natural immunity...imagine that an immune system doing exactly what it's designed to do.
