I fly regularly from Cardiff & Bristol. Given the choice I would choose Cardiff every time.
No queuing, no hassle car parking, no winding queues to get through security (like a throw back to the 80s compared to many modern airports), quicker & easier to get to by car. It’s got to be worth the extra cost in many instances imo.
The main problem with Cardiff is the lack of choice of destinations - that will always be the downside due to population density - & the poor public transport links.
20-25% of passengers passing through Bristol airport are from Wales, that must be frustrating - as long as so many keep crossing the border to fly from there will be no need for the likes of Jet2 or EasyJet to put flights on from Cardiff
Exactly. It's a chicken and egg situation. If those 25% said we'll fly from Cardiff then Jet2 and Easyjet would provide the flights. And the destinations. Then Cardiff would be profitable.
I’ve flown from Bristol several times this year and it’s not a great experience. The journey up is a nightmare and when you get there it doesn’t improve. The queues to check in and get through are security are lengthy and once you’ve got through finding somewhere to sit can be a real pain. F you’re on a red eye flight getting somewhere to eat is also carnage.
I’ve only flown from Cardiff once this year and it was a much nicer experience, we actually caught the train /bus link which cost just over a fiver- I was really impressed. Getting through security etc was a breeze and there was plenty of space for a drink in the bar.
The flight was packed and it was also cheaper than flying from Bristol which was a surprise because it’s normally the other way around. Cardiff was a much nicer experience, but it doesn’t have the range of flights Bristol has. I don’t think Cardiff can compete with Bristol anymore, but there’s no reason why it can be a commercially viable under the right management.

So the Welsh Government run airport is failing and costing the Welsh population money. Nobody will disagree that they would rather fly from Cardiff but Welsh people continue to go to Bristol, the facts can't be denied. The Welsh Government have just not got it right, I wonder if this will be a topic in next year's assembly elections.

There lies the fact. Cardiff would be your choice but you fly from Bristol. Hopefully the next Welsh Government will get it right or shut it down.

Macquarie Asset Management is the majority owner of Bristol Airport, having recently acquired a 55% stake from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. Macquarie completed the acquisition in early November 2025. .
It was Macquarie w Bank who almost Bankrupted Thames Water and did a pretty poor job other than enriching themselves. I presume it is the same business. The bank once gave a bridging loan to Swansea.

TBH who cares who owns Bristol Airport they are knocking spots off the Senedd owned Cardiff airport. Would so many Welsh passengers use Bristol if Cardiff supplied a product they wanted not a chance, they would use Cardiff. The Labour controlled Senedd will be gone in 6 months, let's see how things pan out with the next Welsh Government, if its Plaid they will not be so generous with taxpayers money or they won't last. The Welsh government waste is about to end and not before time.

But you are quite happy to profit when a government privatise a state owned company as they did with water companies along with others like gas and electricity. OK let's put some facts to you ridiculous post. There has been no figures made public for the last financial year ending March 2025 or March 2024, I wonder why with the Senedd elections due.
The £4M you quote was for the last financial year actually declared for year ending March 2023. The declared loss was actually £4.5M and they received a Welsh Government grant of £5.3M for that financial year.
The Welsh Government agreed a £205 million grant over 10 years to Cardiff Airport last year and the first £20M was paid in April 2025. There is no guarantee that this is the only grant the Airport will require over this 10 year period, but it is the amount that has currently been pledged. There is currently a legal challenge to this grant yet to be resolved.
I am just putting some clarity to your absurd £4M a year funding from the Senedd claim. Any new Welsh Government do have the option to witholld the any of the £205 grant, probably around the £160M mark when they take power next year. There is no guarantee it will continue, it could well be in a party manifesto. But as seen by the Westminster government manifesto policies can change.

The grant is not to improve infrastructure.
The grant is actually for attracting and growing aviation and aerospace businesses linked to the Airport. Like all Welsh Government funding/grants there are targets set that must be achieved to maintain the terms of the agreement. It often depends how rigidly these terms are adhered, failure can result in funding/grants being removed.
The appeal by Bristol Airport has been official lodged with The Competition Appeal Tribunal with the substantive hearing is due on 9th February 2026 and should last two days. Everything should be clearer after that.
