| Ashes thread on 14:06 - Dec 5 by TheChef | We keep saying they should so all these things, but we know that they won't. Only upside of all this is assuming we lose the series (badly?) then heads will roll and maybe we'll have a new setup that takes red ball cricket seriously again. |
'Take Red Ball Cricket seriously again' Chef I don't expect to have to tell you again... Stop being silly!! Don't let me have to tell you again

| Ashes thread on 17:51 - Dec 5 by joolsyp | I don't get what Jamie Smith offers. That was a poor drop of Head when he was on 3 and batting-wise he looks very naive and scared when he comes to the crease. Mind you they all look scared facing Starc! |
I was a big fan of Smith but recently (and in particular this series so far) he has failed to impress for sure

| Ashes thread on 15:02 - Dec 5 by lassel | There’s lots of things we *should* do… Margot Robbie *should* ditch her husband and marry me instead but here we are. In reality they’ll stall until twilight, put us in and have us 6/7 down by close. |
I mean, let’s be honest, Margot Robbie probably *shouldn’t* do that.

| Ashes thread on 13:52 - Dec 5 by Hunterhoop | Bowled too short too. And the other reason they scored so many runs in that rgeion was Stokes’ a refusal to put a 3rd man in for most of the innings. It was infuriating. If the bowlers are struggling to pitch it up successfully, then out a 3rd man. Free runs every over. Fundamentally, this England team looks undercooked. They don’t look like they have played much cricket recently. 9 ducks in 3 innings. Dropped catches. Bowlers 5mph down on pace from the first innings they bowled. It all screams they are short of cricket. Funny that. The problem with this England set up is that it doesn’t seem to accept it could be wrong (as well as the lack of accountability stuff I posted on this thread the other day). England have to bowl them out for around 400 tomorrow, and then gain parity no more than 1 or 2 down. And then they need to grit out the 3rd session. If they lose wickets in that session wafting away, they deserve all the criticism they will get. If they show some resilience with the bat tomorrow, they could finish the day around 120 ahead, hopefully for the lose of only 3, maybe. If they can bat the two sessions on the 4th day, they’ll have a 300+ lead, AND Aus beginning their innings under lights with a new ball, which puts them in the box seat (shame we have no spinner for day 5). However that whole strategy relies on batting time. These day night tests are all about how you manage time so you’re bowling and batting at the opportune times. It requires brains. |
Dream on! | | | |

If she can bowl or bat, the selectors should most likely contract her before she should call you… M Robbie, left arm, China-woman - from the pavilion end.

There are batsmen in our team that have either not made the step up as expected or are incredibly inconsistent. Crawley, Pope, Stokes would place these three in the inconsistent pile. On their day, brilliant but too often out for low scores. Brook, Jacks, Smith in the not there yet for me. Surprised Jacks selected here. He is a one day player. Hardly played any county games in last two seasons. Smith is another really who is a one day player. Brook just plays every ball like he must make a boundary. Quelle surprise he then makes mistakes !!!

You know with central contracts now I'm just not sure our cricketers play enough red ball cricket. They just don't spend any time in the middle.

Yes, back in the day, playing 16/17 (after Durham got first class status) first class county games plus B&H, NatWest, Sunday league games alongside playing test matches and ODIs was far too much cricket. It's now gone completely the other way playing virtually nothing at all in-between test matches. There needs to be a happy medium.

Money talks.... At home t20 and the hundred makes the big bucks. Top players go to the IPL and Big Bash. County Cricket is low on the priorities. And on a central contact too, zero chance to play. But, why not take the opportunity of warm up game in between tests. Thats not looking too clever now, either !!

| Ashes thread on 09:00 - Dec 6 with 872 views | PhilmyRs | Not over yet. Wicket is as flat as I remember in Brisbane. It is comical Australia thought it made sense to leave Lyon out. We bat well, there’s a big score out there. But that’s the challenge, can we adapt and be more game smart - see out Stark and not play reckless - I still have my doubts but hope I can be proved wrong. | | | |

The pitch is flat enough to make that happen but I wouldn't trust this England team and even if we set them a target we're going to need to bowl a hell of a lot better
| Ashes thread on 09:40 - Dec 6 with 800 views | DWQPR | We were sold Bazball on the basis that we would win back the Ashes. First 18 months it was fun but then other teams started to suss us out. No plan B. Batsmen looking foolish getting out with awful shots (Brook the master of stupidity there). Bowlers encouraged to continually bowl short which I suspect adds to their injury woes. We have a master bowling in this test pitching the ball up and although aided by more awful shot choices is hoovering up wickets for fun. And yet we still bang the ball in short. In the last couple of years we have lost series away to Pakistan and India, it looks like we will be hammered here. We failed to win our home series against Oz and India and even lost a home test against Sri Lanka who themselves were undercooked in the first test. McCullum has failed miserably and should fall on his sword at the end of this series. And whoever is responsible for the preparation for this series should go as well. I get that the England team didn’t fancy playing second XI state sides but to be fair, any amount of cricket in their legs is better than none. Alternatively they could have organised a short provincial tour of South Africa where pitches are similar to Australia. Instead they just rock up after a short one day tour of NZ where some of that team weren’t even part of the Ashes squad. Sheer arrogance. | |

| Ashes thread on 09:40 - Dec 6 with 801 views | CateLeBonR | It’s been an improved performance so far overall. To stand a chance of getting anything out of this match (win or draw) I think England will need to bat out the rest of today and most of, if not all of tomorrow. Seems unlikely but we live in hope. | | | |

| Ashes thread on 12:32 - Dec 6 with 315 views | Pindarus | The tactics have been terrible. Bowling short and wide is meat and drink to the Aussie batsmen. Only Archer pitches the ball up and he is our best bowler. The Aussie know that they just need to bowl straight and we will do their work for them. As for wicket keeper, we select a player who isn't even first choice keeper for his county because he can bat well, but when he doesn't, we have no alternative. Mccullum out!!! | | | |
