Just going back to the Den Bosch win in 1979, we murdered them. It came at the start of the season following an incredible escape from applying for reelection in 78/9 when we won seven of the last eight games. Under player manager Doug Collins. It turned out that it was Peter Madden pulling the strings. The next season, under Collins then Bob Stokoe was a disaster, leading to the controversial reelection by one vote at the expense of Atrincham. | | | |

That's news to me about Peter Madden pulling the strings. He was a decent manager for Dale (and a great landlord at Tophams Tavern in Smithy Bridge afterwards - i knew his daughter Carole) but it's the first i've heard about the connection during Doug Collins' "great escape"

Then after the Collins and Stokoe debacle he became manager and built a decent side giving us our highest placing since relegation. I am sure credit was given to him for pulling strings behind the scenes and the effect of the caretaker period which included our first away win for about 18 months 4 0 away at Scunthorpe over Christmas in 1978. | | | |

Likely you're right, not doubting you, just that i didn't take anywhere near as much interest in what was happening off the pitch in those days

I could be wrong, but I think the three signings he made were future captain Brian Taylor, defender Peter Creamer and a decent goalscorer in Chris Jones to partner Terry Owen. | | | |

Thank you, wasn’t aware of that one. The only additional reference I can see online is at the rsssf.org website detailing Anglo-Scottish fixtures since 1872. Not a complete archive by the looks of it but quite impressive.
