Great first interview with Ian Watson..

Speaks well and full of positivity throughout.

He mentioned we will be running a lot and intensity.. great stuff.

On the club website now, sorry no link here.

Really good interview. I liked the similar playing style comment but with intensity and lots of running. Sounds like we will be pressing more.

Seems like he was on the Boards shortlist from the moment McNulty decided to let it be known he was moving on...Well done the Board!
Also good to hear that his phone is already ringing , agents, players, well wishers etc.
And now we wait to see what unfolds in terms of new signings... let the rumour mill begin!

Purely my wishlist from the Free Transfer lists :
Jamie Allen (Coventry), Jason Kerr (Wigan), Luca Ashby-Hammond (Plymouth), Mitch Clark (Port Vale ), Aaron Lewis (Mansfield), Jordei Osei-Tutu (Bolton )

I have it on good authority that Jamie Allen would love to end his playing days at Rochdale....

If all those offered terms sign (Edwards, Hendo & Smith), we would have 15 players over aged 21 or 22 (Edwards is 18 so would not count), that means to meet the 22 outfield squad of players over aged over 22. That we could in theory sign 7 players aged over 21, plus goalkeepers.

Lincoln are interested in Jamie Allen,

So I would look to sign: (+ available for transfer, * released)

Hayes (winger - Peterborough)+, Connolly (def/mid - Stockport)*, Jason Kerr (CD - Wigan)*, Mitch Clark (LB - Port Vale), Clarke Odeur (LB/Mid - Bradford), Aaron Lewis (RB/Mid - Mansfield)* plus a striker (I would love Jay Bird 'doubtful if we could get him')

Also - Aged U-21 - George Nevett (CD - Peterborough)

Jay Bird missed nearly all of last season due to injury, we carried too many players last season so Bird would be a no for me. Especially with Rodney also being fragile.

Interesting to hear how he’s watched us a lot and how the way we play resonates with him. Obviously there will be some differences in approach, but it looks like Watson was always the main target of the club because he was a good fit to how we want to play. He also made mention of the attention to detail tactically, something others have said is one of his big attributes.

Speaks really well and the focus around everyone being in it together will stand us in good stead.

Yep. Sounds good. The only snag with getting a decent up-and-comer, though, is we won't hang on to him for long: whereas you have more of a chance of hanging on to a has- been that can still cut it in the lower divisions.
You can't do right for doing wrong sometimes.

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

A lot of truth in that, i hope Camerons started the succession planning πŸ˜€. The only expectancy i have for next season is that we establish ourselves back in this league and we play a brand of footbal that everybody enjoys. I'm also expecting that not all the retained players will fit into Watsons high energy style of play and some of those who were instrumental in our promotion last season might find themselves surplus to requirement. That's normal when a new manager takes over and inherits players. He and his coaches will be able to judge by what they see on the training ground and he's already stated that energy, intensity and running are high on the qualities required. Some players might not be able to hit those levels but this is no longer non league its a higher standard which will become apparent when the season starts. We have to get better and keep improving anyway. McNulty built a team to get us out of the National League and they did brilliant, the challenge now for these players is to go up to the next level and perform.

I see this season as one of development for the manager, he's going to need at least two, maybe three transfer windows to build his own squad. There won't be 30 wins in a season, as a fan base we will have to adapt to losing games again and being a average sized fish in a big pond. Teams wont sit off us and show us the respect they did in the National League, every game is going to be tough. It sounds to me that we are going to fight fire with fire, we wont be subserviant to anybody and we wont be circumspect and passive. if they're going to beat us they will have to out work and out fight us first. Rock and roll football, bring it on.

Whilst i agree with much of that, i think there's a danger of us over=estimating the change in quality from NL to L2 - the "Rochdale division"

No-one's under-estimating the step up either - let me make that perfectly clear, and least of all our new manager - but it's not exactly a standard with which we're unfamiliar

The difference between the better teams and those that struggle is largely one of teamwork and togetherness, with a touch more quality. I'd also be just fine with re-establishing ourselves whilst IW builds his own team by adding to those who're already capable of matching up, but the qualities he's inheriting are already there and he might just be able to pull a few more strings in terms of tactics and intent out of our existing squad

I hope that does eventually happen as that will mean that we have done very well and possibly got promoted.

I'm not over estimating the jump up in quality, i'm not convinced that some on the retained list will bridge that gap and whether some have the physical attributes to play a high intensity game involving a lot of running. You can go through that retained list and probably pick out four or five yourself without me naming them. They were suited to McNulty's patient, slow build up from the back and lets face it we didn't seem to engage in the physical side much, flying into tackles etc. Others should be fine.

Watson stated on the radio he will be watching back performances from last season, i would be surprised if he hadn't have already done that. He doesn't have to stay loyal to anybody, he needs to pick what he perceives to be his best starting eleven and that will obviously include new signings. It's up to everybody to impress during pre-season and stake a claim to play in that first game at Tranmere in seven weeks time.

You're right, i could pick a handful out, but i wasn't specifically thinking you were over-estimating the higher level, more the kind of "vibe" that it's a major leap

It's probably just me that, i do actually think the overall standard will be a big leap. I watched quite a lot of EFL2 last season and the football is a lot quicker, more physical and higher quality. That's how i interpreted what i watched anyway. Apart from the top seven or eight clubs i thought the standard in the National league was pretty poor. It's more apparent i think when you watch the games on television. Maybe we can revist this discussion at Xmas, it will be interesting to make a comparison and also see which of the retained players have made the step up and which ,if any, have struggled

It was observed during the season that we tended to raise our game against the better teams in the NL. Against some of the lower half teams we might have been guilty of a bit of complacency (Brackley away, Morecambe home spring immediately to mind) and i'm pretty sure that won't be happening under Watson's watch

I've also posted recently about our step ups from L2 to L1 (or previous iterations) and the main difference being pace, especially speed of thought. I think we've both got a pretty good grasp of what's required and i'm confident our new head coach has too

When Watson said the playing still will be different to what is usually seen in League 2, do you the was referring to the physicality?

Still no mention of Carl Magnay on official sites nor what is happening to Jason Taylor, Matty Done or Josh Lillis. Perhaps still in negotiations with Stockport before anything formal can be announced.
