With all the comings and goings and excitement at San Spotty,is anyone getting remotely interested in what is just about to start over the pond?

I think, looking at the England squad we have a really good chance.....there is a depth of talent without doubt.

Must say though I am not getting the purple haze about the competition and prefer to follow what's going on locally.

Just hope Haiti do well.

What do others think?

and Ghana/DRCongo weren't turgid affairs?

Southgate brought pride, bonding and no little success to a national team which, as Bellingham said last night, often crumbled in the past.

Tuchel has built on that using many of the same players with more in-game tactical flexibility and a justified obsession with balancing a team rather than stars.

There hasn't been a clamour from top English or European clubs to employ him. England crumbled under Southgate. He was a nice man and a safe pair of hands but to win at the highest level i think you need to be ruthless, i never saw that in him. I'm not saying Tuchel will ultimately be successful but i prefer his personality and passion to Southgates.

You must know more about the recruitment plans of English or European clubs than me.

Firebrands with ruthless passion - many South American teams and one or two political leaders have been accused of it but personally I'm not a fan.

Apart from the tournament successes you overlook, your dismissal of Southgate as 'nice' ignores his calm, courage and resilience to take on the racist attitudes within our fanbase; to reinvigorate support for England and our multi ethnic team and to rebuild players' self-belief which Tuchel is benefiting from and which will prove greater than those tournament successes.

Personality and passion come in many guises - from Gandhi to Genghis Khan; I know which I prefer.

I think you're looking into it a bit too deep. Anybody who calls out racial behaviour needs applauding. The discussion is whether Southgate was the right man to win a trophy. The FA appointed Tuchel because they believe we have a better chance with him at the helm and i agree with them. Take the issue up with the FA not me. The racial abuse aimed at the England penalty takers, i view that as two seperate issues. The knuckledraggers who did that need taking out of society, never mind football stadiums. The decision to put those young lads forward to take those high pressure penalties was rank bad management by Southgate, irrespective of the skin colour. A lack of ruthlessness and a poor decision. I was glad to see the back of Southgate, he waved the white flag against Italy with his defensive tactics. I would never compare Tuchel to Genghis Khan and Gandhi had his faults also, just like Southgate. I don't see any top clubs queueing up to appoint Southgate, a indication that he's not in their plans.

Southgate was too negative and lacked tactical flexibility. Most of the racist abuse on social media directed at Rashford, Saka and Sancho after they missed penalties was shown to originate in the Middle East and the Asian subcontinent.

There is a minority of racists who attatch themselves to the England team though, that can't be denied. It's not unique to England, many Countries in Europe have the same problem, some a lot worse. The most disgraceful targetting of a England player though wasn't racist, it was when Beckham received a red card and effigies of him were hung from lamp posts. Something very few seem to mention these days.

Talking of Southgate, does anyone else find it slightly strange that he isn’t working as a pundit at this World Cup?
Unless he’s deliberately turned down offers to keep at a distance from England performances.

Watching games that kick off in the early hours (last night excepted) might have some viewers struggling to keep awake, without the added doze factor of Southgate

From the above article

Southgate described the abuse, which came after those players missed penalty shots during a shootout tiebreaker in the final, as “unforgivable” but added that “a lot of that has come from abroad.”

His words echoed findings released in March by the Premier League, which has monitored online attacks on players, staff members and officials since 2019, showing that 70 percent of the abuse typically came from outside the U.K.

The police unit said that of the 207 criminal social media posts identified on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, 34 accounts were identified as being in the U.K.; 123 — more than half — belonged to people outside the U.K., and their details were being shared with the relevant countries. It was waiting for information from social media companies about 50 account holders.

British police did not immediately respond to questions about their methodology.

I think the methodology point is important. I have seen a five hour window mentioned and also the level of criminality of the posts. Both of which can skew statistics. And whilst we do have our fair share of racists. It is not only 'white English males' dishing out the abhorent abuse.

Extra tariffs on waffles on the way.

Trump did Belgium a favour…the player in question had a stinker.

Message to Pochettino….be careful who your friends are.

Tbf, Pochettino is unlikely to be a 'friend' of Trump any more than say, Eddie Howe is friends with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia...

It's FIFA that's at fault in the matter of the red card being "suspended". Should they have had pressure applied on them? They've demonstrated they're vulnerable to pressure, so that's now out in the open

One thing that seems to help the flow of the games is referees appear to to realise it is a contact sport and that every nudge is not a foul, just tell a player to get up or ignore it completely.

A smart pochettino might have left him out of the side giving the bloke a rest from all the adverse publicity and showing the rest of the world they were not benefitting from unfair advantage. The bloke looked to be a broken man at the end of the game and Belgiums coach had some consoling words with him.

That would also have avoided the ‘ rest of the world are Belgians’ scenario that resulted from the FIFA-Trump conspiracy,

Agree with that

Not starting with Balogun would've been a really good way of taking the heat out of the situation

Got to feel sorry for Egypt having 1 goal disallowed (it was a foul in the build up) but they also had a penalty shout waved away just before the Argies scored their winner.
Strangely although there were several replays of the foul committed just before Egypts chalked off effort there were none to show whether Salah had been impeded or not just before Argentina went up the other end & got their winner!!
Anyone would think there’s something fishy going on… & if Blatter of all people is weighing in about Infantino & the Balogun saga…

Yes, that was particularly "erm..." suspicious

Tbf though, Egypt had another great chance when they broke upfield only to mess up the final ball to put a man clear in on goal

Exactly, if it were not for Sir Gareth, England would have continued on the impotent let-down course it had been on. He came in and made it nice to play for England again; made it a place where players wanted to go. It is widely discussed by former England players how different the environments were and how it was a key factor in starting to realise English potential.

He was exactly what the leader of a national team should be: eloquent, respectful, and inspiring true pride in the flag (rather than hoisting it up lamposts).

Unfortunately, his tactical skills and performance under pressure let him down, and sadly he either never requested or he was not provided with some assistance to bolster this side of things.

It was identical with Jimmy Mc for me; it was clear from his 1st interview that he was exactly what was needed to reset the 'toxic'/losing environment at Dale, reconnect the fans, give the club pride again - it was predominantly what he talked about. BUT, as we all saw in year 2, he had big weaknesses, and either he, by request or the club by offer, added to his team, which completed the puzzle, and away we flew.

Had Southgate had this 'old sage'/braver character around him, I am certain those semi final/final flops would have been different.

I like Tuchl a lot, but his selection of several crocks in the squad shows that all managers have weaknesses and falabilities; like us all, they are human.

Come on England

A good post that and very fair. I agree about flags on lamp posts also, i love the England flag a lot but it always looks better on a flag pole. One in every Town and village would be great and leave it like that. Showing pride in your country of birth and it's flag should always be encouraged, as it is in every other country. The Club sell a very good England flag with the Dale badge in the middle for £14, i purchased one a couple of days ago.

The thing that impressed me about Tuchel was the gracious way he dealt with the potentially hostile reception by the hosts. Mexicans had kept previous opponents awake all night before their game, with noise, revving motors, music etc outside their hotel

Tuchel had it sorted and instead of complaining, welcomed the atmosphere and praised their enthusiasm. It worked. It took the pressure off his players and that showed in the performance. At the same time, you can see him continually pushing them to do better during games... like a fan, really

His defensive organisation lacks something, but when we were up against it in the last quarter his subs and low block saw the game out, the players responding magnificently. Rare to see this with England. That game will live in the player's bank of career memories, as well as fans memories

Will we go all the way? It's not beyond us, just need that bit of luck at key moments. We've seen how vulnerable other teams are too, such as Argentina yesterday. That was my purpose in posting when they were 2-0 down, not to make out the game was over. The best team still looks like France, but they're not unbeatable by any means. Will be interesting to see how Tuchel deals with the threat of Haaland. Stones knows his game and with others out injured / suspended, seems like time to deploy him
