| Stokes to retire after NZ series 15:31 - Jun 28 with 3720 views | D_Alien | Just one more full day to go... I really don't blame him. Posted on the test thread that there were knives out for him among the cricketing establishment (probably for McCullum now, too) and he may well have decided to make his decision, being his own man Hope it's a great last few sessions for him Edit: well, he just taken another wicket! | Stokes to retire after NZ series on 16:53 - Jun 28 with 3552 views | isitme | The timing is really strange. Surely it could have been announced overnight or before the start of play tomorrow, unless it was going to be leaked anyway? There is obviously a power struggle, coupled with a decline in Stokes' batting prowess which has seen a parting of the ways as inevitable. Key and McCullum need to follow him, although I am not sure the ECB are prepared to pay him off. There is a bit of time before the Pakistan test series to sort out a new, permament captain and look at the balance of the side. I have been saying for a long time that Ahmed should bat at 7 and then have four seamers. Make an investment in him as our next all rounder. There is no obvious captain so I suspect Brook will end up captaining everything unless they take the white ball captaincy off him. [Post edited 28 Jun 17:44]

Should still be a good watch tomorrow [Post edited 28 Jun 19:35]

| Stokes to retire after NZ series on 18:51 - Jun 28 with 3370 views | isitme | What a pathetic end. I get Stokes having a crack but then play sensibly. Brook's shot was awful. He is so talented but cannot seem to be able to construct a major innings anymore. Duckett got out to a decent ball but the rest gave it away. | | | |

Brook unfit for captaincy, wasting his talent on the "bazball" vibe. Perhaps when Baz has gone, someone with some degree of maturity will help him acheive his potential

| Stokes to retire after NZ series on 19:48 - Jun 28 with 3253 views | EllDale | Perhaps someone who isn’t in the current gang needs to come in as captain. Bairstow perhaps? And there should be a place for Alec Russell in the setup too, perhaps instead of Key. Jonathan Trott as coach also, in other words a complete reset. Key and Baz shouldn’t have survived after the Ashes debacle. | | | |

I didn't know Russell had taken up cricket after his disgraceful treatment by Barrow...

Able to be rational and not over-react to individual results? Yes. |

Took it up as soon as Docherty picked Thackeray over him at Anfield.

Under his Captaincy England went from awful to unbelievable. Oh for those days. We’re now in as big a shambles as i can ever remember. Stokes could have gone down the Root route and stood down as captain but still carry on playing. His pride however has stopped that option. With Stokes gone, who is next captain? Brookes? Please god, no. Bethell? Please don’t make me laugh. Root? The only option for me. What a mess.

251 wickets, only the third all-rounder to achieve 250+ and 7000+ runs after Sobers and Kallis Can't see Root wanting it beyond the next series, and therefore we should look to give someone a run as captain during this summer. Problem is, who's going to do the captaincy selection, with McCullum and Key's heads on the block? So, start the series against Pakistan with Root, but look to bring in a new management team who can choose their captain before the end of the summer and give them chance to start turning things their way. No idea who that might be... Edit: one of only two... Sobers took 235 wickets [Post edited 29 Jun 0:38]

Some found it self-indulgent and childish... like a sulky 5 year old. We lost a Test match we could and should have won against an injured and inexperienced NZ bowling attack. Time to dismiss the Liz Truss approach to Test cricket?

Unfortunately I think that of the 3 positions under discussion, replacing the captain is the most difficult. No obvious captain ready to go so I would pick someone inexperienced with potential ( as captain and player) rather than a stop gap, and ensure he is fully supported. 9 tests until the next Ashes start including a tough 3 match series against South Africa. If we end up with 3 different. Having said that I can't really pick who that might be !!

I hinted at the self-indulgence, but will grant him the leeway given what he's put into English cricket I don't disrespect the NZ side enough to suggest we should've beaten them. That triple-hundred first wicket stand, alone makes your claim insupportable, let alone the greater discipline throughout including Mitchell's fine century Onto the next stage without our talisman, and perhaps a more consistent approach

That's pretty much in line with what i suggested, with the caveat that the decision on captain is pending a renewed management setup. It'd therefore be wrong for a new captain to be installed (except as a stopgap) until that's settled [Post edited 29 Jun 16:28]
