Barton's apparent blindness to Burnley players standing in the way of a few of his passes wasn't the main problem. Barton's pass completion in the Championship was very high when he Carroll and Kranjcar were weaving pointless patterns on the halfway line. I understand the "reasons" you state, and there is some truth there but it's still him passing the ball unsuccessfully and still him choosing to "force the play" and play "hopeful balls". That's the problem.
Whatever the reasons, it's still poor passing from him.
And he did the same in the Championship, he just didn't get punished as much for it as he does now. We also spent hours in the championship needlessly passing it back and forth between the defence and midfield, when we had one goal leads, in some perverse attempt to make out we were the Barcelona of the Championship, when instead It was just phenomenally dull. |  | | |

Fer for me. Absolutely useless in 99% of the things he does. Doesn't tackle, doesn't track back, cannot control a wet bag of cement and cannot pass a ball. Forget all this bull about being played out of position, he is just a very poor footballer. At least Barton for all his faults can do three of the four basics I listed. | |

It is difficult as we left Barton out against Sheff Utd and gave Mutch a go and we all know what happened there. He has spoken a lot since the Saturday game but he needs to look within and sort his game out and fast. He'll play against Utd.
Going back to OP, Austin apart, it could be anyone. He needs to pick players in their most natural position and give them a chance. Keep it simple especially away from home and work on a structure to get our better players on the ball in the final 3rd.
For Utd game I'd go 4-3-3 and play Taarabt & Vargas wide of Austin with Henry, Barton & Fer in the middle and keep the tempo high and the ball in their half. If Utd play 3 at the back all the better. |  | | |

i saw someone say they wouldnt have played zamora saturday and rested him for next weekend !! , what for?, to take him for a shave, then off to feed the ducks, then for a lunch that requires no mastication.

we done the budget on a crock when we may as well as played Henry and kept the money to buy a striker
only HR could go into a PL season with Austin (unproven) Zamora (shot ) and think that would keep us up , oh and the other player we have who can probably play upfront (vargas) we play Right wing
that sum total of 3 players was going to fire us to glory

Close between Fer and Joey, but would be Joey for me. His passing is awful, constantly gives the ball away and his corners and free kicks are usually crap. He is far too slow so never picks up any 'second balls' as he is not mobile enough. Plus with Joey he has to carry the weight of his enormous ago around for 90 mins so that must take a toll on him.
Fer annoys the hell out of me as I think there is a good player in there, he just doesn't seem bothered most of the time. He is one of the laziest midfielders you will see in the prem. But, he has scored goals so Joey gets the bullet from me. | | | |

I thought he did ok against Swansea for an hour but he's never going to be able to do it every week. Having another body next to Austin just to create space really helped us. I think Zamora can be effective from the start if used properly. United at home falls into that category but we've flogged him to death in games where he was never going to have any effect so he probably won't be as effective as he could be. If we're going to play a number 10 now off Austin in either Adel or Zarate then I doubt he'll start many more games this season | | | |
