TVOS Preview - Rochdale v Southend United (Playoffs) on 23:45 - May 15 with 4054 views
Good teams don't get to 3-1 up in big games and lose.. but as soon as the changes were made, we lost impetus and handed it to Southend... its the fatal flaw in the McNulty make-up. He has the uncanny ability of making the wrong decision at exactly the wrong time, his alarm goes off after about 65 minutes and the game goes out of the window, Its probably a complete section in a FIFA coaching manual somewhere but surely he must see what everyone else sees, Barlow was central to much of the good stuff we played and without him and Bird to worry them they just threw the kitchen sink at us....keep the winners winning is a very basic sports concept that McNulty doesnt seem to understand, maybe because he has never been a winner himself...always the bridesmaid, never the bride....2 key games where we have gone in front and lost at home in front of 5000+... so very disappointing , so very inevitable, so easily avoidable....

Especially under McNulty, I can see us in a doom loop now. Given the standard of the division I'd expect we're never going to be good enough to win it but should be good enough to be in the top 7.
The question then is can we string 3 results together against decent opposition and I just don't think we can and history says we can't. I suspect we'll be in a similar position in 365 days time.

2 free headers. Weak all night conceding 3 headed goals. We need some big strong defenders next season who want to defend. And a keeper who wants to keep the ball out of the net - not just be good with his feet.
Statues.

The bottom line is this: two games where new or occasional fans were given an opportunity to watch something that'd have them buying a season ticket, both wasted, both unnecessarily
I can't say i'm expecting anything to change next season either
Honestly believe season ticket sales and growing the fanbase will always be separate from individual games. Because it’s been proven to be the case when we’ve had big crowds and good results without significantly retaining fans long term.
Any neutral or new fan there tonight would have witnessed a cracking game of football and may not have acknowledged anything more than Dale went to pot after the subs. Were they ever going to get a season ticket if we’d won tonight? Who knows.
But would a boring 1-0 win passing it about at the back of helped either? Who knows. But not long ago some said it was the style of football that kept fans away. Well it doesn’t, because they were happy to return after Spennymoor again tonight. We can’t presume what they’re thinking, only look at the numbers that attend consistently for these games going back years.
Facts are we need to find out why we always manage to get good crowds for matches that are “occasions” and what we can do to get them to some back. This goes back two decades now.
None of this excuses the decision making that cost us the game tonight though. Mistakes from a manager who has made them too often in critical moments.

Thought Gilmore ran himself ragged.
Allarakia took a knock early on and never seemed right after that.
EEL gave it everything he had but I think his time is done.
Bird showed how much we need a big physical presence up front.
Can’t see Jim being moved on
Once Southend got their second the game just went away from us despite a couple of goalmouth scrambles.
Agree Gilmour was immense, so too Gordon, Rodney and EEBL but I fear Allarakia has been a defensive liability all season and tonight we had to swop Tobi with him to stop Southend's No 22 running us ragged down the right... which thus lost the highly effective Gordon/Tobi combination. The game seemed to pass East by too and agree the substitutions were pivotal in our handing momentum to Southend, I also agree there's a lack of ruthless winning at all costs mentality in the squad.

100% on Jim this loss.
The sub to put Hogan in the left CH position and Beckwith in the left wing back position, moving Tobi to right wing back lost us the game.
That was Jim’s decision and he made it.
Beckwith is a fantastic left CH. He is not a left wing back Hogan is a fantastic central CH. he is not a left CH.
Southend’s threat was 90% down their right/our left.
Jim had got it right by putting Tobi there with Beckwith after 20 minutes and nullified them notably. - He could have swapped Taryn for Buyabu, a left wing back. - He didn’t, he repeated the mistake at Oldham.
Taking off Barlow was odd, he looked more than fine Taking off Bird ok - bit more understandable Leaving on East for 105 minutes+ is inexplicable
No criticism of any player from me, they all gave their all.
Agree the Hogan change didn 't work although many managers would have done likewise but Beckwith played as a left wing back for Maidenhead... though you wouldn't have known from his performance tonight after the Hogan substitution. Southend's threat down the right had been in evidence for the first 20 mins before Tobi was swopped with Allarakhia and the threat returned even greater after the substitution.

The salient point is that the games in question will have done nothing to encourage any potential new regulars. It might've been a "cracking game" to the neutral but how many home fans walked away from the ground thinking that? The last hour of football will've wiped the first hour from memory
There's plenty of initiatives taking place that might overcome some of the seemingly intractable issues we've had in bringing more people through the turnstiles, but what happens on sunny afternoons in April and balmy evenings in May is very different from the hard winter slog through November-March. By the end of the game, the chill had set in again
If even just a few had left the ground with the feeling we were somehow different now, no longer "same old Dale", it would've been a start even without other initiatives. That just can't be put to one side as unimportant

And the Joe Thompson goal v Charlton in May saw everyone leave the ground joyous. As did the Ben Muirhead penalty. Yet our crowds haven’t grown in a way which has seen numbers retained.
As has been stated many times, results dictate mood amongst fans. Most in the Dale end would have gone home gutted. As it ever was down the years when we’ve lost on such occasions.
But nobody went home bored. So in an entertainment business where you can’t guarantee results, what can we do to get new/part timers to come more often? That’s the decade old question we’ve never answered as a club.
Again, a different issue to that tactical shortcomings of our management team over the season.

Yeah I was shocked at how difficult Beckwith found it to play that role. He couldn’t get positionally right, even before their second.
McNulty should have acknowledged his error much sooner and replaced Beckwith with Buyabu as soon as it went to 3-2.
Tonight is another "big" game, thrown away by a manager who appears incapable of learning from mistakes and whose game management last night was gormless at best. AGAIN. With "Sit back Jim", we handed Southend an opportunity that their players and management team took on with relish. Three goals in half an hour is the evidence. Another bigger than average crowd that fully got behind Dale left disappointed. AGAIN!
Jim has took us so far, well done, but his inability to improve, learn and change with experience is very concerning. The club will not progress without better tactical acumen from its manager. Can't see it coming.
Jim had earned the chance to contest the FA Trophy semi-final and the play-off campaign despite serious misgivings in his management methods. He's messed up both opportunities. At home. Surely this will have been noted in the boardroom?
Well done Kevin Maher and Southend. You deserved that win, gift wrapped as it was after 65 minutes. The better manager won. All the best at FGR and maybe Wembley.

Jim's post match comments are about as unsurprising as his in game management... he took around 2 mins to mention Southends "clout' and the 'changes they can make' with them being 'deeper than us'..... hes very selective is our Jim when he mentions 'clout'

Reading on here today has me embarrassed to support this club. Look where we was. Doubt about even having a club. Now we are blaming a guy who stood up in our lowest point and saved us and made us better and brought together the club. Yes we lost but think about the budget we have compared to other clubs. It happens in football but to blame the man who stuck by us is appalling. I’m ashamed to support this club today

Indeed. Never mentions "clout" when we win. Southend have had horrendous ownership issues for years.
The total lack of personal responsibility, and finding excuses for and diversions from last night's debacle (and others) in this is blatant. We know what we saw.

what a pathetic interview. Not one question about how we managed to give up a two goal lead late in the game, what was the thinking behind his substitutions, how we exited all competition through losing leads late in home games.
These interviews are an insult to fans.

The total lack of personal responsibility, and finding excuses for and diversions from last night's debacle (and others) in this is blatant. We know what we saw.
We saw a Southend Team and a manager who was clearly in charge. A manager who reacted positively to adversity and his players who relished the physical battle, smelled blood and reacted accordingly. They had more desire and belief, they sensed our soft underbelly and it was ultimately a game of men against boys. McNulty stated publicly on the eve of the match that we haven't transformed enough yet to return to the EFL..that must have been music to the ears of the Southend manager and players, the Dale manager admitting that we aren't good enough. A terrible message to send out to our players before such a crucial game.
We saw a Rochdale Team which we all know is a bunch of best mates and that includes the manager, it's why they all love playing for him. McNulty was yet again out managed and exposed in the heat of battle. A team lacking in character, hard nosed professionals, a team that can be bullied and one that doesn't seem to be held to account for poor performances. We don't have a manager, we have a coach, the players will all love him because he's a nice man but when it comes down to crucial games and pressure he wilts, hes a youth team coach. The team is a reflection of the manager and last night was a perfect example of that, too nice and no devilment. Always the bridesmaid and never the bride.
Look at the body language of McNulty in his post match interview and listen to his pathetic excuses, the fans are on the floor, devastated yet again. Defeat doesn't hurt him, he uses budgets and clout to disguise his failings as a manager. He insults the fans and also the Ogden family when he does that. He never mentions clout and budgets when we fail to beat Spennymoor and Ebsfleet twice and we throw numerous points away to the poorest teams in this league. He thinks we're all daft and he's some sort of intellectual footballing guru, donning a pair of designer spectacles and talking football speak doesn't wash Jim, we've been watching football longer than you've been on the planet.
We won't get out of this league with McNulty as manager, he doesnt have the personality to manage the type of players who you need to achieve that. The players who challenge everybody in the dressing room, players who will question the manager, players who have been there and done it, players with big personalities. We need a new manager, a winner, last night showed that. We won't get one though, not yet.
The next manager needs to be a Keith Hill type character, somebody who challenges everybody in the club, from the boardroom to the fans. When you have fans suggesting that last night was a free hit, that reflects the mentality that seems to permeate throughout the club. The whole ethos of the club has to change, there has to be a hunger and desire to win, a belief that we are good enough and its the manager and those in the boardroom who need to lead by example and bang the drum everyday in resoect of that. Start acting and talking like winners. We need a manager who wants to win at all costs and isnt bothered whether the players like him or not. Somebody who only focuses on winning and surrounds himself with winners. The total opposite of what we have now. Jim specialises in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, Bromley, Spennymoor and Southend tells you that. His in game management is terrible. It's all about performance for him instead of being all about results and winning. That's what we saw last night.

These interviews are an insult to fans.
He can head off on his close season break without having to concern himself with the prospect of planning for a higher division he believes we weren't (he wasn't) ready for
Said as much in his pre-match interview
I don't think he'd know how to handle it
When has he ever "talked us up"? Does defeat hurt him enough, or does he enjoy some aspect of consoling the players, like some sort of community support worker? That's what his interviews sound like to me, and it's a serious question
He's done enough to avoid any serious threat to his job - job done
The psychology of those substitutions last night were all wrong. Draw your own conclusions; i've drawn mine
Again so disappointing but entirely predictable. People were calling this, way way before the game. 'This is what will happen' and it did! Once again the managers substitutions and game plan gave the game away, lock, stock and barrel. We've seen it too often this season.
'Insanity Is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results'
Will someone please let me know when he's gone.

The entire ethos of the club is so ‘nice’ - epitomised by the saccharine social media output and the insipid, obsequious post match ‘interviews’. Sadly, being nice doesn’t win you anything.
Jim talks about overachievement - I think we were around par taking into account our average attendances and budget. Sorry, our respective ‘clout’.
Great to see Hilly there last night, before his regretful demise that man knew how to win - no fear.

Those substitutions were a disguised surrender..a waving of the white flag and a retreat. McNultys default setting, when the pressure is on take a backward step and hope we can hang on. Winning 3-1, the substitutions were a act of sabotage. Nothing learned from the Bromley debacle. No accountability from McNulty, no questions asked of him. They do that in North Korea.

That interview was awful. To not ask a manager about his decisions in the actual game we’ve all just seen makes the whole thing pointless.
If you want an end of season assessment, do that on another day.
