Kicks off next month with the news that Cummins is likely out of the first test and possibly most/all of the series. That helps.

The entire squad selection was faulty.

Entire top 6 written in with no alternative except Bethell who had never scored a century and looked totally out of depth in his solitary game.

No wicket keeper or reserve. Compare Carey with Smith - laughable.

At least 2 pace bowlers not up to standard, and one who is a walking hospital case.

No spinner to tie down one end. Jacks - I ask you!

A totally arrogant and blinkered approach with no plan B.

I hope Stokes stays for another year because Brook is no way captaincy material.

Mccullum and Key to go immediately, or at least at the end of the Ashes. At least 6 of this squad to be jettisoned.

A complete rebuild of the Australian team is in prospect so hopefully the next generation will not be all powerful, but I wouldn't bank on it.

All valid points.

I'd prefer Stokes to stay on as captain because I can't see any viable alternative (and definitely NOT Brook), but he may stand down anyway.

Yes Leach is no massive spinner of the ball and is never going to regularly spin teams out but I'm fairly sure he would have been able to tie an end down (unlike Jacks), put some pressure on their batsmen with a few maidens and try and let Stokes rest and rotate the pace bowlers properly like Cummins has been able to do with Lyon.

His economy rate in tests is a fag paper over 3 (3.08) and he has five five fors in 39 tests. As a comparison his strike rate in tests is not that much worse than Lyon's (61.4 Lyon, 66.2 Leach)

Would he really not have been the worst option at least to have in the squad?

Apparently Leach:

- Is terrible at golf
- Makes awful coffee

Maybe.

It's been a painful watch, going with a part time spinner and a part time wicket keeper was a bit mad. What was the point of playing Bashir for 3 years then ignoring him

It’s been an absolute sh*tshow that they’ll be talking about for decades.

I’m just watching New Zealand v West Indies at the bay oval. Its the Saturday of a test match and there’s hardly anyone there.
When I went there for the England test in 2023 it was packed out.

Clearly the squad choice was strange.

Am a Surrey fan, but the choices of Jacks and Smith was odd for me. They are both excellent one day and t20 players, but building an innings have not seen that before.

The incident when Carey ran out Bairstow for wandering out of his crease - Johnny said to Carey, thats all you will be known for. Not great sledging in hindsight, but for me, there is a case to bring back Bairstow as a wicketkeeper batsmen option. Yes one of the Rew brothers could step up, but feel bit too early.

Englands second innings will be interesting.

Will it be five sessions to survive. So there is no real reason to play bazball.

Its the last chance saloon for a while for some batsmen and if Crawley, Pope and maybe one or two others play a stubborn, long and battling innings in true test style, it could be a catalyst for a future in test cricket. I cant though see it happening.

The game could be over today.

Their bowlers are too good in Australia, even the back up bowlers too.
