Toast toppers, I think, or possibly a Buckinghamshire speciality my mum used to make: Bacon clanger. It was a large, round suet pudding with bacon in it, usually served with thick gravy, peas and mashed potato. Wonderful!

Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie. I’d fight anyone to be able to scrape the tin.
We had a few tins of these two weeks ago for a family dinner in a weekend country retreat (70s -themed due to golden wedding anniversary!)- I thought it tasted so much better than an expensive Steak and Kidney pie I'd eaten at a Covent Garden Restaurant (name withheld) a few days before! Kids thought they were great as well!

Vesta Chow Mein. The noodles crisped up in oil. It was the most exotic food I’d ever eaten and certainly beat my mums cooking which was, without exception, awful.

Was always the first meal I'd have when I'd return home to visit my folks and for my last weekend in the family home after my mum died, I made this dish. Enjoyed it with a Guinness. I teared up making it, while I was eating it, and when I cleared up afterwards.
I was in Ireland earlier this year and had it in a restaurant outside Dublin. I wrote to the chef afterwards because he absolutely 'kin nailed it. I thought if I went to speak to him afterwards, I'd have made an eejit of myself.
You might not believe this, but I made champ on Tuesday, didn't have any cabbage for colcannon.

Growing up late 60’s through the 70’s I don’t think we saw a ready meal in our house, everything made from scratch. My mum made some delightful deserts notably her apple pie with home made custard, hot and thick.

Everything really, I was a ravenously hungry child. A couple memories stick out though. We always had cakes in the house, my mum baked loads, after coming in from playing football I'd often have a whole cake, still in the tin, and pour a pint of milk on it. That and the bacon sandwich I'd have part way through my milk round, made by one of the many young women in the hotel kitchen we delivered to. Used to take ages to eat it though.
