That was a lesson we should've learned after Halifax pulled us back in the last 5-10 minutes, but tbh their goal came out of nowhere, first shot of any kind. We seem better at defending a one goal lead
On to Southend, and the potential to create clear water at the top
Defenders make mistakes. It happens and individuals at this level will always switch off from time to time. There was a need for forgiveness after Halifax rather than any overreaction. The four wins since justify that stance.
Also, on this occasion it may have had more to do with Bilongo having sustained an injury as he then went up front and Burger replaced him at LWB.

And yet, further balanced against that is the risk to a player having to stay on the pitch whilst carrying an injury, possibly making it worse, or going down to ten men
Whatever the circumstances, keeping one sub available carries less risk

I remember watching him play against us as a member of a fantastic Northampton team that beat us 5-0 at their old cricket ground home. Must have been around 1986 or 1987. Seems a very long time ago. I think he scored quite a lot that season.
Watched the game back on DAZN. Hard to see them scoring as it looked very comfortable. Crazy that both us and York aren't certainties for promotion given the results we are having.

Which in the context of Tuesday was just what we needed. Pettit’s performance will do him the power of good mentally, he really laid a marker down yesterday. Looking ahead to Southend they have the 3rd best defensive record in the league, so it is difficult to fathom why they have such a poor record against the teams above them in the league. It really won’t be easy on Tuesday and one of Southend’s strengths is playing hard until the final whistle. I would be sorely tempted at this stage in this game to keep the best eleven on the pitch for as long as possible. All to play for. Come on Dale.

Valid point re Southend and their ability to keep going strong till the end.
We know that from our own experience last season. Scored early and late yesterday (3 mins and 73mins) to be beat FGR but last week away at Carlisle loosing 2-0 came back to draw with late goals on 65 and 81mins.
This game is set to be a nail biter.

They've also recently drawn at home with Truro and Gateshead, and are currently 33 points behind us. They were also beaten at Spotland by an actual late goal.
Of course, they can be dangerous opponents and in our position, every game and point is so important, but let's not build them up to something the league table says they aren't.

Whereas similar tactical set-ups have served us well on our travels since August, Forest Green probably being the best example when we defended deep against an early season rival and still should have extended our lead on the break.
We do need to maintain sharp minds though, with yesterday being a positive reminder. You can bet how annoyed they all were to not keep a clean sheet. It isn’t so much back foot as being prepared to absorb pressure and fully confident when the structure is in place that they can do so.
Would not expect any change in approach now, it would probably lead to uncertainty.

Indeed, it is interesting to see it all play out, in individual games and reflecting on how it’s been an obvious long term plan to get to this stage. A culmination of over two years building the plan and structure, sticking to beliefs and getting maximum buy in from everyone.
That was what was most impressive yesterday. Despite York winning easily in a game we might have seen them experiencing some problems, we went about business in the same calm, composed manner we have all season long.
Should we drop points on Tuesday or after that, we can expect a response. That in itself is something unique to this current era.
One thing is for sure - there is a massive incentive for us winning our game in hand on York. A 5 point lead at this stage is absolutely massive and gives very little opportunity for York to afford any slip ups.

Best Dale goal I have seen this season..
Great strike.
On paper our run in looks tough.. Southend and Scunthorpe still to play away from home stand out on paper.
Of course we could beat Southend and then lose to Tamworth on Saturday!! We still have 27 points to aim for in 9 games and every win heaps pressure on York to do the same.
Just to add this team is very different to any other in recent history. They looked a very very good side on Saturday v Eastleigh.
91 points in 37 games bears that out, We are Top of league and deservedly so entering the business end of the season.
