| Refwatch - Scunthorpe United v Rochdale on 21:51 - Mar 25 by 442Dale | Exactly that. Two silly mistakes in a game when we defended well, played the conditions well and got it tactically right. Dieseruvwe was below par bar his contribution to the first and it’s such a shame that both the keeper and Burger’s mistakes meant their previous contributions were lessened. At this level, players will make errors. Question is, are we forgiving or is a case of overreacting? Everything else about the performance was right. |
It's vital that everyone keeps a cool head Mistakes happen under pressure, but that applies to both us and York The tweaks that we make with subs haven't been as effective as earlier in the season (even with Hendo scoring the winner last Saturday) and that's something that needs looking at [Post edited 25 Mar 22:13]

Exactly The Scunthorpe commentators said it was the best performance so far this season by their side. New keeper did 2 great saves. Wonder if we’d be better starting with Hendo on Saturday?

I was thinking the same. The last three games have gone 2-3 3-2 2-2 Hardly table topping form. I'm reminded of the April curse under K Hill, Let's hope it doesn't bite us again. And please please please for the remaining games, can we not sit back on a one goal lead.

We appear hamstrung from the bench with injuries and international call ups but once again defending a 1 goal lead has cost us. Key games are not being won. When they equalised we went right at them. Why leave it until then? Probably doesn't help that our main forwards have hit a downturn in form at the moment. Feels like a loss. Still love them though. 💙

That's because I've seen it all too many times. I said in our group chat at 2-1 unless we score a 3rd we ain't winning this. You could see it a mile off. We played far far too negative too - passing it backwards so many times. At one point at 2-1 Moss had a throw in on the edge of their box and 5 seconds later it was back with our keeper? Just be more positive and get it in the box? We desperately need some injured players back too - that last 15 minutes didn't look like a Championship winning team.

Defending leads and controlling the game is part of how we play though. Do we wish we’d capitalise on when we have good situations more? Of course. Even tonight after their first we looked calm and resolute again once it had settled down. Burger makes an error and then it’s 2-2. (Some of the abuse he’s received on Twitter is staggering btw) . We changed our game tonight to ensure we didn’t get caught passing it too much on a difficult pitch. The tactic worked. The mistakes then spoilt it all. Eradicate that and we win the game. As you say, we are conceding too many avoidable goals at the moment. Not sure what the answer is as it isn’t a structural or tactical issue. It’s on players themselves. Having TAR and Gilmour back would be a massive boost. It’s impossible to be certain, but we don’t drop points at Halifax or tonight if both were on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

What about when we were seeing games out playing the same way? Where was the complaints after Forest Green away for example? If fans want to panic, fine. The players shouldn’t though. Burger doesn’t make that mistake and it’s a great away win. And for the 964th time, we don’t sit back against Southend in the playoffs. We were far too open after some awful subs and kept going forward leaving gaps in behind Hogan.

After having so many options, being down to our last 17 players has definitively affected us. Hosannah being the only defender on the bench was always going to be a concern.

| Refwatch - Scunthorpe United v Rochdale on 22:36 - Mar 25 with 2658 views | NorthernDale | I would normally have been happy with a point at Scunthorpe, but at 2 up, I had hope then I thoughts of Halifax like many other fans. But it is becoming a common theme with the Dale, we get a lead and then sit back and invite teams to attack us and sadly we struggle. I understand the need to rest players, but sometimes I think McNulty does it for the sake of doing it and why does he keep bring on Hosannah, he is a very poor player at this level. I thought McNulty would have got the message after the Halifax debacle. But it is the same old Rochdale, have a chance to create a gap between us and York, but end up buggering it up, we can only hope York make another cock up, but I doubt it. | | | |

As frustrating that Jake lost the ball, it was a fookin great strike to get their goal. Jake didnt take that shot. Their first was, it appears, a lack of communication between the magnificent Perry and our on loan first game keeper.

I remarked at half time that we had got away with a lot of passing around at the back on what was a very poor surface. Ironically, we benefited from them making a bad mistake at the back just after half time. Soon after this, we did change the set up in that our wing backs dropped at least 10 yards deeper, which allowed Scunthorpe to come at us more. Yes...we were just about in control before a terrible mix up between defender and new keeper, but I'm not sure the subs helped our defence...in fact I'm sure they hindered it. A point would have been acceptable at 7.45 but having gone 2-0 ahead, it feels like Halifax again. Jim should be learning that its dangerous to drop deeper towards the end of an away game especially when we're missing key players to injury and international call ups. Onto another difficult challenge against a Sutton team who will be up for the challenge. East and Pettit were very good in centre midfield tonight and Rodney and Barlow were always a handful for them.

It was (and if I’m being picky East could maybe have done more to block it) with the subsequent abuse coming his way added to other overreactions missing that point. And that’s it, but for the factors around the first goal, we probably wouldn’t be here right now. Felt so sorry for Winterbottom who had an excellent debut bar that moment.

Conceding well earned 0-2 leads, away from home, with inept defending at Halifax and tonight is just so wasteful. Why can a record breaking 95 points from 40 games and a 3 point advantage on the second placed team be so frustrating?? Funny old game....

We’ve all seen it loads of times. I use the phrase “good things don’t happen to Rochdale”. However I remain hopeful that we will be successful. Contrary to the saying Hope never killed anyone, so I’ll gladly stay that way.

Think that’s the hard part now. It’s not really very enjoyable, even when appreciating all the good parts that have got us to this stage. Strange indeed. The game has changed.

Do you honestly believe then if we need anything against York on the final day we will do it? There is only one way we are winning the league and that's if we are 4 points or more ahead after the Braintree game.
| |
| Refwatch - Scunthorpe United v Rochdale on 23:10 - Mar 25 with 2308 views | Delboy | We simply never learn. We concede goals when in a winning positions because we seem to stop being the great team we are. We encourage the opposition to believe they have a chance by falling back and giving them control. As soon as Scunthorpe equalised today we went full throttle again and had them on the back foot but it was too late. If we had done that at 2-0 they were already looking dispirited and would have struggled to turn the game around. If we continue to do this when it comes to the key end of season crunch games against York or in the play offs I fear our tremendous season could end in heartbreak. The Manager and team have to start games with the mentality that one two or even three goal leads are not enough and keep striving to score more if possible. Gung-ho it maybe but when in the acendency attack is more effective than a rearguard action. Playing the 'dope on the ropes' can often end with a knock-out from a lucky punch. None of us can forget the Spennymoor debacle but there have been times recently when I believe the manager and players have. | | | |

I believe York are a better team than us. So analytically I’d expect them to win. I could be wrong of course. There’s a post on here where I set out that ‘four point gap’ scenario a couple of months ago. It was based on us getting to 109 points. What I try not to do is create comparisons to situations that are incomparable because the amount of variables have changed. Evidence suggests we are side who knows how to get results. Unfortunately recently that has swung with a couple of instances where we’ve fallen short. Then again, there is an example four days ago where we illustrated exactly how good we are at finding a way. Glass half full, glass half empty? Down to the individual fan. Expecting an outcome because it will back up an age old argument being proven right even if the link is tenuous? Again down to an individual fan. Not saying this is you btw. Only those who hold their opinions will know.

One reason, and one reason only - because it matters so much, to all of us It's about overcoming the attempt to sell our club down the river, a mercenary manager, almost going bankrupt after falling out of the bottom of the league after over a century of mainly tenuous survival Having it within our grasp to return, under truly great ownership, just needs us to retain our collective nerve. Starting with the manager and players, of course. We've been around for a lot longer than them, but our fate lies in their ability - not just as a very good football team, but on their having the bottle to see us over the line [Post edited 25 Mar 23:31]

Pertinent to this, remember Rochdale 0 Barnet 4 last season. It was commented on here that from the Main Stand, their manager was berating his team for not doing more even though they were battering us. They went on to deservedly win the league. Jim isn't like that, and we are deservedly top of the league to date. Perhaps Delboy's suggestion that more is demanded (and worked upon in training) is vital to secure all that has been achieved in the previous 40 games, rather than wasting those achievements being timid and sitting back?
