Under contract

Moss
Ebanks-Landell
Beckwith
East
Adebayo-Rowling
Bilongo
Gilmour
Pettit
Francis
Humbles
Hannant
Rodney
Dieseruvwe

We have a good spine that could challenge in League Two. I suspect Humbles might be made available for transfer.

Contracts expired

Gordon
Tutonda
Allarakhia
Gomez-Mancini
Pritchard
Barlow
Burger
Myles
McBride
Hosannah
Duku
Smith
Edwards
Henderson

Gordon signing a new deal would be excellent news. I would offer Pritchard a new deal as his versatility would be very useful. I also do not think we saw the best of him due to injury. The other players I would say thank you for your efforts, but we need to move on. Barlow maybe as a depth number 10 option?

Loans expiring

Whatmuff
Perry
Baptiste
Gordon

I would have Whatmuff and Perry back in a heartbeat, but I suspect they are destined for League One next season.

What do we need?

- Two goalkeepers – one to start and one to develop.
- Gordon to sign a new contract or a replacement if he leaves.
- Cover for Ebanks-Landell and Beckwith.
- Two starting wingbacks, preferably an actual left footer for the left hand side.
- Two number 10s with at least one who is direct and pacey like Hayes.
- A physical centre forward who could start if needed so there is not a massive drop off between Dieseruvwe and his back up.
- Another forward who could play the central role and wide if needed a sort of Henderson replacement.

A lot of this will depend on budget and how much we use the loan market.

GK; we need 2 (Myles may be offered a deal)

Defenders:
Moss, Ebanks-Landell, Bilongo, Beckwith
- offer Gordon a contract + recruit 2 CD's & a FB)

Midfielders;
East, Adebayo-Rowling, Gilmour, Hannant, Pettit, Francis, Humbles (I think may be offloaded)
- offer Barlow and Pritchard a contract
(Corey Edwards is out of contract, but if we offer him a new deal and lets he signs for Stockport for example, instead, will we get a fee due to his age)

Strikers:
Rodney, Dieseruvwe,
- offer Henderson (player-coach role), Smith + recruit 1 more striker

I would let everyone else go.

May I ask what are the rules on squad sizes in the EFL
[Post edited 14 May 9:15]

You can register a maximum of 22 players aged over 21. Unlimited U21 players can be used without registraion and goalkeppers do not need to be registered in the 22 man squad.

There is a famous phrase in business. If you stand still, you get overtaken. Bringing back so many players who struggled to make the bench is not going to cut it in League Two. We need to bring in players who will start.

Exactly. Sentiment wont win you matches in EFL2 and if players couldn't command a regular starting place last season why would they be able to do that at a higher level? We have to maximise the budget, i'm not even sure some of those on the retained list will now be of the required standard. They will certainly need better quality around them. It's a cut throat business football and managers have to be ruthless because they are ultimately the first one to lose their job if results aren't forthcoming. What we can't afford to do is get embroiled in a relegation dog fight and have a large squad of players who aren't fit for purpose but are still picking up a wage. If we're honest we have seen quite a bit of that over the last two seasons and it's not good use of the budget. Better quality players and don't bring in players with a history of being injured.

Tough Job for Jim.

There is an inner steel in him.. Lets now see it.

Have to get this recruitment right... 100% agree no room for sentiment or passengers.

Have to agree that Jim needs to put sentiment aside and look in the cold hard light of day about what we will need to stay in L2 and perhaps even thrive.
For all the talk of L2 being similar to the National League, I would expect this squad to be very much bottom half if kept as is. We have a very good spine and the belief and togetherness they have gained can be used as the foundations on which to build.

In contract players I would be looking to offload Bilongo, Francis, Humbles and Rodney.
Rodney for me just didn't contribute enough. I would say Hendo made more meaningful contributions coming off the bench than Rodney made starting. He had the chance to thrive when dropping down to NL but it would be hard to argue that he has. I wouldn't be confident he would be the player we need in a tougher league. For me, whether he is kept will be a good indicator of how ruthless Jim is going to be.

Expired contracts - the key will be KG staying. One of our best players this season and absolutely has the ability to play at a higher level.
Hendo could retire and go out on a high and no-one would blame him. But I still think he has something to offer, and feel like he can do that for one more season and sentimentally would be great to see him break the appearance record too.
I have been a big fan of Allarakhia - thought he was able to take a player on and make something happen when all too often players instead just wanted to pass the ball backwards, which too often ended up going from attack to the keeper. BUT - he's not been starting for a long time now and you suspect Jim doesn't fancy him. Would be sad to see him go but think it's inevitable.
Pritchard too many injuries but maybe worth a gamble. Would have no problem if Barlow stayed either. The rest we should be saying thanks and goodbye to.

My Thoughts ...

Gordon Yes but if he decides to move on then so do we.
Tutonda
Allarakhia
Gomez-Mancini
Pritchard
Barlow Yes.. Can easily step up to League 2.
Burger
Myles
McBride
Hosannah
Duku
Smith
Edwards
Henderson Yes - If Hendo wants it he will always deliver for RAFC.

Only 3...

The rest have been brilliant but evolution required.

To get better we need to improve in our weaker areas which in my opinion have been wing back and number 10. I would be looking at signing starters in all four of those positions.

Rodney has not had the same impact as he did towards the end of last season and maybe more suited to an impact role off the bench. The other number 10 role has been a revolving door with Barlow getting most of the game time. I want pace, I want an option on the break a Heyes style player which we currently lack.

The left wing back has been a problem position. I want a left footer who is direct and can impact both attacking wise and defensively. Is Bilongo that player? Tobi is a character and great for the squad but as we saw at Wembley he can be exposed defensively. Should he be transitioned to a bench/depth role.

It is really difficult because a lot of these players have given their heart and soul for the club, but there is no room for sentiment and Jim has to be ruthless. Would we have got promoted with Mitchell leading the line instead of Mani?

Outside of top 7 or so teams the NL is dross, we will absolutely need to improve in all areas. We will need to be more clinical and add goals to the team, we have been too reliant on Mani this season. I would be very surprised if Rodney leaves though, for me, he hasn't contributed anywhere near enough since we got relegated.

The goalkeeping situation is a concern, assuming Ollie doesn't return, not just for the quality we will be losing but for his style of play.

There's a lot to do but we have good foundations, I'm confident that we will be ok.

I was interested to see a survey of some Oldham fans on social media asking what they thought the main difference was between the NL and L2 where the answer was that the latter was more physical.
They obviously hadn’t seen the likes of Wealdstone and Scunthorpe.
If that is the case then the Dale squad may need more bigger, stronger players instead of the likes of Barlow, McBride and Berger.
Be interesting to see if this is the recruiting direction taken.

I wouldn't be surprised to see only two players offered new contracts, Gordon and Hendo, maybe Barlow. Pritchard had injury problems at Oldham and they've continued throughout this season. How many games has he started? The rest are fringe players and in the case of Berger he hasn't even been in the matchday squads since Scunthorpe away. We need better quality in EFL2 and any wages saved will help with the budget. We need players who are good enough to force themselves into the starting eleven and stay there, i don't think there are many of those on the list of players who are out of contract. The budget will have to be a competitive one but the owners will know that.
[Post edited 13 May 20:28]

I agree that not many should be offered contracts. Gordon would be fantastic but not expected. Hendo as a player coach may be a an option. My only wild card would be Burger, just think he is gamble that might just pay off long term.
Smith?
The others can go with our thanks and get decent contracts at other clubs thanks to their association with ourselves.
Whatmuff and Perry will deservedly go onto better things.
My thought is we need four/ five guaranteed starters, all of which should have decent level EFL experience. As a marker when you look at Dev and Manni’s efl records you can’t say they are starters.
Upgrades are required so I wouldn’t countenance, other than Abdulmalik, signings from NL clubs that finished below us.
Football is ruthless and we will need that edge going forward.

Jay Bird looks to have returned to training at Salford. Would expect us to be interested in him again, though his injury record could be a concern.

A lot could also depend which division Salford are in next season but Bird would kill two of himself by being cover for Diesrurvwe and an option as a no.10.

The good thing in our favour is at 18 years of age he has no need to rush his career. He would be guaranteed games with us in league 2 and developing in an environment he clearly enjoys. And its local to his parent club. If he has a say in anything and I'm sure he has, and he wants to stay with us a further year it is very possible.

Whatmuff back on loan would be huge for Dale.. He loves it here, knows what is expected and agreed 100% , his age could work in our favour.

One more season at Dale might just suit City, Oliver and the Dale..

There is photo floating around the internet of Calum Perry and Oli Whatmuff on holiday somewhere from a day ago from Calum Perry's instagram where he tags Oli Whatmuff with the caption "another year?"

It almost certainly means nothing.

I think JK Gordon (Colchester loan) is on holiday with the squad - pretty sure he is in one of the photos. I know he was in the squad at the end of the season but slightly surprised he's on the promotion holiday having only played a handful of minutes and being a loan player. I know Whatmuff and Perry are the same but they played far bigger roles in the season.

Suggest to me we maybe will look to sign him permanently? Or he might just have really enjoyed his short time at Dale and fancied some time in the sun!

He's plenty of EFL experience and we never really got to see much of what he's capable of.

Every member of that squad should go and celebrate, you can't differentiate on minutes played. We hardly saw Duku but he scored a vital goal up at Gateshead. As for JK Gordon he didn't really impress me, struggled to beat a man. Smith is another conundrum, he's scored some important goals but looks to be blowing out of his backside after twenty minutes and looks fragile. He's a impact sub who can do the last half hour but we already have one of those in Hendo if he does another year. I think we definitely need to get more pace in the team and also more height and physicality. EEL has been standout this season but he's coming to the end of his career and his lack of pace will expose him next season i think, so that area of the pitch needs strengthening. Cianne Hayes would be a great signing and worth paying a small fee for i think, add another proven goalscorer to the squad and that would see the forward line ok i think. We can't afford to waste our budget on players who have a history of being injured, we need everybody fit and up to speed and contributing.

My thoughts on those out of contract..

Gordon - yes
Tutonda - no
Allarakhia - no
Gomez-Mancini - no
Pritchard - yes
Barlow - no
Burger - yes
Myles - no
McBride - maybe??
Hosannah - no
Duku - no
Smith - no
Edwards - yes
Henderson - yes

Anyone that's a no I don't believe has EFL quality and I think the NL is their level. Taz is a shame as he works hard and is obviously very popular, but he hasn't kicked on in my eyes and struggled to really contribute past some tricky wing play.

My only uncertainty is McBride. We've seen some good games from him and I wonder if the team/play adapts next year whether we might see the best out of him. There's probably better on the market though.

Feels a bit ruthless given the circumstances but this is a huge step up and realisitcally below top 5 in NL is dross. We need to be ambitious (within budget) with a team that's reflective of the level.

I expect our playing style to adapt next year to better suit L2 with players who have more to offer.

Would also love Whatmuff/Perry back - but think they're both destined for bigger things. The positive in our favour is that they're parent clubs are now both PL sides and we've been promoted.

I think Perry would be great in the left wing back role, with Beckwith inside him at centre half. He has great technique and a good engine. We can hope, but probably unlikely.

I agree with McBride. I rate him and he seems to be the type of number 10 we are all crying out for - more direct, drives with the ball etc. That said, Jim clearly doesn't rate him or he'd have been in the team more this season...

Interesting to note that he isn't in Marbella with the others, which could be something or nothing. Neither is Gomez-Mancini, who probably doesn't know anyone having barely trained, but then neither is Francis who will almost definitely be here next season.

Do we think, we could potentially lure Moulden back? His career has seriously stagnated, he’ll be picking up a decent wage but surely he should look to be playing? On who stays and goes. Hendo can have whatever he wants in my eyes. Barlow is definitely league 2 ready, Gordon is a must, maybe keeping his brother till January would help too, Pritchard is interesting cos Hannat is a similar player it all depends on what he’ll want, I’m sure Accy or Barrow will be sniffing around him too. The rest can go and get 3 or 4 of real league quality and a couple of youngsters . A big young cb for EEL to mentor. The key for us will be pace, we currently have none, and we’ll be destroyed. Watching the youth cup final last night probably out of our range but Heskey has some real pace and Samba impressed me too.
But Jim’s overall recruitment has been outstanding it’s his mid season pick ups that haven’t been as good but there not allowed in EFL so it will need carefully planning

This is the One, I've waited for

McBride isn't good enough at L2 level, he couldn't command a place in the starting eleven in the National League and he was very poor in front of goal. It seems harsh speaking about individual players like this but it's the sort of conversation that i hope the manager is having. I rate Pritchard but can we get him on the pitch enough? I like Barlow a lot but i'm not even sure he is good enough for the step up. We'll have to trust McNulty's judgement now, he'll want the best available squad possible because its also a step up for him and his managerial career. Another thing, none of us know what his budget will be. My guess is it will be a midtable one.
