Jenkins. It looked to be a serious knee injury. He was playing well in the number 10 role with him picking up some pockets of space. Beckwith also went off near the end feeling his hamstring.

A bit of a shambles that tonight, very few positives. The passing from back to front .was terrible

I get that the defense will be different than what started but we looked so open on the counter attack. The new wide player looked good.

We have to get the right back four in place for this to work. Like Saturday so many players are pushing forward and the gaps in behind are obvious, this is exacerbated by only having one midfielder sitting in.

Jenkins injury was obviously the low point of the night, it didn’t look good. He’d been playing well up until then. Midfield seems to only have two places available, with one of those being a holding player, Jenkins was playing more of a second forward as Rodney did on Saturday. Whether that changes now and we get three in midfield is yet to be determined but it needs trying.

Is it good entertainment? Without doubt. Will it get results? There needs to be more defensive solidity to answer that.

On a positive note Silcott-Duberry looks an excellent signing. A proper winger who gets in regular crosses. Strong too. Hannant was playing well until the sending off too, a ban would be a real blow.

Also, what happened with Beckwith late on? Left on 90 mins so didn’t see. We’re certainly having no luck with injuries already.

If the two midfielders hold a bit more and the 10 plays a bit deeper it will give us a bit more solidity and we can then use the wide players more. Bilongo at centre back will offer more pace on the cover.

I am wondering if we could play Pettit and East/Francis in the middle and Gilmour in to 10 role?

Beckwith went off feeling his hamstring. Hope it is not a reoccurance, although it did not look as serious as his previous injury.

Thought Moss looked the best of our centre halves. There are similarities with how Postecoglu would attack that sees full backs go into midfield, which in turn pushes a midfielder forward.

Great when it’s working but a misplaced pass can cause real issues.

Edit: agree about trying three of the “regular” midfielders in there. And still don’t think we should rule out a back three, but doesn’t look like it’ll be an option.

Moss is a good one on one defender. As you say it is those misplaced passes from the back into midfield that is cutting us. On a positive note we look to have three wide players who will graft and can have a go.

Feel for both injured players tonight for different reasons.

Jenkins

Had a very good first half, assist for Hendo. Stretchered off is never good and hope is that this was a case of being ultra careful for the lad and not too long a lay off.

Beckwith

From pre-season it is obvious that the new manager sees Sam Beckwith as a LB and intends to play him there this season.

2 CH’s signed and Tutonga/Moss both played at CH. Sam never played their once throughout the whole pre-season.

Sam Beckwith is a fine young footballer but he is not (yet) a fine left back. He did do a job there in extra time at Wembley, his only other time there against Southend playoff semi-final.

He appeared frustrated tonight for me before his injury, and obviously when that happened too.

The LB position concerns me above anything else right now, lets see what Sat brings.

Beckwith played CH at FCUM two weeks ago. But it does seem like he’s going to be used at LB, though he has played there for Maidenhead apparently.

Unfortunately, his best position doesn’t exist in this formation.

What as happened to Maquire and Wilson? I cannot understand the formation and using Edwards as a fullback is worrying. I am worried at the goals we are conceding and sadly, I am also seriously worried that we could struggle this season, in that most EFL teams will rip us apart based on the performances, team selection and tactics so far. Yes pre-season is about getting fit and organised, but it is also about building confidence.

We need to win at Tranmere for the prize money and for the opportunity to go to Bradford for another payday, it also builds confidence and sends a message to other league 2 teams, some fans may see it as another friendly. That we have two games against potential relegation fodder in Newport and Crawley, and we cannot accord to play like we have in pre-season.

I honestly don’t know much about the recruitment of other sides. Are Newport and Crawley going to be that bad or is it just going off last season?

One more thing, that away kit in its entirety is awful. It’s insipid and just doesn’t work as a full strip with white shorts and socks.

This might just be a wrong observation from me but quite a few of the players seemed to be struggling with fitness. Waller looked a bit weighty and ponderous, EEL looks to have bulked up again in comparison to how he was last season and quite a few struggled to keep up with the pace. Halifax looked a yard quicker and fitter. Our passing was slovenly, Moss in particular was really poor but he wasn't the only one. Edwards and Francis, poor decision making but not helped by being played completely out of position. The new winger and Jenkins were the only positives for me.

How many injured players do we now have, it's already getting ridiculous? The young lads from Chelsea and Brighton are probably both injured, Maguire, Jenkins, Beckwith. Toby also seemed to be limping and where was Bilongo? I have a feeling that Beckwiths injury could be worse than we think, he looked distraught in the back of the dugout when he was withdrawn.

I think the whole evening was a bit of a disaster really, serious injuries, red card, terrible defending, poor decision making and a home defeat just a few days before our first competitive game. The players looked devoid of ideas the longer the game progressed and we created next to nothing in the second half. Sorry for the negativity in what was a friendly but that was a million miles away from where we need to be. It was like a game of basketball and at no time did we have any control of the game. The long kick from Waller to the forward was so predictable and over used. I'm sure Watson can't be happy with what he watched, second best all night.

On a positive note, the Ratcliffe looks great and the food and service was excellent.

We'll be lucky if there's 5000 at Bradford, if we get there, and at reduced prices, the 'payday' will be minimal.

The last time they played at home in round one was against Hull four years ago and the crowd was 5394.

I got a bad feeling about this season. Again sorry for the negativity. I just feel a bad vìbe. I can't take any positives from what I have seen so far. I don't feel a team cohesiveness. I feel it should be better than this by now.

Seen the two home friendlies.
First half v Farnham we looked excellent. Since then, the team has looked dire. Slow compared to lower league opposition and disorganised. The number of misplaced passes has been woeful. A few excellent individual performances, but as a team, forget it.

Yes, "only a friendly" , "he needs time" etc etc but two very good attendances for friendly games have been properly disappointed with what our team has not done. Way too early to call of course, but it looks clueless so far. At least the bars will have made a few bob.

Roll on an incisive and dominant battering of Tranmere on Saturday, and best wishes to Becks and Jenkins for good news.

"And only as far as Casey Pettit......"

Watson said the team will have to run a lot, he mentioned Klopp style football included also, rock and roll. That higher intensity looks like it's something our players are struggling with, the amount of injuries and miss placed passes would also suggest that. I'm sure we will see improvement but they all have to buy into what Watson wants. It looks like it's a shock to the system and maybe the hangover from Jim's departure is still lingering but they are professional footballers and changes in management is pretty normal from season to season. We can't afford for players to start feeling sorry for themselves and i detected a bit of that last night on the pitch and also frustration on the touchline. It has to be said, we do have some players who are very languid in style and the opposite of high energy and high intensity, experienced players at that who have other qualities. We'll probably see improvement in performances as the season progresses, you would expect that..

I know a lot of fans, who were worried after last night's debacle, which was dire and we looked chaotic and disorganised, and who said, we looked a potential relegation team. What is worrying, we have a squad that is capable, especially in midfield, but is disorganised and that is down to the manager.

I still think we need additional strikers and a keohane type player, who can sit in midfield or in defence, but crucially we need to play players in their normal positions with a degree of structure and organisation.

One thing we do not know is what the current training load is. If we are still in 'fitness building mode' the players may still be a bit more fatigued going into games than they will be during the season which is reflected in their energy levels. I am not sure we have seen a Gegenpress style approach yet.

The injuries are a worry.

You can only comment on what you watched but it still needs to be put into context, it was a friendly. Frances and Edwards playing as fullback highlighted that. You would expect to see improvement and a pattern of play emerging by now though, players understanding and executing the plan. Last night was the opposite of that. We don't know what Watson wanted though, did he want to purposely stress players by playing them out of position? If that's the case then it was mission accompolished. He was brought into the club because he played a similar style to McNulty but seemingly at a higher tempo and intensity, those in the boardroom wanted to stick with that identity. McNulty's style was a bit too structured, rigid and slow for me, last night was helter skelter. A balance between both needs to be found and is a back four defence now going to be the normal?

Waller slowly strolling up the pitch with the ball at his feet whilst the opposition regroups and pick up their men to mark .... what's all that about?

We did see it under McNulty to be fair. It gets us up the pitch and will occasionally result in the odd opportunity, maybe it's designed for our follow up players to fall on the second ball and create from there. Floating it up to Henderson to tussle with their big centre half isn't smart football though. A lot more questions than answers after that game but Tranmere will be a better reflection of where we are up to.

Ugh! You just reminded me, that used to be EEL's job - standing on the half-way line with his foot on the ball.
I didn't know what I hated most: that or tippy-tappy.
Having said that, once Jim had us winning I learned to accept it.
I know patience is a virtue but, somehow, I would have thought that, with the number of players we have from last season, we would have hit the ground running.

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.
