I am sorry for calling you 'the worst manager in the history of our club'.

Thank you for this unbelievable season! Thank you for taking us back to The EFL.

Thank you for the most amazing season ever, it will never happen in our lifetimes again.

Finally, thank you for uniting the town!

I’d even stick him ahead of Buckley now.

At least you had the balls to come out and actually quantify and stand by your opinion, rather than trying to be all clever - 'suggestive' and 'undecided' - fair play for that.

And, fair play for coming back and holding your hands up, as you now feel that way and walking it back.

Comprehensively agreed on all 4 points ;)

Up the Dale!!!

Yes well done. Listen McNulty may not get it right some of the time and we've all had doubts after Spennymoor, Southend, Brackley and yes sometimes the football can be hard to watch when we slow it down too much and overplay - even on Sunday I was tearing my hair out at times when we had opportunities to play or even throw the ball into the box but we chose to go backwards. What you cannot doubt about Jim is he loves the club through and through. The players love him and the culture he has built up amongst this group of players and the total togetherness they have got us that win at Wembley. They don't know when they are beaten and that is a huge quality to have. Hilly just has the edge for me for the 2 separate promotions with 2 totally different squads and his first 3 seasons in League 1 where we witnessed some brilliant players and performances. Jim has time to try and surpass him though if he sticks around for a few more years.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10

Nobody can mess up more than me. At 2-0 down, many beers deep because it was 1am in my Timezone, I threw every toy out of the pram. After everything I had been through as a dale fan I had a proper fit and went to bed with 10 mins to go. I called out the team as bottlers and stormed to bed. I woke up two hours later needing a drink of water and looked at my phone. It is something I am never ever going to live down. I hate myself for not believing and it’s the worst moment ever in an amazing season and my dale supporting life. Emotions and tiredness took over me and I sadly will not be able to post in that group again without embarrassment.

Seeing the dale fans and family in that crowd has been the most humbling thjng I have ever seen.

Bloody hell mate, I was McNulty's biggest cheerleader from his 1st ever interview, and even I was going under mentally at 2 - 0 down, started to doubt it was gonna happen: same old Rochdale coming back to bite us - it's just never us is it?! It's human nature.

Don't beat yourself up, buddy. I reckon we've got many more days like Sunday ahead of us - we have broken away from those shackles of 'failed' history, a new animal - a lean, mean, never giving up machine.

Take it on the chin with your mates and if they rib you too much then it might be a 'click' chat rather than a 'friends' group.

Up the Dale and down the pivo!

Good post Peaky, I suspect that hundreds of Dale Fans where in that same boat sailing down that same Swanee River without the preverbal paddle !
I've spoken with a mate who turned off the TV at 2 down, another mate was watching at the Pub and he and many others left , I should add that both are Dale Fans but neither are actual "attending matches supporters" I've heard stories of Dale Fans leaving the stadium and spending the rest of the game in the bar obviously regretting their decision, I was at the game with my son we both felt that there was no way back at 2 down again, I suspect that the vast majority of Dale "Fans" at Wembley in their heart of hearts felt the same !
Well done for sharing your "many beers deep" thoughts and experience.

Most fans thought we were dead and buried at 2 nil down..thankfully the people who really matter didn’t..the players.

Fans and players alike hopefully will never have to go through a season like that again..so many highs and some dreadful lows..you couldn’t make it up.

I never wanted Jim as manager, when ho took over as interim manager I thought he looked like a rabbit caught in some headlights in his first interviews.

Thankfully a clear out of players with a bad attitude or just plain inability was done and the dressing room mentality changed.

We won’t always snatch a win here and there at the death but at least we know it won’t be lack of effort by the playing staff on or off the pitch.

As fans there will always be times when we despair but that’s the same for footy fans all over the world I’m sure

Personally I’m still overjoyed

When we went 2-0 down I headed to the concourse to drown my sorrows but everything had closed, coming out after the game saw someone I know. He had walked out & tried to get back in at 2-1 and was told no re-admittance.. he even tried to buy another ticket on line but couldn’t…

Fair play to the OP.

I remember reading that remark months ago and thinking it was an outrageous attempt at double bluffing the FG.

I actually chuckled to myself.

So, to now read you were being serious when you posted that remark, raises serious concerns to your actual ability to process reality. One can only assume you must be cursed.

Fair play though to you.

After Southend and Spennymoor last season, and some uninspiring football despite finishing 4th, I wasn't keen on Jim staying as manager. The board showed faith in him, new backroom staff arrived, and then you think, maybe he'll start to learn from mistakes now. Something he appeared unable to do. He did.
106 points, a season of drama we'll never see again and promotion prove the board were right and us doubters were wrong.
Winning all those games late on. Down to substitutions, something Jim used to be poor at. Our bench has been awesome and I'd wager far better than any other in this division. Hendo for one has changed so many games.
Just look at Wembley. Comeback goal - Smith (sub). Assist for the equaliser, Pettit (sub). First two penalties scored by subs.
If you give a manager grief when it's going wrong, you have to give praise when it goes right and Jim deserves shedloads for his achievements. Cap doffed to Jim McNulty.

Good post. As fans you can only call it as you see it and that's invariably from game to game, each individual game is disected on football forums and discussed, that's the whole point of them. McNulty has improved season on season and done something not even Keith Hill could do, win at Wembley and pick up a trophy in the process. He now starts a new chapter though, managing at a higher level, against better quality managers and better opponenents. Sentiment and emotion will need to be left at the door in respect of the retained list because the squad now needs boosting with better quality players and he will need to utilise every penny of the budget available to him wisely. A week of celebration is perfect but then reality sets in, we have to get ourselves ready for EFL2 both on and off the pitch and there's a lot needs doing.

If we're being honest we've got through the last couple of months on guts and determination in a lot of games, also last gasp goals. We did the same at Wembley in a game that BW outplayed us in for long periods. That's in the National League and it's a indication that there is a fair bit of strengthening required over the Summer to give ourselves the best chance in EFL2. We all have an attachment to these players now but the bigger picture is what's best for the club and i'd like Jim to put sentiment and loyalty to one side and focus on bringing in more quality. All managers live or die on results and McNulty will want to push on in his managerial career, that all boils down to the quality of his recruiting and i hope he's ruthless when it comes to that or he himself will suffer in the long run. It's all about results when it comes to managerial longevity. We're now operating in a different ball park to the National League and anybody expecting a record number of wins, clean sheets, 100 goals etc needs to readjust their expectations. I'd take mid table mediocrity now in respect of next season but hopfully we'll have ambition to aim for the play offs every season and take it from there.

Well said. I'd differ slightly in that the doubts expressed by many fans were based not upon a "game to game" reaction, but an impression which took hold over many games, up to and including the Southend and Spennymoor outcomes.

As i've said, those doubts have now been put to bed, but there are those who appear to claim they knew JM would ultimately succeed in gaining promotion, right from the start of his tenure. Such claims are laughable of course. We came together as a fanbase almost like never before at Wembley, the celebrations are unforgettable, but you're right to point out the need to improve further against stronger opposition.

I think we'll do better than mid-table mediocrity but not expecting back-to-back promotions. I certainly won't be feeling the need to "apologise" to anyone should we do precisely that. These "mea culpas" are as useless as the "told-you-so" element.

Nobody knew that McNulty would take us back to the EFL. There were some though who had full faith in him doing so and they were ultimately proved to be right. I wasn't one of those but i'm glad he proved me wrong because look at us now. The person who showed the most faith in Jim was Simon Gauge who appointed him. A massive decision that proved crucial in us regaining our league status. I love the way BW play football and also Forest Green, McNulty's approach to the game resulted in us winning all five games against them this season. As i said, it's all about results. We all have different opinions when it comes to managers, players, styles of play, decisions made etc. My affinity has always been geared towards those.we pay money to see, the main characters, the players themselves. Even with Keith Hill i had a love/ hate relationship with him at times which probably says more about me than him. None of us are perfect and none of us are correct about everything all of the time. Footballl is all about opinions, not agreement.

At times it all gets a bit daft and personal on here, respect for others opinions, even if they are the polar opposite of yours, should always be adhered to. Shutting down debate because you don't like the narrative ruins the forum. The easiest way to never be wrong is to refrain from offering a opinion or comment on the game, players, manager, club etc. and then wade through historic posts trying to prove people wrong, points scoring. We could look back at the Robbie Stockdale threads when he was appointed and during David Bottomley's tenure if it's all about points scoring but it isn't. There's too much of that going on and it's very childish behaviour. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I would imagine most on here are now also on watsapp groups when it comes to discussing the Dale, football forums at most clubs seem to be receiving less and less traffic, that might be a good thing and would end personal fall outs.

Much of that rings true. Once again though, it absolutely wasn't "wrong" to have doubts by the end of last season. They were evidence-based, not personal and entirely justified

If anyone had claimed "JM will never get us promoted", they - and ONLY they - would've been wrong

Nor is this remotely "clever", simply a correct use of the term

The players themselves, and management, would of course also have had doubts at 75 minutes too - that's only human

What happened is they *overcame* them, not that they would've been *wrong* to have them

The difference matters, and i don't want to have to re-iterate this point again

It’s fair to say that most had doubts at the end of last season. This thread reflects that:

It’s that some argued for him deserving more time to reach a point where they had confirmation of whether he could achieve promotion or not.

And, with that Southend game in mind where his subs did indeed cost us, both Maynard and Garrard did similar. York got away with it, Boreham Wood didn’t. Fine margins.

There were also those who said he needed help and expected to see improvement with the recruitment of Taylor and Done. The big question mark was in respect to the crunch games, could he get us over the line? That was impossible to answer with any certainty until the defining games actually arrived, nobody knew for sure. There were also those who highlighted managerial decisions, one in particular that was ridiculous and also those that don't always enjoy the style of football. Everybody is entitled to their opinion and it's not a dereliction of duty to criticise the manager or players if it's justified. Mcnulty has had a lot of praise and rightly so throughout the season. He's also had instances of criticism but i haven't seen anything that was unjustified. Decisions made in respect of individual games wont always be right but if we're judging managers or players we cant just ignore them He's had his managerial apprenticeship now and done a great job. My hope is that he now recruits well and does it with one eye on his own career, challenge the owners to back him because that will benefit not only the club but also himself. He deserves that.
