because the rich are always well behaved whereas us plebs would clearly have caused lots of trouble. Either you believe in alcohol consumption or you don't, not this pathetic halfway measure Yet another reason why the World Cup should never have gone there

A stadium booze ban for the majority will simply lead to fans - who're no doubt seeing themselves in holiday mode with plenty of sun and sand to encourage those thoughts - getting tanked up in the hours before kick off. Some will go too far, and lose control of their awareness of that particular environment. I can see only trouble ahead

To be fair if pints are half the price of a share in RAFC I cant see many getting tanked. Hope thats the case anyway.

That should reduce the chances of crowd disturbance and drunken debauchery with the obligatory tables and chairs being hurled around.

I nearly ordered a beer in Doha Airport the other week as I didn't have enough time to go into a lounge as I usually do. They wanted the equivalent of £15 for a big beer. I reclined and waited until it was free again on the plane.

But as long as those who awarded it to Qatar have had their pockets lined, who cares? It'll be known as a ghost World Cup, the one nobody can remember, like Japan and USA.

| Qatar World Cup 2022 on 09:31 - Nov 19 with 3050 views | NorthernDale | This world cup will be a disaster, it was obvious from day one, that they purchased the World Cup and that issues such how to deal with rowdy football fans in a sensible controlled manner to the heat. The fall out from fans being arrested for various offences, the police response and this will be a concern for female fans, who do not comply with the dress code for females in Qatar or fans in a same sex relationship, will be massive from most of the European nations. My lack of interest in the World Cup is soaring, normally I would looking forward to it, but not this time. | | | |

Do you know - I think the complete opposite. Agree that the competition should never have gone there given the size of the country, but I think they will do a good job. The crowds will be well behaved and we won't see the behaviour we saw at Wembley at the Euro's. They will be tolerant of the differences in cultures (albeit between gritted teeth) and most people will be a lot safer than they would be at a major European game. Doha is a good city, the airport is brilliant and world class, their airline is the best in the world. For all the negativity, they are slowly embracing western cultures and values. But we didn't object to Russia and I suspect China if they were awarded it despite their clear difference in culture and values. I think if people go to enjoy the football and just behave everything will be fine. Not sure why it is so hard. Of course the hotel prices are horrendous - but fans can hop from other neighbouring countries on the day of a game.

I get this point, but I also don't think we should have to be tolerant of a culture that isn't tolerant of others. Plenty of people objected to Russia hosting the tournament too. If you think back to when they were both named as hosts on the same day, Russia taking the 2018 WC was certainly seen as more of a story at that time. I'm sure there won't be the same kind of scenes we saw on the Euros Final day here which is a positive - but that's at the expense of so much IMO, not least the thousands of migrant workers who have died building these stadiums. The tournament should never be being played there, everything about it is wrong and makes me angry, but I'm going to do my best to enjoy it through gritted teeth because I love football, I love the World Cup and I don't want the greedy tw*ts at FIFA to take that love away from me.

With England bidding for the 2018 World Cup along with Russia that was the story that was always going to make the headlines here that day, at least Russia had a history of being a football country unlike Qatar. Mexico86 was the reason why I got into football and Russia 2018 was the reason why my son finally started getting into football so hopefully once the tournament begins the football will be allowed to do the talking. England's form this calendar year hasn't helped with the hyping up of the tournament here either.

But change happens over time and by embracing nations that need to change the world progresses. In my lifetime we imprisoned gays for being gay. We have used migrant workers in the past 100 years to build the UK - and if we are honest it is only in the past 30-40 years that Health and Safety has been important. When I look at the middle east I think it is important that we have good relationships. 89% of the Dubai population is made up of migrant workers who are literally treated like slaves. Thousands have died there building a mega city and tourist facilities. But nobody has stopped that. Being gay in Dubai is illegal and can carry the death sentence. Yet rich footballers have bought homes in the new paradise, millions flock there for winter holidays. The UAE has the same cultures and values as Qatar but football as a sport has embraced them. Who owns Man City? And don't get me started on Newcastle United and the Saudia ownership. But Britain has always had strong relationships with middle eastern countries as we understand the value of those relationships to maintain world peace. We have taken the rough with the smooth and over time they have embraced many of the positive elements of western culture. Doha wants to be the next Dubai and welcome growth in tourism. It will change

Some fair points there. As others have said, for Qatar read also China & Russia as repressive regimes. Not entirely sure holding World Cups / Olympics Games in those countries has resulted in greater detente with the rest of the world but in general, i'm more in favour of positive engagement with such regimes than giving them a cold shoulder which would do nothing to aid change I think the biggest problem i have with this tournament is that it's one thing to encourage contact with the rest of the world, and another for the rest of the world to bend over backwards (as it were) to accommodate them by holding the tournament in November/December. Others might argue that it's an accident of geography that their climate isn't suitable for international football during those months whilst being impossible during the traditional WC summer months, and that shouldn't exclude them from being hosts. My point would be it puts football (sport in general) directly into the political sphere by making it subservient to that specific issue

OK , it will change, you say, but that is when they should be considered for hosting international tournaments. Remember South Africa, they were not given hosting rights for RWC, international cricket and FIFA world cup prior to changes.
| Qatar World Cup 2022 on 09:32 - Nov 21 with 2013 views | BucketBstard | I wont be watching any of it. I have lost all respect for England players and that god awful manager. The virtual signalling ( that apparently is still going to continue) , sickens me when they are playing in stadiums and driving on roads and staying in hotels that have cost a horrendous amount in human deaths. 6500 slave labourers died to put this charade on. That is way too many. Some not paid , having passports taken off them. Forced to work 12 hour shifts in unbearable heat. Living in cramped squalid containers. If any Football player had any real guts and conviction to stop , slavery, racism , mysoginy, religious intolerance , homophobia and general freedom of speech then surely a resounding NO THANK YOU , we refuse to participate in this World cup paid for by bribes and built on blood. I think any player refusing to go would of caused a real problem for the Woke Society in Britain. Since How dare they not play for their country? Put up against ..Yes but he is making a real stand against the disgusting regime in Qatar. . That would be a hell of a quandary for them! I'm not sure but in the 70's didnt some teams or players refuse to play in the national stadium of Chile , because of the deaths that occured in the military Junta. It may of been my youthful wishful thinking. I wont be watching a single minute of it, and if England do win , to me that would be the end of International football , since who wants to be tarnished with winning this years tournament . As I said I have lost all respect for every member of that team and the manager. Same with any pundits swanning around over there. Gary Neville prime example, along with Jug Ears and David Beckham ( OMG ) I know he's numb as a p!ss stone but surely he can see the bad things out there far out weigh the games . Sorry long rant . I'm just focusing on the Dale and hoping that January gives us a chance to freshen up the awful squad that Nice Guy Robbie has dumped on Bentley. The Dale going down would be devasting for me ...I no longer care about the priviledged England players. | | | |
