Refwatch - Woking v Rochdale on 23:09 - Apr 1 by 442Dale | Isn’t overpassing at the back and boring football McNultyball? Or is it going deep and being unable to hold onto leads when a goal up away from home? If it’s the latter, Steve Parkin made a Dale career out of it. Except we won quite a few doing it. There’s no defending the manager here, it’s simply asking for consistency in the criticism. We’ve moved from home displays being the issue, to away ones. Isn’t that indicative of a particular issue as a season develops rather than any particular philosophy? Otherwise we’d be trying to hold onto one goal leads at home too. Something else Parkin was good at. |
We're not consistent at home though, we've put in some terrible performances and thrown games away with some ridiculous attempts at game management. Our home record might be better but the bar wasn't very high. We're consistently inconsistent and it's killing us. [Post edited 1 Apr 23:38]

Nor am I saying we’re consistent at home. More that it was the big issue with how we played and/or results. At home we have the fourth best record in the division and about half the games have been a good watch. That may or may not be good enough for some. Personally I think it’s alright and could be better. I’m appreciative that we are Rochdale, able to compare it to recent and historical years and where we currently are in the football pyramid.

Well you're setting your sights too low i think and you can't use past exploits as a excuse to accept mediocre. We're playing in a very poor league and we have a squad of players that are better than half of the home displays being a good watch. It's got to be much better than that at home. What's happened in the past is now irrelevant, we're expecting to get out of this league within three years, hopefully this year while we still have a chance. We need winning mentalities throughout the club, including the fans base, it the only way we will get back into the EFL. Making comparisons to previous failures to justify why we should accept mediocrity and be grateful will hold the club back. The manager should be preaching this anyway, not me. He won't do though. My sights aren’t set anywhere. I turn up to games hoping to see a good performance and wins. Sometimes that happens, sometimes it doesn’t. This season it’s been a lot more than usual. I still hope it can improve further and said so. At the same time I expect the manager to make effective use of the resources at his disposal, get results and produce an entertaining side. He’s fallen a bit short for me this season but I can also recognise progression and acknowledge that 6th in the table and a cup semi is a decent campaign, so maybe I’m being a bit unfair with the criticisms of squad construction and an over reliance on one formation. If it’s a very poor league, York fans must be absolutely furious to be heading for the play offs with the quality in their squad. Confirmation that TAR, Burger and Adu Poku all unavailable through injury/illness tonight. [Post edited 2 Apr 0:00]

I very roughly tallied up those points from games that fall into the "points dropped" category....I got to about 13/14. Net, including games we sneaked a point / win undeservedly, I think the figure is about 10 points dropped. I'm struggling to remember many games of the latter category - when we play poorly, we usually get hammered. Halifax at home I think was one example. There's probably a load of bias in my reading but I'd be interested to hear others' views. Appreciate the old adage 'you end up where you deserve to be' - and I believe this still is true - the fact is we've proven a bit soft in some games we should have won or at least taken a point - something we may need to rectify to get out of this league. I still think the point at Woking is a solid result - honestly I'd have taken it before KO. I didn't watch the game and it's understandably disappointing to concede late on in that fashion. Edit: All that said, I've just started to watch the gaffer's post match interview and wish I hadn't bothered - I've got to 3 minutes in and we've got injuries, the pitch, referee, fatigue as excuses so far. Anyone else stomach the whole thing? [Post edited 2 Apr 0:50]

Yes, surprised he can motivate himself, never mind the players. We need a leader of men both on and off the pitch, excuse after excuse for McNulty, injuries and fatigue, poor pitches are normal at this time of the season. He's fortunate that the Ogden family have afforded him a squad of players which other teams in this league dont have the luxury of. Spennymoor fall into that category and their players have also been playing catch up while working another job. Let's see how many of these injuries and illness miraculously clear up by the time the team is announced at 2pm on Saturday. I'm predicting Barlow, Hogan, Beckwith, Burger, Henderson or Bird will all start. According to McNulty, Barlow and Hogan are injured but he still took them to Woking and named them on the subs bench, not sure why he decided to do that when he wasnt going to play them. Wouldn't rest and recovery have benefitted them more? Failing to strengthen the midfield and forward line has come back to bite us and he's been given the resources to do that since last summer. The manager was glowing in his interview, he's pleased with the point after describing the pitch as a cow patch. He said it was a very good performance. That's worrying. [Post edited 2 Apr 7:31]

Refwatch - Woking v Rochdale on 07:06 - Apr 2 with 2147 views | Rodingdale | Scrolling through our results this season, the pattern is inconsistency. Irrespective of quality of pitch, fixture congestion, injuries. We’ve had enforced breaks too due to our own pitch. Look back to last season, it’s what you get with Jim McNulty, inconsistency. Inconsistency of results that is. He is consistent in his post match interviews though, comes across like a politician, trying to explain why nothing was his fault. Failure to acquire a striker capable of leading the line, failure to see we need a strong holding midfielder, failure to know who his best side is. Needs to be put right, but first needs acceptance that mistakes have been made and responsibility taken. We’ve gained six points from the last 18 available. Sure we’ve moved up the table, but that’s as much to with Altrincham and Gateshead form dropping off badly. Still all in the melting pot this season, he may get away with it. Hope he does, and we win the Trophy and do well in the playoffs - anything else will be a missed opportunity. I wonder if Jim did swing the players by the Wembley arch on the way back from Woking. Bet the thought never entered his head. [Post edited 2 Apr 7:29]

So 22 points from a possible 51 available since the turn of the year..good enough to see you avoid relegation but probably a bottom half finish. It seems that some fans think that's acceptable and the buck doesnt stop with the manager. We are slowly but surely blowing our play off chances, there'll be a excuse for it though, there always is. "I wonder if Jim did swing the players by the Wembley arch on the way back from Woking. Bet the thought never entered his head." It's unlikely he did and just headed home, which is surprising as he loves going the wrong way on a football pitch. It's pointless having a fantastic defensive record if you're doing next to nothing at the other end of the pitch (barring a few games). Another game in our hands and we've thrown the win away by worrying more about not losing than going for more goals. It's incredibly draining.

It's not going to change though, it will be the same next season. McNulty stated in his post match interview that it was a 'very good performance'..hes trying to pull the wool over our eyes. That's obviously the levels that the players have been set, if they repeat that performance then the manager will be happy. I wonder how the Ogden family and those in the Boardroom feel about that having watched the game? If we had won the game the analysis would have been a decent first half but we yet again sat back in the second half and invited pressure, and we managed to get away with it due to a missed penalty and them hitting the post near the end. It would never have been perceived as a very good performance would it? Looking at McNultys body language in that interview he doesn't hurt like us does he? The result doesn't seem to bother him, is he even desperate to reach the play offs? I have my doubts about that if I'm being honest. Anyway, let's see what Saturday brings. [Post edited 2 Apr 9:01]

Woking Fan here - I come in peace I thought I'd add some thoughts after last night's game, from hopefully a reasonably balanced perspective. Rochdale is one of those clubs in my eyes who are not a Tier 5 club, but who should be in higher leagues, well established, history , good fan base etc however you find yourselves in the NL, and TBH I think you are destined to stay down here so long as you keep your current manager in place. I've supported Woking at this level and below for the last 20 odd years, and this is a bastard hard league make no bones about it.. and sadly I sense Mr McNulty has been infected by the Pep mind virus, and you are not going to win the league by playing football on your own 6 yard line. The reality is that most of the players at this level are simply not good enough, that's why they are in the 5th tier. I also make a point of watching the opposition manager's post match interview, and an interesting watch indeed. The chat on Moaner's corner ( the small terrace next to the dugout ) at half time was this was going to be a long night and a difficult watch, however the chatter at the end was one of complacency from Rochdale and that we almost nicked it. So in my book McNulty should have owned that defeat fair and square, you should have killed that game off, and his tactics did not make that happen, and once the words about the state of the pitch come out of a manager's mouth you know they are on the defensive ( btw - do you think we want a pitch like it is at the moment? and in case he forgot we weren't playing a different surface !! ), the other tell is the one about injuries, we have been absolutely ravaged but Ardley doesn't lead with that.. He needs to find some balls and a spine, cos if he doesn't have it your team won't have it.. I'm am sure your players have the desire and aggression that is needed at this level, but it has to come from the top.. it's no surprise the 2 best teams I've seen this year - Barnet & FGR have managers who are absolutely snarly gob shites, who appear to have a resting state of barely contained anger..and btw neither of those clubs are league clubs given their pathetic fan bases.. I would really like to see Rochdale back where they belong, but I sense you may be down here for a long stay unless hard decisions are made.. PS - also not a fan of manager's telling players to go down when they get in the box, which he did last night..

What will get McNulty the sack is if he starts blaming fans for negativity. He started to go there after the York debacle, if we continue with the same inconsistency next season it will be a third season of his post match excuses. People aren’t stupid, opposition fans see it for what it is and the Woking fan nails it with what’s required to get out of this league. Criticism and pressure will build quickly next season, I suspect the fans will start to show more of their disappointment at style of play and inconsistent performances and results. The board won’t be able to afford crowds to dwindle. But, a win at Wembley just might buy him some more time. We might sell more season tickets on the back of Wembley glory, the reality of a 0-0 Tuesday in December versus say Tamworth - a new cohort of fans might be a bit harder to please. Over to you Jim.

Irrespective of what happens on Saturday or in our pursuit of a play off place i don't think McNulty will be going anywhere. There's nobody in the Boardroom going to make that call unless it's a collective one. He's probably a very likeable fella and a good coach but i don't see management qualities in him unfortunately. He should take responsibility for how we perform on the pitch and the end results, this fella has a excuse for everything...even a excuse for why we can't beat clubs competing in the same league. He watches a different game to us also and views mediocre as very good. The players will love that but it's never going to increase attendances. [Post edited 2 Apr 10:23]

23 games , half the season where we have scored 1 goal or 0...(11 X 0, 12 X 1) 23 more goals would have seen us nearly 30 points better off. This team makes plenty of chances but simply does not convert enough of them. We have only lost 4 games by 2 goals or more....we have averaged 1 goal a game conceded all season, although that has increased to 1.3 over the last 8 games thanks to getting battered twice at home.

We needed to sign another striker before a ball was kicked this season, it was glaringly obvious. A 40 year old Henderson and very injury prone Rodney should have told McNulty that. He chose not to address the problem and he did the same with the midfield. East and Gilmour have been flogged to death with very little option to rotate them. Henry on loan was injured early doors and was never replaced. None of that is down to bad luck, not when he's signed plenty of players and overloaded the squad with wide players. Those are the type of questions that Gregg should be asking him in his interviews, it would be interesting to hear the managers response. It's poor management and recruitment and that's not down to the Ogdens and the budget. [Post edited 2 Apr 12:08]

"...who appear to have a resting state of barely contained anger..." One of the best phrases i've read on here! Thanks for your post. That point you gained could be vital in staying up; our manager is generous like that!

From Forest Green down every team will have had similar results. The further down you go the longer the list get. Close results are what gets the blood pumping. Jim was wrong to say the pitch was a cow field, cows would have starved to death. It did look like it had been heavily grazed by horses and had the poorest covering, not bare patches, I have seem for years. Poor from the ground staff. But no excuses should be used on that score, they both had to play on it. Off the highlights only thought that was decent last night. Which Rodney turns up for a game is anyone’s guess, last night it was the decent one. There were definitely soon tired minds towards the end because there were some really bad decisions being made in the last few minutes. That team was missing numerous starters and none of us would have picked it before. On balance it was a decent point, even given the circumstances of the equaliser. Not coming up on Saturday cos I ain’t seem them win when I have attended this season. That in my mind might help the result. UTD

In terms of "tired minds", it's basic psychology that being energised to push forwards leads to more adrenalin flowing (i.e. the right amount) and losing that impetus results in tiredness You can be as knackered, physically and mentally, as you want after the final whistle - and then focus on recovery with a smile on your face Instead, the players will have left the pitch with things going on in their heads that won't have aided recovery Over the course of the season, these things add up and the person who can do most to turn that around instead concentrates on negatives These, too, are the reasons i'm not a fan of Jim McNulty

Refwatch - Woking v Rochdale on 09:21 - Apr 2 by JWCard | Woking Fan here - I come in peace I thought I'd add some thoughts after last night's game, from hopefully a reasonably balanced perspective. Thanks for posting. Always nice to hear opinions from outside. I completely agree about the Pep virus, and I suspect that’s why our fanbase isn’t growing despite (points-wise, at least) this being our most successful season in over a decade. Pep wins games and trophies because he and his teams are winning machines, but nobody can tell me his style of football is exciting. It’s dull, and I still maintain his hold over English football is one of the worst things to happen to our game in ages. The people of non-league Rochdale don’t want 100 passes before every shot, they want fast, exciting football. That’s what’ll bring the crowds in.
