| Refwatch - Altrincham v Rochdale on 18:35 - Dec 20 by Yorkshire_Dale | ollie Pearce has just netted a 1st half hatrick for York v Truro....the advantage gained in our GD last night, over York, has gone. Our biggest threat this season. Southend loosing 1-0 at Tamworth HT |
Finished 4-0. 59 goals in 22 games is crazy. We can only control ourselves but I think it’ll take York to have a bad patch in the second half of the season for anyone to finish above them.

Given our respective points-per-game, it'll take us having a bad patch for anyone to finish above us

We are still a point ahead with 2 games in hand. Yes they've beat us twice which isn't great but we still look really good. I was really expecting a struggle last night with the players missing and new players bedding in - I bet other teams were looking at it thinking we could slip up but we were great - up there with Carlisle away for chances created. York have an interesting start to the new year Borehamwood a, Southend h and Carlisle a in Jan. We will definitely know more by then.

Agree to some extent but if we win our games in hand we will have a 7 point head start over them at pretty much the half way point. Whilst I reckon they’re the best team in the league, a repeat of our first half of the season would pretty much require them to win pretty much every game in the second half of their season. I also think having them last day of the season works in our favour as it rules out any earlier 6 pointer which would really shift momentum. Whilst not discounting them completely from the title race, I think Carlisle and FGR in particular could end up taking points off both us and York. As with all title races, suppose a certain part of this will come down to luck.

It’s that York are getting better and better, especially with how many goals they’re scoring. PPG since Maynard took over is only slightly lower than ours, 2.33 v 2.49. Once he got his formation bedded in - he switched to a back three, evolved to using forward players at wing back on occasion and brought Stones in from the cold - they’ve been relentless. Expectation has been raised by our start and I believe we’ve shown a strong mentality as seen in the responses to defeats. Just think it’s going to need York to also experience some defeats/draws to maintain the gap though, because their form over the last two months is remarkably even better than ours.

I suppose 1 plus point in our favour is over that time is our main goal threat hasn't really been scoring and we've still been able to keep up our momentum. Hopefully when Mani returns in the New Year he'll be refreshed and firing on all cylinders again.

Yep, your last point is the one I’m hoping for. There will be a requirement for results to go our way on occasions. 100 points has been mentioned, there’s a thread somewhere where some were hoping we could be half way there by Boxing Day which would have been our 23rd game. We could still be at that level with two games more to play. It’s that if we drew at Morecambe to reach 50 and then lost the next two, getting halfway to the 100 points after exactly half the season would now be seen as a bit disappointing. This season is like no other so far with the amount of sides at over two points a game, that we are where we are is remarkable and at the same time way more than any Dale fan would have hoped for at this stage. Agreed. We’re a totally different side to York. Once which I think is more capable of getting a result when it matters. The wins by the odd goal and how we’ve beaten rivals has shown that. Diesruvwe will be vital in those games. York are scoring lots on a very consistent basis. The remark about them having a bad patch would be based on how they react in the games where they aren’t likely to score four.

After last night, there's the distinct possibility that we'll just get better too I certainly hope that's how the mindset is working behind the scenes. The competition for places is now just about as intense as i've seen at Dale, so managing the squad is a huge factor which, on the evidence of last night, is what we're doing. Having the two experienced pros alongside him is vital since it's not something that the manager can do alone; different players may respond to different voices, providing the messaging is consistent

The squad that we’ve built over time is undoubtedly a real plus. We’ve also seen that choosing our strongest team is difficult because of all the other factors, including those we aren’t always aware of like when players need a rest to avoid longer term issues. There will be times when they make choices to change the starting XI and it doesn’t work, that’s happened over the season and might again. But you’re right, that decision making others can contribute to has worked much more than the odd occasion when they’ve got it wrong. Looking at the last ten games, we gained 22 points. That’s great form. It would see us on 91 points after 40 games should we replicate it. I’m sure most would take that if offered now. If York replicate their last ten games over the next twenty, they’ll have played 42 and have 100 points. But we will have two games in hand! That’s why I believe they need to have a ‘bad’ patch or two. One where they draw and lose in a 3/4 game period.

I also have a feeling that we are going to get stronger as the season progresses, if we do that then even York will struggle to stop us. The competition amongst the squad to claim a first team shirt has now kicked in and what was perceived by many as our strongest starting eleven is now up for debate, the injury situation could prove to be a positive in the long run as unsung heroes now step forward from the squad. The pitch situation and playing at Accrington will also galvanise the players, it's another obstacle but that focuses the mind and the pitch will be ideal for our style of football. There is also a real possibility that York could lose their leading goalsorer during the January transfer window and EFL clubs are allegedly already sniffing around Linney and CCC at Carlisle.. So it's feasable that some of our rivals could be weakened by the end of next month. I suspect that all the top four or five clubs will probably share the points around when they play each other. The deciding factor will probably be which team harvests the most points against those clubs outside the play off places. We are doing great and even if York did finish top of the pile i would fancy us this time to win the Play offs. It feels like it could be our year i think, adversity is present in respect of the pitch and injuries but the players mental resolve and determination hasn't wavered, we saw that at Altrincham last night. That’s a great observation about the injury situation being turned into a positive. Squad players have indeed stepped up and new arrivals have done well immediately - Broome and Waller last night being a good example. Not sure Pearce would leave York after recently signing a new deal but it’d be interesting to see how they cope if he got injured.

I feel strangely relaxed about how this season is going to pan out. We're nailed on for a play off spot so that's a credible achievement in itself. In comparison to last season we have a stronger coaching team and a superior squad of players. We know we can beat Carlisle, FGR, BW because we've already done that. So we would enter the Play Offs far stronger than last season. I also think sometimes it's written in the stars and a promotion season when our pitch imploded and we had to play elsewhere would be the perfect ending to a unbelievable story.

If a high end L1 club comes knocking would the player want to turn down the opportunity in preference to playing in the non league? The Club would be left with a disgruntled player.

Indeed, there might be said Clubs in L1 eyeing up some of our players as we speak...our progress will not have gone unnoticed. I was speaking to a Leeds fan only an hour ago who mentioned our great result last night, I did n't prompt him...... ......we're been watched!

Or be part of something that has never happened to our club in over 100 years of existence. To win a league championship. Then by all means leave in the summer or stay on our adventure.

When you're top of the league your players are always being watched, so is your manager. You would hope everybody buys into the end goal but when opportunity and money presents itself in football we know what happens. We are only half way through the three year plan to return to the EFL and three years is a lifetime at a football club when it comes to the longevity of players and managers. As a non league club we are vulnerable when it comes to clubs higher up the chain cherry picking our assets, that's normal when you're going well. The three year plan couldn't really be going any better on the pitch but if i was to be critical i think we need to be more ruthless in front of goal. Everybody is wary of York because of their goalscoring prowess and they have players who can win games on their own. forwards who run at the opposition and bully them. We don't have that at the moment. If there is a plan to strengthen the forward line i hope it's to improve on what we already have and not to just add to the numbers. That should be the first question now, is this player going to make us even better? If we aren't constantly improving we are going backwards. There will be decent EFL strikers warming the bench or out of favour with something to prove, i'd rather see us bring somebody like that in than a young kid with no pedigree at this level who we hope to improve...we don't have the time for that. I'm sure we'll be keeping tabs on Jay Bird when he returns from injury - maybe another loan is possible if he isn't playing regularly again.

Jay Bird seems to miss more games than he plays, a bit fragile. We have the same scenario with Devante Rodney, both very good players but a injury or illness or a reason to protect them is always around the corner. Somebody who is robust and we can keep on the pitch would be good. [Post edited 21 Dec 9:38]

A huge factor in this is the gaffer: it's clear the players will run through a brick wall for him and are totally on board with the project - it will have a magnetic effect on them staying here and "finishing what we started". It was evident the last time we had a bright star manager who gets Rochdale - the players we were able to sign and their subsequent performance levels, were above our means - based on the manager's 'pull'. The difference now is we are not a selling club; or if we are to sell a player, we are financially able, for the 1st time in my known history of the club, able to dictate/hold out for the real value of the player. I'm even relaxed about the possibility of the gaffer leaving - the way he carries himself, his openness, honesty and how he speaks about the club; it's gonna take a really special offer/club to turn his head before we have reached our ceiling.

I'm more sceptical than you when it comes to footballers and managers. If a Barnsley comes knocking we've seen what happens. It's all part of the game and not worth worrying about.

As somebody on here pointed out to me last year, his priority will be his family and his career and that should be respected. He shouldn't be criticised for speaking to other clubs. I think Burton were sniffing around at the time. He's a improving young manager and if he carries on as he is then it stands to reason other clubs will be sniffing around. I'm assuming the Ogdens and those at the club will be fully aware of that because in football it's normal. He's got something special going on with these players, hopefully they can all achieve and celebrate together at the end of this seaaon.
