I’m sure he’d be happy with being rated as slightly better than Alan Buckley.

We don't have to agree that the way we played out from the back was entertaining to watch though, neither was the performance at Solihull on Wednesday. Players walking around with the ball and standing with their foot on the ball on the halfway line is anti football to my mind and i'm not bothered what McNulty says to be honest. I'm not the only one, there was discontent every time Hogan was on the ball. I don't believe that's the only way we can pick up points neither, we scored after three minutes and should have overwhelmed them but we didn't. I haven't seen any other team employ this tactic of theoretically using the central defender as the play maker and dictating play from the halfway line and i dont believe that the manager is some sort of footballing guru who is educating the fans on what's good to watch. Let's see if we play like that against the better teams if it's so instrumental in us keeping clean sheets.

The discussion the other day about how football is played now covered why we are seeing this type of games there are across all leagues now.

We play a form of it that is effective and, at times, entertaining. There were some cracking moves yesterday, and not just the goals. The Gilmour effort and one Henderson couldn’t get on the end of just before half time were excellent pieces of play too.

To get to those areas it requires patience at times, the lead up to both goals illustrate that when the opportunity is right, we exploit it. The opposition won’t always allow us to play as quickly as we want, so trying to drag them away from their set-up leads to slower play. Then we do find that gap (Gordon into Henderson, Hogan into Gilmour) we are into areas that lead to goals.

I appreciate the frustration when we slow everything down and sometimes the wrong choices are made. I totally understand why we do it though. Especially now results are backing it up. The last half hour added the Dieseruvwe string to our bow and we went into him as well.

09/10 was our best chance to win a title.

We were well clear before that awful run at the end of the season.

The chants of "14 points and you fked it up" are still quite haunting.

I get that but Hogan was walking with the ball and there was no pressure on him at all, players in front of him and at the side and still standing with the ball..the crowd are shouting ' pass the chuffing ball'..Allarakhia is free and waving his arms. Hogan can do a job but he's not a Roberto Maldini, we're better than that surely when it comes to creating goal scoring chances. Anyway we won but i don't need McNulty to tell me how to appreciate a football match. It was good at times yesterday but some of it wasn't enjoyable to watch, Hogan farting around with the ball. I appreciate some might enjoy it though.

Looking at the highlights, I’d say it’s working. But yes, there are times he could have passed it quicker.

That’s true of any player in any team, sometimes they’ll make the wrong choices. Being fair to Hogan, he’s hardly played so it must be a bit more difficult to come in and be immediately on top form and used to others around him. Being involved in both goals will hopefully give him the confidence when he steps in again.

You're being harsh on the game at Solihull. Conditions dictated the game that night - believe me, it was wild and windy at times - and the number of times passes were overhit and/or caught on the wind and wet surface was significantly more than we are used to seeing.

It needed a patient performance, especially as the home side did everything to stifle us, which was odd considering how many goals they have been scoring lately.
[Post edited 25 Jan 14:52]

It was one of the worst games i've ever seen. I know the conditions were bad and that contributed to it. Bizarre tactics from the Solihull manager, he neutralised his own teams threats.

At this point, i don't care how we get over the winning line, as long as we do

Returning to the EFL is essential to our longer term plans. This could represent our best opportunity

I frankly don't care about McNulty's career either. If he gets the job done, it'll be a huge credit to him. The key word is IF

Big game on Tuesday. Playing for three points (again) to take us back to the top of the league, with two games in hand. Different scenario to 09/10, where we led from the Bradford away fixture then folded. I still don't fancy our chances in the playoffs, so let's make sure that isn't what we have to do

We had 14 shots.

How do you know what Southend will or won't do? None of us have a clue. Look at Solihull last Wednesday; they had scored 7, 5 and 3 in recent games, yet showed no attacking intent whatsoever.

Well I predict they will close us down quicky and not allow our quarter back anywhere near as much time on the ball..

This will lead to extra pressure and mid placed passes that might cost us..

First half yesterday we scored 2 great goals .. missed a penalty and hit the woodwork twice… I have no idea why I still feel we shortchanged ourselves. I guess it’s because all that action was inside 30 minutes so that left 15 minutes of football that was ponderous and boring.

The Mani D cameo was encouraging BUT all his good hold up play was with his back to goal a long way from any threat.

We sit second, 80% win rate is incredible… we are going to enter now a potentially title winning 5 week period. The side that finishes top on March 01st I think will go on to win the coverted auto promotion 1st place.

No I’ve no idea either because in that first half our good build up play led to eight efforts on goal:

Smith goal.
Henderson header.
Gilmour shot wide.
Barlow shot that hit the post.
Smith effort over the bar.
To win the penalty Henderson missed.
Henderson goal.
Gilmour shot against the bar.

Those were spread across the entire half. From the goal within three minutes to the shot that hit the bar a minute before half time.

Debatable...

There've been those who've been so one-sided they could genuinely be called a half of a half-back

Then there was Steve Doyle, who was the full eighth

It's becoming a question of pressure... who has the desire and who hasn't. This is where we find out who has the cajones and who does not, when the going gets tough and all that.
So far the plan has worked brilliantly, and I guess the plans of the teams around us have worked for them too, but now it's getting to the nail-biting bit, and this is where we make History or do a "Dale" and leave everyone frustrated, per the previous 119 years... our expectations are perhaps lower than they should be, but, we can only do our best from the stands and hope that the assembled group on the pitch knows what is required and is prepared to carry the weight of history like a feather.

The weight of history is heavy on our clubs shoulders. 119 years of nothing (and please TVOS don't say the Lancashire Cup). Even recent history of glorious home failures against Spennymoor and Southend haunt a lot of this current squad. I mean York aren't much better with 1 league title (Division 4 1983/84) - although they have won the play offs 3 times and the FA Trophy twice. I just hope when the time comes that enormous weight of pressure isn't too much for everyone to overcome. There has to be a first time for everything...hasn't there?

The "separate argument" you mention being the inability to convert chances, backed up by the very poor goal contribution from midfield in the last 2 seasons.

I find it disappointing that voices are appearing that say we will not match York when we are only halfway through the season. We cannot match their goalscoring or probably their goal difference, but we have every chance of matching their points. We may never get another chance like this.

In 70 years of supporting the Dale, we have never won anything- a title. This is the best chance I have experienced.

We are one striker short of a good squad. How many of the younger squad members will be with us next season I wonder?

UTD

On your last point, we've been short of a reliable striker/ forward all season and going into the crunch part of the season we are still short. Smith wont be back for some time and struggles to stay fit even when he returns. Mancini has been a waste of a squad place, contributed nothing. Rodney is brittle and his fitness is constantly managed. Henderson is now 41 yrs old and Mani is just returning from injury. Duku, who knows why he wasn't in the squad on Saturday, hopefully he's not already injured. So there's a possibility we could now have three forwards injured again.
