| Refwatch - Scunthorpe United v Rochdale on 23:36 - Mar 25 by Sandyman | Pertinent to this, remember Rochdale 0 Barnet 4 last season. It was commented on here that from the Main Stand, their manager was berating his team for not doing more even though they were battering us. They went on to deservedly win the league. Jim isn't like that, and we are deservedly top of the league to date. Perhaps Delboy's suggestion that more is demanded (and worked upon in training) is vital to secure all that has been achieved in the previous 40 games, rather than wasting those achievements being timid and sitting back? |
But for the injuries and relentless schedule, it's not possible to go twice a week, balls deep, fully committed every game But, not being more ruthless when we go in front, going into survival mode, seems to be our achilles heal for important games. Great though defensively, we do manage to weather the storm. But were missing out on glory, by allowing the opposition to come forward while we go all hedgehog. [Post edited 26 Mar 1:32]

Comments about losing crunch games when it matters are echoed on the other side of the pennines. 95 points, top of the league, one defeat in 18. Whilst it's little comfort, if we dont win it it'll be because York are even more exceptional than us.

| Refwatch - Scunthorpe United v Rochdale on 08:26 - Mar 26 with 3489 views | beat_the_bishop | Too much talk about York on the last game. Lots of football between now and then. But, at the same time. We show them far too much respect. The same York that has recently been well beaten by Boreham Wood and Gateshead. So I won’t be convinced we aren’t capable of beating them. The only factor in that will be how we turn up and more over, if it is for example that we only needed a point the likely hood is we will set up to play for a point. That’s the worry because we all know that if defending for 100 minutes is our game plan then it will be an awful watch. I predict a loss to Hartlepool and two draws between now and then. It could well be a nothing game by that point. Just hoping the pressure on York sees similar results for them over coming weeks. Has anybody got any idea when Gilmore and TAR are back in the fold? Also what would we do if EBL gets injured. Gordon at CB? Hoping Beckwith is close too, feel like he may well be close and come out as a surprise. [Post edited 26 Mar 8:28]

| Refwatch - Scunthorpe United v Rochdale on 08:43 - Mar 26 with 3389 views | wozzrafc | To be fair we have been ahead of york all season. Since the turn of the year we have played just one more game (18 to there 17) and we have both scored 43 points. But take into account our schedule has been condensed into a short timeline and In those18 games we have played 7 games againt top 7 teams Carlisle Borenwood Forest green Southend x 2 Scunthorpe x 2 Dale W13 D4 L1 York Borenham wood Carlisle Forrest green Scunthorpe Southend York w14 d1 L2 We are going head to head with a great team, both teams have dropped points in recent weeks. But we are equal to them. This at a time when we have seven first team players out and its taking its toll Gilmour Rowling Prichard Whatmuff Arahkia Beckwith Tutunda And then bilingo. Individual mistakes in a few games have cost us, We have not been seeing out games the way we where a few months ago. but im not going to start berating players who are playing in increasingly more pressured games. 95 points from 40 games doesn't warrant it. One final point: When you look at the times we have had the chance to pull away, its been an away game which is by no means easy Halifax a Southend a Scunny a In that respect york have been lucky. Why cant they slip up just before we have the likes of Eastleigh at home. We have six games to go. Both us and york are dropping points. Bottom line id rather be in our position. UTD. | Refwatch - Scunthorpe United v Rochdale on 09:44 - Mar 26 with 3175 views | DareToCalvin | It is a shame in the circumstances that we couldn’t hold on, and we all know that we historically aren’t allowed to enjoy any successes and how we always make it difficult for ourselves. However, despite all this, I do believe last night is a decent result. We have gone to a very tough place to go, with 8 players unavailable; half of them regular starters. We changed our tactics because of the really poor conditions, to play in a way that we aren’t used to and doesn’t suit us. Both teams had a goal handed to them from a goalkeeping error, and the other goals were both good strikes out of nothing. Yes, the corner that resulted in the 2nd should’ve been avoided but we still had a corner to defend. Beforehand, I would have absolutely taken a York loss and a Dale draw this week. Except the final day, that was on paper our most difficult game remaining. This group are exceptional and relative to the level we’re at, the best team we’ve ever had. Whoever goes up deserves it and if I had to choose; I do believe it will be us. Back them; nerves are inevitable at this time of year but we have still only lost 1 game in 2026. We can do it. | Refwatch - Scunthorpe United v Rochdale on 10:21 - Mar 26 with 3097 views | Nerazzurri | If we take one more point than York in the next 5 games the last day is irrelevant, sounds easy eh. Either way I'm getting a bit tired of this inferiority complex I keep seeing, even a lot of our fans thinking York coming here to win is a foregone conclusion. They are a different style of team to us, doesn't make them better & so far we have won more games & picked up more points. To be where we are after losing our main striker for 2 months, various international call ups, long term injuries to key players & playing a game at a neutral venue is quite remarkable. York don't seem to have faced anywhere near as much adversity so far. | |

| Refwatch - Scunthorpe United v Rochdale on 22:36 - Mar 25 by NorthernDale | I would normally have been happy with a point at Scunthorpe, but at 2 up, I had hope then I thoughts of Halifax like many other fans. But it is becoming a common theme with the Dale, we get a lead and then sit back and invite teams to attack us and sadly we struggle. I understand the need to rest players, but sometimes I think McNulty does it for the sake of doing it and why does he keep bring on Hosannah, he is a very poor player at this level. I thought McNulty would have got the message after the Halifax debacle. But it is the same old Rochdale, have a chance to create a gap between us and York, but end up buggering it up, we can only hope York make another cock up, but I doubt it. |
No, it’s not the same old Rochdale. When was the last time we were 3 points clear with 6 games left? this is a very good team competing in a relatively poor division. This season has been great to be a Dale fan. Last time I felt like this we were thumping Bournemouth 4-0 away. Not direct at you necessarily Northern but there seems to be a lot of nervous posters on here at this stage. D_Alien is so right now is the time to hold our nerve. That is as a collective, team, management, owners and most importantly the fans. I do believe that anxiety on the terraces spreads to the pitch. The way some on here are talking it’s as if the game against York is in both teams hands on the day we will inevitably loose out. As for me I’d love to be 4 points to the good after the Braintree game (although clinching the title away from home wouldn’t be so good), but really I just think the team and fans deserve a chance at winning this league having lead it for so long. If that requires us beating York on the last day that would be the sweetest of successes. To achieve that everyone needs to hold their bottle. This is our time. UTD

Unfortunately times have changed. I don't think Tony Buck's team having a throw in near the edge of the opposition's box would throw it back to their own keeper.

| Refwatch - Scunthorpe United v Rochdale on 11:36 - Mar 26 with 2889 views | JimmyRustler | My thoughts on reflection: Great goal from Hannant but we were fortunate to be 1-0 up as we were under the cosh until the goal. I am not of the opinion that the keeper is to blame for the first goal. Even with the apparent inference that the keeper has shouted for it, Perry should have took charge and cleared the ball. Their second goal a good finish but pish from our POV. Burger was great when he came on but dicking about with the ball in that situation is suicidal and East didn’t cover himself in glory with the attempted block. I’ve only realised how bad the pitch actually was after watching the highlights back. It’s no wonder we went long to Mani so often. I do think the insistence to defend deep when in front is costing us points. That’s not to say that it hasn’t worked in the past but we are at our best when attacking and I just wish we would have gone for it a bit more when 2-0 up, especially with Scunny having to go for it and the game opening up. I don’t think the majority of fans would have had a problem with us conceding in this manner. Anyway, onwards and upwards. I think both sides will drop points from now until the last game, I just hope that we end up 4 points ahead when it comes to the final game because I’m not sure my nerves will be able to take it otherwise. Edit: I also believe that the goal was correctly ruled out as Barlow looks offside to me when Mani strikes the ball [Post edited 26 Mar 11:39]

Like you and many more, I would love to go into the final game four points in front, I don't want a reply of Southend last season, which was agony. I agree that we need to hold our nerve and stand united, but being 2 up in recent weeks and throwing points away as not helped. As anyone any information on what as happened to Mancini, is injured? Also with so many injured or missing, is it time to recall Humbles from Altrincham.

| Refwatch - Scunthorpe United v Rochdale on 14:06 - Mar 26 with 2476 views | Trev | In a one off game I would absolutely have York as favourites, if that's considered negative by some then so be it. It would be best attack vs best defence, problem is we are now conceding at an alarming rate and York are still scoring goals for fun. I consider York to be the best team in the division by some distance, the fact that we are in with a shout is a testament to how good we have been. So yes, without a shadow of a doubt, I dont want it to go to the last game but it would still be an incredible achievement and one we'd have all taken before the season started. | | | |

I think this complex is based on the two matches against York this season...in the FA Cup they beat us 1-2 in October, but at the time we were doing well in the League and less concerned about the 4th round? But within a month we were well beaten 4-1 at their midden despite having a decent first half. I really think we could "hold our own" better against them now. On dropping points, York play Woking on Saturday......Woking are top of the Form Charts right now....might be interesting?

Hard to be critical when we have 95 points in 40 games including 30 wins as this is just Obscene.... I still maintain though that the football can be divided into two.. Moving forward we look dynamic and full of threat.. exciting edge of seat stuff. The playing around the back 3 and goal keeper is dull as dishwater and as soon as the trend moves on from this the better as far as i am concerned. I know (442) that the whole point is to do the later to get to the former I just really wish there was another way. The team does look like its firing on 5 cylinders not a pumping 6.. just good that the 5 cylinders that we still have are good enough to take this season even further down the road all be it spluttering in parts.

Again if you want to put your money behind the Dale best offer in numerous places is 8/13. Interesting take from the odds compilers (although wouldn’t be surprised if they use bots at this level) as I can’t believe the firms have bigger liabilities about Dale over York. Unless Cameron dipped into his wallet at the start of the season.

Their defeat against Gateshead was no fluke..Gateshead fully deserved their win against "super" York who struggled to make a decent cross at times. Who'd have backed Gateshead of the bottom 4 to beat them convincingly...? Woking in a good run of form

I don’t think there’s ever been a disagreement, on here at least, that many of us would prefer to see a more exciting style of football across the game. It’s the understanding that for that to take place at Dale would require a total overhaul of the club’s approach, including at managerial and playing level. It would take months to implement, even if the majority of personnel were retained. Would supporters be willing to put up with fluctuations in results to get there? Worth remembering that we’ve been building this since summer 2023, there’s been a lot of understandable criticism and some unfair reactions along the way to show how difficult it has been for some fans to accept how progression can be achieved. It’s taken that long to get to a team that wins 30 games out of 40. Even then, we can still adapt and add to what we have. Last night showed this as we didn’t attempt to overplay at the back and were visibly more direct throughout. This led to one goal and we might even have reduced some of the pressure had Diesruvwe had a better game. Avoid the errors by Burger and East in the lead up to their second and I think we’d have been talking about praising the way we can find different ways to win. Unfortunately one goal then changes the narrative to suit a narrative. As always, the page counts always reflect the result. That’s football. Trying to stay balanced is as old school as all out attacking football and playing 4-4-2.

Looking back at the highlights I'm still not sure how Gordon puts the header wide at 1-2. That goes in and its probably game over and we are sat here 5 points ahead.
