| Refwatch - Rochdale v York City on 16:59 - Apr 25 by jfmolyneux | God it’s brutal supporting this team isn’t it. So many what ifs, doesn’t bear thinking about. And yet….I’ve felt worse as a dale fan. I was there in league 1 when we scraped back from 2-0 down against Walsall to go 3-2 up, only to immediately concede a 94th min equaliser in the year we went down. I was there when we went down that year against chesterfield. FC united. Spennymoor. Playoffs last year. Genuinely dismal times under Steve eyre, and under jim Bentley. We nearly didn’t have a club to support not very long ago. We’ve been conditioned for disappointment after disappointment. Football is a cruel sport and we have suffered more than most. Yes, the manner of this is cruel, but we played pretty well, we went toe to toe with a very expensively assembled York team, we have a talented squad who love the club, and I’m so PROUD to be a dale fan. We go again. Up the Dale. |
That's exactly where i'm at After we'd scored, i had a weird sensation that it wouldn't be enough - probably due to so many similar examples over the decades, even if not quite so late on or quite so important

This continued for more than a minute The stewards just allowed him to leave the pitch No doubt cctv will be available to the police, who were conspicuous by their presence except when it actually mattered [Post edited 25 Apr 16:28]

We were playing with 10 men until he was replaced by Hendo Couldn't care less if others think thats OTT, but Mani deserves better support and has done all season - possibly a key difference between us and the champions. Get Henfo onto the pitch much earlier And don't want to hear irrelevance about "we don't play with a front two" when everyone can see the difference once those two (Hendo and Rodney) are swapped. The only other factor is how long Hendo can run for, but surely the playoffs are worth pushing him to the limit As said, that's my only criticism on what i felt was a heartening display yesterday against the best team.in the league [Post edited 26 Apr 9:51]

I'm a big Rodney fan but the DAZN coverage is undeniable - some disciplinary action needed?

Rodney was poor. Again. His main contribution yesterday was to stifle Kitching, but he offered so little going forward. Henderson replaced Hannant on the left of the three though. It was Barlow who played the Rodney role up against Kitching. Well, for two minutes until Maynard responded by bringing on Howe and moving Kitching to left back in a back five.

Again, irrelevant The linkage between Hendo and Mani is a joy to watch, from whichever position, and needs to be maximised now. It's Rodney's place he'd take, which is the only relevant point

To you irrelevant, to others it’s also positional. It’s a good discussion though. If he starts, and maybe he should, it could be that Rodney plays as well. Doubt it though because it’s rare we play with three “striker” forwards. Would expect Barlow right and Henderson left. Pritchard could be an option too. However, although we may not all agree, the impact of Henderson off the bench is getting results so with there may not be many changes.

Already factored in all of that, assuming most would get the main point i was making Looking forward, JM needs to find someone to replace Rodney for next season. Unsure of Rodney's contract details but i repeat, his lack of consistent input one of the key differences between us and York The phrase "on his day" should have no bearing on the selection of a successful football team [Post edited 26 Apr 10:27]

Would be looking to accept any sort of bid we get for him in the summer. That said, if he does turn up in the next two games then would give him a five year deal. Nolan at Morecambe would be the immediate target for the role. But then again, we also need to add real pace. Although, on the flip side both ourselves and York have done as well as we have without really quick forwards (Rodney excluded)

This comes back to a point i made after Xmas, we have a mish mash of forwards with only Mani who we can rely on. We've recruited since then but in my opinion not very wisely, not enough players who have forced their way into the starting eleven. Duku and Mancini have hardly featured. Smith has poached a few goals from the bench but always looks like he's a yard off the pace when i watch him. Rodney has gone backwards this season, it's the hope that kills you with him. My pet hate is seeing managers change something that is working fine to try to plug a deficiency somewhere else and for that reason Henderson needs to be left alone. If you start him and replace him for the most crucial part of the game who do you bring on to provide tge magic against a tiring defence? It's the psychological effect that you would lose also one that has a impact on both teams. The fault has been a long running sore all season, we've been short of another recognised goalscorer who can consistently put a shift in all season and have been relying on the likes of Barlow to chip in with goals. No matter who we play in the play offs they will have at least two dangerous forwards to keep a eye on and we dont have that. They cost money but we've wasted money on players who have hardly been on the pitch. It’s certainly been the one area that hasn’t been properly addressed. The collective efforts of Barlow, McBride, Burger and others who have played the forward roles at times haven't been bad, it’s that they are so interchangeable which is the story in itself. Nobody stands out like Pearce and Banks have in the same positions for York. Looking at the one real positive from that though is the recognition of how good Henderson has become. His age should no longer be a talking point because his contributions are easily good enough to feature at this level or the one above. Another year’s deal with an option for another 12 months after that should his fitness not drop off, which is unlikely.

Completely agree, including the "late magic" part The playoffs aren't normal league games though - as yesterday wasn't Hope we can squeeze another season out of Hendo, for more late magic

We had a great game plan yesterday that worked to perfection, the chaos that ensued after the idiots ran on the pitch and the finsh to the game couldn't have been envisaged. There is something that needs to change next Sunday though and that's our attacking prowess. Somebody might correct me but i can't remember us having a single shot on target through out the entire ninety minutes. Our only chance was Mani's goal in injury time. That's too extreme for a team playing at home. [Post edited 26 Apr 12:00]

Insofar as we can't rely on very late goals, this is very much my point. Our attacking capabilities need to be maximised beyond yesterday, and the obvious solution is to give Hendo and Mani more time on the pitch together Just to add: i think i'm right in saying York hadn't failed to score in any league match up till yesterday, and didn't up till after we'd taken the lead so our defensive setup was bang on: EEL and Perry in particular but everyone throwing bodies in the way of shots. I suspect putting Mani into defence (understandably) after we'd scored unbalanced our formation to the extent it allowed York the room to create the chance they took

He seemed far happier foraging on that side with Barlow/McBride linking up with TAR and Gordon on the right before then. At the moment he’s either dropping deeper and deeper to linkup or hoping to get on the end of a long ball from Gordon eg the first goal at Halifax.

On a similar theme, we've scored in every home league game this season, for the first time ever in a season with 23 home fixtures. We did it in 1926/27, but there were only 21 home games then. [Post edited 26 Apr 20:42]

They failed to score in two games like us, though indeed, can bet that Pearce won’t have had such an ineffectual game as yesterday because of the clever tactical changes made.

1 plus point from yesterday was the effectiveness of Moss when we went long towards that inside left position. Something we must utilise again in the remaining 1 or 2 games. We need to win a lot more 2nd balls though as York seemed to get to most of them yesterday.

Rodney was a passenger the time he was on the pitch, he's a very frustrating player to watch at times, he should be absolutely bullying teams like Stones seems to spend most the game doing...
