TVOS Preview - Rochdale v Scunthorpe United (Playoff Semi-Final) on 16:16 - May 3 by rich_dale

Absolutely. Whitehall left an arm on him in the first half as well.

Not too sure there was anything in that at all, looked like he hardly touched him, was pretty pleased when Whitehall went off as I thought his physicality would have troubled us over 90 mins.

Special mention to Hannant who im surprised hasnt been mentioned yet, he was absolutely class very dominant display and subs helped too, just wish Hendo had put his foot through it when he was put in I think he doubted his pace and ended up losing the ball, to a man fully deserved that

That early goal was just what was needed to ensure there was no mental hangover from last week. Was surprised that having constantly pressed Southend they did adopt a similar approach today. Maybe there wasn’t enough left in the tank. Or they thought we could beat the press.
We didn’t create much in the first half, and the TAR & Gordon axis isn’t quite back up to speed yet.
However when the game started getting stretched in the second half we were much better through the middle and Rodney was able to exploit the space beautifully.
Hope the Coventry promotion doesn’t see Perry discarded by them, he has been exceptional.
So BW it is. Abdulmalik has improved as the season has gone on but so have we. Can’t wait for the Wembley date.
Did the gypsy with the curse have a day off today? or are they just a true believer in the sabbath! Cursed my arse.

I think you need to look back at some of your posts regarding Rodney's usual position

It was a good finish today, and he benefitted from the enforced substitution. That's all there is to it, and there were plenty of regular, knowledgeable fans around me who were making the same point
[Post edited 3 May 18:59]

Yes I know where he’s played. Recently he’s been played on the right. As he did today before the enforced change. He’s also played on the left in the past too.

Having attended all the home games and watching quite a few of the away games I trust myself around tactics.

Like when knowing Francis isn’t right footed and as a central midfielder not suited to play RWB.

I was there at the Orient game full of hope and high sprites, what an eye opener , lost 3-0.

.....and it was quite easy to climb over the various perimiter fences surrounding San Spotty and get in without paying.

Did that a couple of times, got 2 shillings and 6 pence , as we said we were going to catch the bus outside the old post office .and managed to climb over the fence without anyone seeing us and of course pocketed the money.

Hannant was awesome today, shame he didn’t slot his one on one.

I will take full credit for today’s win by telling a random chap to stop singing que sera sera with 2 minutes to go.

Second goal brought a wave of confidence that this team hasn’t shown for a while - a bit of football swagger.

Hope Whitehall injury not serious, looked hammy.
Hope BPM is ok for next week, he had a great game today until he went off.

Thought we deserved the win and the hoof-goal was as we do, nothing is easy!

Rodney has played both the left and the right 'number 10' positions this season, often depending on who is playing in the other role. Whilst there will be natural and tactical variations during games the basic posotioning is the same. He was just more impactful in the second half, capped off by his wonderful finish.

Our basic shape has not changed all season.

I thought he was impactful from the outset - he broke the lines several times and they had to foul him 3 times in the first 20 mins to stop him. I thought second half we went 2 up top, Rodney playing off Mani with East playing as an attacking midfielder - that was a change of formation

Whilst I can see that viewpoint and would love to have it confirmed by the manager, East did seem to make a point of retaining his higher starting position.

It’s incredibly boring but I really can’t wait until we evolve into a midfield and a front two.

I don’t need to. If you want a detailed analysis of how we’ve played tactically in every game this season, happy to do so.

Just glad McNulty has stuck to his principles and philosophy and proven plenty of people wrong, no matter what happens next week and how joyful/joyless it is.

We may have seen an insight to the released list before it’s been announced. As much as I’m pleased to see Beckwith back, that Burger, McBride, Allarakhia don’t make the bench when we also include Baptiste with so many defensive options starting already says a lot.

Not the full list though is it? I would expect to see Tutonda, Hosanna, Duku , Gomez-Mancini and Humbles also packing their bags. I'd offload Smith too but that perhaps depends on Gordon's intentions.

Scunthorpe very physical...borderline dirty.

Moss was hit with a combined headbutt / forearm assault on 43 minutes that should have been a straight red. Whatmuff was clatter Ed late several times and their number 6 should have received a second yellow after tripping Perry in injury time.

Borderline dirty or just plain nasty

Rodney has also played on the left over the season with varying results.

Rodney improved when he wasn't dropping back to cover Moss. When Hannant was switched to the left is when Rodney came into the game.

Most of his work is spent tracking back and covering which is not his best use

Security protocols for me were spot on today, worth mentioning.

I’m sure someone will grumble about not being able to leave TDS rear for a few mins but that is the price we pay for Southendesque type crowd.

There was a realisation moment in the Sandy when we saw the police/stewards INSIDE the perimeter fence that made it obvious that anyone intending to come on couldn’t do so. Nobody is going to hang around in the walkways when there’s security between them and the wall to get on the pitch.

We’d be up now if they’d employed the same tactics last week!

Back to the game, interesting to hear McNulty’s comments on Barlow’s absence. Sounds like he’d have started if he’d been fit. Branching timelines indeed.

That's pretty much the general opinion of those around me, all knowledgeable Dale fans. We were all pleased for Rodney when he was free'd up due to an unplanned substitution and he produced

There really is a talented player there, but he needs to play 15 yards upfield to get the best out of him. A midfield player he is not. But a strong forward playing alongside or just behind Mani D he absolutely is. He terrifies defenders when running at them.

I'm delighted for Rodney, and the whole team that we won today.

I'm also glad that most on here (barring one or two) see that Rodney can be and is a real threat to opposition teams as he showed today.

Full credit to all our players for withstanding one of the dirtiest teams to visit the COA for a few seasons. They were thuggish and should have been reduced in numbers even before half time.

Someone said that Whitehall's challenge on Whatmuff had "nothing in it". I respectfully ask them to look at the DAZN footage where it's 100% clear that he elbowed our keeper deliberately . Pub team tactics.

It was a toss of a coin whether to start Rodney for myself. With McNulty’s interview hinting at Barlow playing it may have been different. But you’re right, it’s the undoubted capabilities that set him aside with the frustrations we don’t see it often enough.

Meanwhile, some straw clutching includes agreeing with opinions that claim he benefitted from not having to cover Moss.

Despite not playing on the same side as Moss when both were on the pitch.
