I’d have major concerns for him if he does go there
Jury was out on the playing style for all of his time here pretty much.
Jim benefited from a patient fan base who understood where our club had been at its lowest and was grateful to just be existing.
There will be far higher expectations and honestly speaking I am not sure he’s cut out for it.
None of which is to say that I’m not hugely grateful for his tireless work ethic and the ultimate promotion, he’s a legend but I think he’d do better to stick with Dale otherwise he could find himself out of a role by January. |
I have mixed feeling about him going there as I hope Jim continues to have success wherever he goes (not if he ever ends up at that pub team in Bury though), however Stockport's owner has bought three of the local non league teams, Stockport Town and Cheadle Town/Cheadle Town Stingers(Cheadle Town women's team) and this summer he has pulled Stockport town from the Northwest counties league which basically folds them and he has immediately disbanded the Cheadle Town Stingers so that Stockport County Women's team can play at their Cheadle Town's ground, which is all feel pretty grubby from a local football perspective. I really hope this all ends up as pure speculation. For Jim to leave now would, surely, arrest the momentum most promoted teams get from going up. After all the hard graft of dragging ourselves out of the NL it seems such a shame to, seemingly, put the brakes on our surge.
Not sure if anyone knows this but, how often do newly promoted teams from the NL go up within a couple of years of promotion? It feels like a lot of them do. |  |

Bristol Rovers promoted from NL in 2015, promoted from L2 in 2016
Lincoln City promoted from NL in 2017, promoted from L2 in 2019
Tranmere back to back promotions from NL in 2018 then from L2 in 2019
Stockport promoted from NL in 2022 then to L1 in 2024
Wrexham back to back promotions from NL then L2 in 2023 & 2024
Bromley promoted to EFL in 2024 then just been promoted to L1
What links all these teams? All were promoted from L2 with the same manager who got them promoted from the NL
Even if they don’t get promoted within a couple of years it’s rare for a manager getting promotion from the NL to immediately leave in the summer. For something comparable I think you have to go back to Ian Evatt who got Barrow promoted from the NL and then immediately left to manage Bolton, who had just got relegated to L2. In that instance you can at least see that Bolton were/are a big club and it’s a position most lower league managers would be pulled towards. I’m not having that for Stockport. They’re a bigger club than us but they’re not a sleeping giant. They’re not an ex Prem club fallen down the leagues like Sunderland or Southampton. I would say that actually being a L1 club pushing for promotion is probably about their level. [Post edited 5 Jun 17:35]

Not really he'll probably be on more money with a bigger budget.
However, I cannot see Stockport County giving him enough time. They'll want promotion straight away. Failure to do so could mean an early exit. At Rochdale Jim was given time to develop the squad after a difficult first part of his tenure. |  |

Good luck to him. Will go down in Dale folklore as the man who led us through the darkest of times and out the other side to provide the most memorable season ever.
As a principled, focused manager, he’s always going to stand or fall based on his own decisions. That bravery will see him in good stead, whatever happens at Stockport. Really hope he gets the time he got here because patience and support have proven to help him help a club succeed. |  |

Good luck Jim, and thanks for a season which will probably still be talked about fondly when a lot of us are also long gone.
Whether it is the right decision will become obvious by Xmas. If he keeps the same brand of football, unless Stockport are right up there challenging for the top place, you can imagine the locals and the owners will show a lot less patience than the Dale fans.
The official Stockport announcement doesn't make any reference to the backroom staff following him, so it seems quite likely we'll at least have some continuity there. The best result imo would be to get a new experienced head coach who is prepared to work with what we have - be that someone with L2 experience or a progressive NL coach like Garrard. We are surely a very attractive proposition for the right manager - lets get him in place, back him, and start looking forward to some exciting front foot football. | | | |

As far as the Dale are concerned its now upto the Ogdens to ensure we get the best leader to take us on to the next chapter of our adventure together. I every confidence they will.

He gave us a season we will never forget ..I’m sure the experience of it has made Jim a much wiser person in footballing terms.
Not sure how County fans feel about this appointment..I’m very surprised Jim was even in the running for it.

That's irrelevant though, the fans wont be involved in recruiting the manager and rightly so. We'll get what we are given. The Ogden family and Directors will get what they wish for, if it doesn't work out it wont be the fault of the fans. It's all about results and winning games, it even shuts up those who aren't on board with the style of football. We have to win games at a higher level now and if the new manager keeps us safe this season and improves the squad, plays some decent football then that will do |  | | |

The club statement says "we have always had succession plans in place should he move on....a number of candidates have been identified and discussions are well under way". This on June 5th. Stockport only announced yesterday too.
On May 18th- just over 2 weeks ago- the retained list was published, which surprised me with its hard line( though necessary). Presumably with full agreement with the Board.
It almost seems as though Jim and the Board had come to an agreement that he wanted to leave but both parties wanted to prepare the ground. Since Challinor was still in situ at Edgeley then, this suggests that he intended to go anyway?. | | | |

I'd suggest more like "open to offers" than "intended to go"
Hence the "haunted by success" look. He knew that promotion was going to lead to him likely abandoning the whole vibe he'd been part of at the club, one of its cheerleaders

McNulty obviously has contacts at Stockport with ex players etc. He could have been sounded out for this job several weeks ago, maybe before the York and BW game at Wembley. Dependent on Stockport losing in the Play Offs again. It sounds as though Challinors time was up and the parting of the ways wasn't a surprise. One hundred and six points over the season is going to grab peoples attention and so is a promotion. It was inevitable Jim would get other clubs sniffing around and has left us while his stock is high. I think it will be a poison chalice for him but he will have weighed up all the different scenarios. If he bombs big time at Stockport in the next nine months what will he do then? He could find himself managing in the National League again, picking up a coaching job, or ideally managing the academy at Rochdale. I think that would be a ideal job for him. | | | |

The squad have proven they’re a resolute bunch, as was their manager. A big fear would be a manager who doesn’t buy into and add to that culture we’ve already got. Having read both the club’s and McNulty’s statements, there’s no danger of that they’ve obviously had a clear plan for any change of manager and they’ll know exactly the people who could fit the club.
It’s not an exact science of course, but we’ve seen in the past how not having that succession planning in place can undo a lot of good work (when Hill left for Barnsley). There will be no guesswork around who they appoint. McNulty has provided a blueprint around the type of person we can expect I think: calm, determined and complete belief in their philosophy. Intelligence and a total focus on winning has got us to where we are. I think we’ll be alright. [Post edited 6 Jun 16:51]
