Definitely some disruption. It will take some time to readjust but focusing totally on the squad for a minute, we needed to see some significant change anyway and new players would have had to fit in. It’s now those new players will be another manager’s signings. Would not be surprised to see us starting to reignite the fires of the Rochdale “produce players to sell on too”. We have to start bringing in money on that side of the club, the assets we have may now be open to a move which benefits all parties.

Actually, it does not make me happy. I am really sorry to see him leave us. He had the potential to be on an upward trajectory career wise under incredible owners who have clearly backed him and continue to invest heavily in the infrastructure of the club and town. This was his first job in management. We may undoubtedly see things differently with his departure. I see the problems his departure will cause. He's chosen to go. For whatever reason. But, pride and happiness.

It's not a unusual event James. A successful manager moving on to what he thinks is a step up the career ladder. It doesn't matter what the fans think. Parkin and Hill did it. The disruption is also part and parcel of running a football club, it's not something that other clubs don't have to deal with. Managers come and go. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the loyalty and opportunities the club has shown to Jim and his family over more than a decade, it's not been a one way street, we've paid his wages for a long time. We've both been good for each other.

| He has gone on 20:27 - Jun 5 by 442Dale | Very true. Hill, Parkin, Bergara, Dolan all did similar. Luckily Dolan took Chris Lee. Would think some of the players may be reassessing their options now too, especially those who know they can also progress their careers with a move up the ladder. Not necessarily to Stockport either. The other thing worth considering is that any staff who do remain after a manager leaves must know there’s a chance of any incoming boss bringing in his own team too. It’s a reset for sure, but better we do it back in the League rather than after playoff final defeat. |
Yes, agree with that. To be honest i don't think we have a player at this moment in time who is EFL1 standard. I see Beckwith as our best defender but he needs to find his feet in league two first and get some games under his belt after his injury. Gordon has improvement in him but at times i'm not convinced with his defending, he gets caught out positionally, it's a massive leap from the National league to EFL1. I thought Perry was the stand out defender for us last season alongside EEL. Most of our retained players will be ok next season i think but they are going to need some extra quality around them. I think Gordon could make the step up, at least as a squad player. Agree about Beckwith, although I wonder if he would get exposed pace wise at the top end of League One. I do not think he will be raiding the squad for players. Loans for Perry and Whatmuff become obvious progression moves for their careers. I can see our new manager undertaking quite a bit of shape shifting and see next season as one of consolidation whilst he builds his own team and way of player. That is unless Taylor/Done continue with what Jim built.

I don’t think it’s that usual actually for a manager to leave immediately after getting promoted from the NL. I can think of only Ian Evett who’s done it in recent years - promoted with Barrow in 2020 then went straight to Bolton. It’s far more common for a manager to stick around and go for promotion again from L2. I certainly wasn’t expecting Jim to go, despite our success last season. I was expecting him to stay and see if he could progress us further in League 2. I saw it as Stage 1 completed, now let’s see how he gets on with Stage 2. For Jim it seems like he has just seen it as job done, move onto the next one. I think people can be entitled to feel a bit disappointed with how this has all gone. We’ve not even had 4 weeks to enjoy the Wembley success before things get thrown all up in the air again. [Post edited 5 Jun 21:03]

Talking of pace, the one thing that distinguishes one league from another is the ability to control the ball, think, and move the ball at pace This was the thing that struck me as far back as 1969, and our first game in the old Third Division (L1) against Orient. Our really good team just didn't have time to think They adjusted, and went on a great run, but speed of thought alongside the ability to execute is everything We have talented players under contract; some will get found out, others will bridge the gap. Playing a system that's resilient against pace is also what distinguishes one manager from another This was made perfectly clear whenever Hendo was on the pitch. His speed of thought allowed him the time to do things which made our forward momentum look distinctly pedestrian most of the time. I think Mani D has it in him to adjust, also Pettit and possibly Beckwith. Really not sure about anyone else, but they can happily prove me wrong [Post edited 5 Jun 21:24]

Speaking of Hendo, I wonder where this development leaves him? I know he intimated at another year but will he still want that under a new manager who may not appreciate his quality and contribution as much as JM?

Gilmore and East will be fine also i think. Petit could thrive next season. EEL and Rodney could possible flit in and out of the team and become squad players, the same for Tobi. All of them are more than capable of doing a job and with the addition of five or six quality players and loans we will do ok. Pace is key as you rightfully point out and thats why i see EEL becoming more of a squad player, at his age he will probably be comfortable with that. There's a lot of hard work ahead for the new manager.

Two years into their ownership, it’s been a fantastic learning curve for them in the world of football. Now, I believe we’re set to take a big step forward. There’s a strong chance we bring in someone better than Jim, to deliver the ambitions for this club. No backward steps. Upwards only.

I concur. Jim stepped in when most wouldn’t. Forever grateful for that and of course getting us back to the EFL is the cherry on top. I am sad to see him leave more out of curiosity than love. Probably not on my own but I was racking my brain wondering how we will go in League Two if we play the same way. And moreover, I wonder if he will improve the overall game or if we have a challenging start to the season have the know how to shape shift and find a way. I will be forever left guessing, but I was silently optimistic he would set us up well. As you have rightly said, we are the best hands. And I like you actually see this as an opportunity. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see our next appointment as one maybe we all didn’t expect. Our owners are both sensible and ambitious. The next chapter is an exciting one, we are no doubt now behind the curve in terms of recruitment etc but whoever comes through the door will be well backed, so let the fun begin. A note to the players too. I am sure those contracted will be gutted. Credit to Jim, he’s signed good guys not just good players. I’ve enjoyed that the most.

No-one should start a post with "is it just me" - even if you think it's just you! But your impression isn't mistaken around the messaging at forums, etc. Lots of people look askance - some fools even make a sad habit of downvoting like a (knee)jerk - anyone who raises a point which goes against the narrative McNulty's letter is fair enough, though. It's how to take your leave gracefully and the same methods of speaking to fans, clapping them etc. probably helped with the squad togetherness which got us over the line at Wembley, through sheer belief after being second best for most of the match Job done for him. As for "loyalty" - it's business, career, income, and an insecure one at that. It is what it is [Post edited 6 Jun 6:18]

I had my reservations whether McNulty's style of football would get enough results next season, so i'm not gutted to see him leave, i'm more surprised that Stockport have appointed him and given him a three year deal to be honest. The turning point for me last season was when Hartlepool beat us at Accrington, they had us gasping for breath literally throughout that first half. They didn't give us a minute on the ball, they outmuscled us and knocked us out of our stride. They sussed us out in other words.I think we can expect a lot of that next season and we have to be faster, stronger and fitter. We were nice and we were passive and Mani D kept getting those late goals. We abused that get out of jail card big time. I'd like to see us fight fire with fire next season and seeing some blood and thunder high tempo football with loads of passion would be great. Get some nasty buggers signed. McNulty did brilliant to get us promoted, he won a lot of games at non league level but his football never got the pulse racing for me, in fact it frustrated me more times than it entertained me. Wembley was the best example of what i'm saying, totally outplayed for most of the game and failure or success was decided with probably the last kick of the ball. Had BW scored four or five goals nobody could have complained. That performance alongside many others had me quietly worried about how we would go on in EFL2. I'm not bothered what others on here think to be honest, we all like different things and i've been watching football long enough to form my own opinions..i call it 'dot to dot walking football' and i feel myself getting frustrated just typing the words. Maybe not Stockport, but it would have been a big surprise had there been no interest from other EFL clubs. After three years at Dale, and still being in the National League, he would still have had a choice to make about his own career. Especially when the noise would have grown amongst the fanbase around his suitability to take us up. It’s obviously preferable he’s left after completing the job of returning the club to the EFL.

I still visit the Barnsley forum from time to time as its always a decent read and there were lots of fans not happy with being linked with him. The walking football and slow side to side passing wouldn't have gone down well.

If you’re winning every week because of a well established structure, fans begin to overlook concerns around style of play. Especially when that structure allows for changes in style to achieve further victories.

| He has gone on 10:42 - Jun 6 with 1743 views | mikehunt | Well, I lean more towards Judd's line of thinking: I don't wish Stockport well. They, after all, have had previous with blagging a good manager and players off us, which set us back. That then, inevitably, translates to Jim doing badly at Stockport. Hard luck. This might sound like sour grapes but it isn't. I am just moving on - as Jim has done. I always rated Jim: even as a player. He gave his all and respected our club and its fans and I will always love him for what he did for our club. I did think he might have liked to, at least, see if he could stay another season and see out his (Imho) remit to try to get us back into L1; but the Sirens beckoned him elsewhere. I am concerned about losing our players. Might some of them feel shafted, having re-signed assuming Jim would still be here? Anyway, let the new adventure begin. This time I don't feel quite as abandoned and rudderless as on previous occassions. Thanks again, Jim, for a fantastic season and for all you did prior to that. They can't take that away from you. | |
