Stockport are having a great pre-season 👍

They have a great squad of players, just missed out on automatic promotion to the Championship last season.

'Rochdale were slack on the ball and slow in their build-up".......quote from Halifax Courier this morning. Did not see the game and it's only a friendly but is this a worry so near to the proper season?

I know a lot of fans, who were worried after last night's debacle, which was dire and we looked chaotic and disorganised, and who said, we looked a potential relegation team. What is worrying, we have a squad that is capable, especially in midfield, but is disorganised and that is down to the manager.

I still think we need additional strikers and a keohane type player, who can sit in midfield or in defence, but crucially we need to play players in their normal positions with a degree of structure and organisation.

While there are some concerning signs from what we've seen so far, how can anyone say we look a potential relegation team without seeing the "first XI" in action in League 2?

Maestro? No. Elite? No. Heavyweight poster? No. Able to be rational and not over-react to individual results? Yes.

The concern I have is whether we are trying to force a switch in formation/ style too early. I think before Jim left, assuming we were sticking with the formation from the previous season, there was only a few signings to the first team that really needed making (gk,rcb, lwb, 2 number 10s) and most fans could probably have named them. Unfortunately as 442 highlighted with Beckwith, we’ve got some great players now who don’t seem to have a role in this team. I worry we are asking the players to do too much in moving up a league, learning a new system and (for some) play in a new position.

I’m not against a change in system and style, I just wonder whether this was a change that Watson felt was best to do now rather than over a more prolonged period of time.

*The silverlining is if it doesn’t work, I think recruitment has been strong and consistent enough to ensure we could switch back to last season’s system fairly easily.

That's simply not going to happen. Watson has a different mindset to McNulty, and his methods have been pretty successful (albeit at a lower level), which is why he was recruited

Footballers may take time to adapt to a different way of playing, even where the intention is to mainly keep the ball on the floor, but reverting back to a previous system which not all of them are familiar with is a non-starter

It's likely they've been taken out of their comfort zone, but football isn't meant to be like taking to the field in an armchair

and on the other hand, IW hasn't won anything yet and lower league footballers need even clearer roles and continuity of formation and partnerships than Premier league players.

Would it be fair to say you are one of many Dale fans who would prefer IW's mindset over McNulty's?

Whilst applauding McNulty getting us promoted, i can't say i'm gutted to see him move on, and good luck to him

It's way, way too early to make judgements about his replacement, but i can already admire his positivity. I don't need lessons on the 'football intelligence' of players at whatever level, but many of the Dale squad have come up through academies at a higher level and part of that process will include adaptability. When i referred to "comfort zone", the amount of running required by Watson has already been discussed. I assume footballers, at any professional level, can run and think at the same time

Thanks and equally I was very concerned about McNulty's departure and agreed it is too early to make conclusive judgments.

But based on what we've seen so far presumably you accept there is an entirely justifiable view from many other Dale fans that McNulty's ability to win football matches is more important than the way he won them and there is nervousness that IW is forcing a load of square pegs into round holes which so far hasn't won any.

The friendlies have been disappointing from a fans perspective , I guess the question is " what has Watson found out as a result" ? And how will the loss of Jenkins with what looked like a significant injury affect his plans? We have conceded 10 in 4 friendly games and scored 7 so it would seem the defence needs to be finalised as quickly as possible and allowed to start operating as a unit...Up front, Mani D ambled through the game last night and Rodney has not accepted a number of decent chances in the last couple of games . The new left winger created both goals last night and you would imagine a centre forward would be licking his lips in anticipation of his crosses and Hannant was lively up to the sending off.
I think the manpower is there, I remain unconvinced by the tactics or the overarching "system" . There is little doubt we will need to step up considerably in L2, I think Watson now needs to decide on his starting 11 and who he needs on the bench and play them. Teams thrive on consistancy, footballers thrive in systems that suit their skill sets , the magic happens when skills and system becme embedded and repeatable week after week....so far its been a bit chaotic in terms of who plays where and why, with some strange choices. Add some bad luck with injuries and perhaps the team choices have been unavoidable but the sooner a predictable first 11 is available the better.

McNulty style of play, was hard to watch at times, but one factor that as not been mentioned is McNulty generally made some good signings, he also signed some poor and as a result, our squad was better then the others in the NL, thanks to a bigger budget provided by the Ogden's.

in respect to Watson, we have not seen his tactics or signings in action, against other more experienced EFL teams, then we can judge his style of football and signings. Ian Watson has made a big step up from the NLN to the EFL, and he needs to learn very quickly to see if his tactics work can within the EFL.

So cannot wait a couple of months, when we could be deep in the mire and the fans will become rebellious by nature of seeing defeats and poor performances. So Ian Watson needs to prove he as the ability to provide a winning team with a short period of games, because the average fan is not that patient.

Why aren’t they patient?

Since when did Dale fans have a reputation of being rebellious?

Even during the worst of times under McNulty, supporters remained pretty much behind the team on a matchday - it was also obvious what he was trying to achieve. More or less all the noise was online. In fact, even under other managers who were obviously shocking results wise, supporters would do their best to give them a chance.

If we can’t wait a couple of months before risking such a reaction, then it’s a fair assumption Spotland has become Boundary Park.

Disagree. Compared to other fanbases, Rochdale fans are incredibly patient.

Anyone seen ‘Trev’? Is he off playing golf with Duffy?

I can't agree with that, i think it could be the second half of the season before we start seeing his plans starting to pay off. Oldham were in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle last season leading up to Xmas and then improved with a bit more recruitment in January, in particular bringing in a goalscorer on loan. It could take a few months of struggle but lets not start panicking if we're in the bottom four or five and shouting for the managers head. If we're competitive in games and improving we will be fine. Unity is a big thing, the players and the manager and his assistant have to be all pulling in the same direction.

To be honest i think it could have been a early struggle had McNulty stayed, it's a very tough league this. There is also the possibility that we get off to a flyer, i wouldn't discount that neither. Fans are going to have to get used to us losing a lot more games than last season in this league, that would be perfectly normal. Just half of last seasons wins will probably see us retain our EFL status and that's the number one priority after the promotion and a summer of upheaval.

What a load of nonsense.

It's the likes of you who are rebellious and impatient; don't tar "the fans" with the same brush.
