We need a couple more players. We can’t keep signing people just because of an extraordinary injury list.
Ramming played well. We played 4-2-3-1. Hopefully that will stop any rebellious feelings developing.
I thought we looked ok, still a bit too open at the back but better with three midfielders than a forward as the 10. What pleased the most was that we had much more of the game. Better than the constant trading of the ball seen previously.
Silcott-Duberry will be a big player if we can keep him fit. |
After watching the game I think East would be better in the 10 as Francis and East are two one paced and Gilmour offers a bit more mobility playing a bit further back. Hopefully Pettit and Hannant are okay. They were part of the celebrations with the supporters at the end so fingers crossed.

Sherring doesn’t look match fit yet. Would play Moss with EEL.
However for those clamouring for more additions, we have Wilson and Maguire to come back too. At some point we have to go with what we have.
The only defensive addition that can be justified is a left back with Beckwith being injured. Even then, it’s not like the NL where they can go back once he’s fit again. Do we get one until January or is is that budget better used elsewhere?
Would rather a centre forward now and despite all the injuries, I think our squad is pretty good and we have to learn to work with what we have.
(On a contradictory side note, with the Jenkins injury and the knock that Pettit took would make me want to try and sign Edwards. Especially as we know he can do a job at full back too now) |  |

Agree about Rodney. He might just do something coming off the bench now and again but not sure he can make the step up
Nothing highlights this more than when he found himself with space on the left but pushed the ball too far ahead of himself for the single defender between him and a run on goal to pick up easily
Then, he'd cornered a defender with the ball high up the pitch and instead of keeping up the pressure chose blatantly to push him over... free kick against us, brainless
So you might say i'm getting in my Rodney-bashing early, but look at the evidence on the pitch. Watson will be seeing this with his own, fresh eyes and will likely use him accordingly. We can do better [Post edited 1 Aug 19:43]

I'd say East is too slow to play that role in League 2 with Mani D up top. Rodney is another who suffers from the new formation - a left winger he isn't. But in the 4-4-2 against Farnham (admittedly lower opposition) he was highly effective and we made the most chances in our games to date. Our strikers will benefit from a settled solid team around them.
Agree with DA - he is getting in his Rodney bashing early. Rodney did lose the ball but Francis, TAR and Hayes all lost the ball in dangerous positions more than once and Hayes also gave away 'brainless' free kicks. Let's be fair - many of the squad have had a mixed start to the season. | |

Apparently I think Watson said Jenkins as an ACL injury and could be out for some time, I don't know the time frame for this type of injury. Also if the rumours are correct and we are trying to sign Smith from Wigan and Brown from Derby on loan, would add numbers, and if we add Corey Edwards to the squad, the squad becomes stronger. I would still look for a defender and experience striker even on short contracts. [Post edited 1 Aug 19:49]

Many players will be trying too hard to impress the Manager at this stage, lots of new blood affecting the more established players to show what they can do too. They have to build trust in each other, its takes time and given the chopping and changing that has gone on through pre- season, those llttle nuances that depend on a sense of what your teammate will do next are not yet in place...The continuing list of injuries is both worrying and counter-productive , patnerships are disrupted, anticipation becomes a wait and see rather than an immediate understanding....only time and minutes on the pitch will fix these problems. Disagree on East, I believe he can easily play the 10 role. He has a remarkable ability to ghost around unnoticed to pick up the ball and link play, he doesn't really need to be quick or even strong the way he plays.
To me today Harvey didn't look quite at it for most of the game (match fitness?) and Francis just needs to speed up a little in possession. He needs a fighter alongside him but it's clear he has quality on the ball. Hannant and Hayes terrified their full backs. Very positive.
Agree with those saying Bilongo had a good game. Thought last season signing him was a mistake but credit to him for his performance. Still worrying the manager saying Beckwith is out for several weeks.
I think we will come good quite quickly this season once confidence is built at the back and these positives can start to link up.

A decent win i didn't expect.
Bradford will provide a much difficult challenge.
Only saw highlights but we look more expansive in our play whilst looking suspect at the back.
Players clearly aren't fully match fit..much rotation will be needed.
Shame about the injuries esp Jenkins.

Pete O'Rourke for what it is worth says that we are the favourites (that could be a plea from his agent to the other clubs for a higher wage).
Attendance - No idea. Quick search on BBC website and Rovers one does not appear to show it.
It will depend on how fit Hannant is and what rotation plans Watson has. We currently have three reliable wingers so I suspect there will be some rotation over the season when they are all fit. | | | |
