| Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 17:14 - Aug 22 by Sandyman | Yes, there were individual player mistakes, the ref was shockingly bad, but every game including friendlies under this manager, we haven't won one game in 90 minutes nor do we look likely to. A few hopeful glimpses today but precious little else. Still comparable to Steve Eyre. Disorganised, feeble and managerially inept. How long must we wait to see something worth watching? Very worrying that I feel almost exactly the same. I know we are missing several key players, but it's the tactics that are wrong from the Management and the fitness and work rate of players who performed well last year is miles off what's required. Referee is a Kettle. Say no more. However; Crawley bossed us almost everywhere today . That's unacceptable. | | | |

Is 5 games too many? 0 points after five games and there's only one way that the season is going. I have been wrong about managers before but yes this appointment is very reminiscent of Eyre and Stockdale at this level.
| Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 17:34 - Aug 22 with 2898 views | Cedar_Room | Well I do think it was better than last week (not hard) but it was still miles off where we need to be. Not sure what Silcott-Duberry did to deserve nothing but a few mins cameo. He was one of the better players last week. Subs made little difference so why leave it so late? Other than a spell at the start of the second half we never got going. Lose next week and there needs to be serious questions asked about Watson. | | | |

| Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 17:01 - Aug 22 by isitme | Second half was a bit better and they got a bit of luck when we had a few half chances. The changes needed to be made earlier. If we are playing this formation long term we need to use one of the wide players as one of the 10s. Beckwith and Wilson could play as the wide defenders. Gilmour and Francis does not have the legs as a partnership. |
The subs far too late and they made a difference We're carrying too many players who either aren't technically good enough at this level, or physically strong enough. The list includes EEL, Sherring, Gilmour and possibly East too. Rodney of course. The sooner Watson can get Adeeko, Taylor up to speed and others back from injury the sooner we'll start to become competitive We gave Crawley a game in the end, and at least Brown looked a handful, our MoM

Still no Maguire, Silcott- Duberry looked decent but should have been give half a game at least, Sherring wouldnt have got into the team at any time over the last 3 seasons [Post edited 22 Aug 18:33]

Once more, got to look to see if there’s interest in East or Gilmour. It’s easy to say with hindsight but we should have looked to cash in earlier in the summer. Great players for the club, but muddying the waters now.

| Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 17:42 - Aug 22 with 2783 views | JimmyRustler | I know others will have a different view but abandoning your plans as a manager after one game (granted it was a shocker) is a massive red flag for me. We have brought in Smith, Hayes and Duberry in to compete for a wide role and we are now already playing a system which doesn’t accommodate any of them? Also, how has Hannant not been a consideration for one of the wing back roles today when he did so well there last season? Bizarre that he played Moss and TAR on what is essentially the wrong flanks but I can only assume Watson did his homework on their 17 and deemed Moss would have more of a chance against him? Either way, I am very very concerned with what I’m seeing and it does reek or an Eyre/Stockdale type situation where the guy seems out of his depth. I really hope to be proven wrong but at the moment I haven’t seen anything to tell me otherwise | | | |

I agree about the red flags. Still early days, but how a Manager can select a RWB (Toby) to play Left Wing whilst leaving a Left Winger (Hannant) on the bench is just football tvvattery. I know very little on football tactics etc but I do know to play left footers on the left and right footers on the right. The similarities between this side and FRM Steve Eyre's side is staggering. I actually think Hogan would be much better than Sherring. When the walking wounded are back things might pick up, but we've had too many Managers who can talk a good game but can't actually manage. It started with Simpson! And the lack of urgency when trying to get back into the game reminded me of a BBM side. And the subs should have been made much sooner. It's just basic stuff really that you'd expect a Manager to know.

| Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 18:07 - Aug 22 with 2560 views | somdale | Its a shame to see us.where we are atm, so much momentum and so many memorable moments last season, and I really think the fans need to realise that those days although very recent are now a thing if the past. We have to learn to stick by the team through good and bad times. So much has changed already in the space of a few short months. The new Gaffer needs our support, time will tell if he is good enough or not, thats a future thing, all we can do is back him and support him. So many changes, so many new faces, some because the first batch of players we bought are injured. The last two games has shown the difference in class between league two and the National league, no easy games, the tempo is much quicker also. Watson plied his trade as a mangaer in a division below the national league, so im sure he is taken a back by the difference in intensity and speed, I know he has been a coach at this level before, but this is his show now. Our players are being found out, our dynamic duo of East and Gilmour no longer dominate the midfield, Ebanks, like a goalkeeper does so many good things but his glaring errors are all to easy to see, Mani has been nowhere near it. The new keeper looks very nervous, but he is following Whatmuff and I dknt think many keepers could do that with any confidence. So here we are, new problems to solve, new challenges to meet. I think we owe it the above mentioned to stand by the lads who gave us so much joy last season, and if and when their time in the first team comes to an end we thank them and support whoever takes their place. It can all too quickly become undone, but I think two games in is far too soon to fly the white flag. | | | |

Going back to that thread about whether to play a back three there were arguments for both approaches. But you’re right, we had obvious options with playing TAR on the right and Hannant on the left which weren’t seen. Baffling. It would have allowed Moss to play right centre back and every gain seen by playing the three (players immediately looking calmer) wouldn’t have been lost by having wingbacks on the wrong side. Can see the argument about Watson not sticking to his preferred formation but it hasn’t worked all preseason and again last week. The players we have can’t play a four. Whether that changes when Maguire is back is yet to be seen but Sherring and EEL can’t. The manager should be praised for acknowledging what hasn’t worked, but the problems have been then added to with the “solutions”. The thinking has become so cluttered already. The other side of that is that supporters have been so accustomed to clear, structured thinking that any change is immediately standing out.

He needs to do much more in open play. It is all very very saying he will score goals but he needs to step up his work rate. We need one creative and one who can get about the pitch and break the game up.

The same was said about him last season; when he doesn’t score, he looks like a passenger. Goals can mask most inefficiencies but I fear he will find them much harder to come by in this league in comparison to the NL and will soon come under fire (rightly so?). If you were judging their performances today, you’d much rather have a Brown type player on the pitch [Post edited 22 Aug 18:21]

| Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 18:23 - Aug 22 with 2419 views | 49thseason | Does Watson know what his best team is yet? Sherring isnt impressing, Francis isnt gelling with Gilmour, East looks lost , TAR isnt in the game enough, Mani only woke up in the last half hour, he and Brown need a lot of work on their partnership if thats what its supposed to be. Silcott- Duberry should have been on much earlier, wilson looked good going forward early in the game but has a lot to learn about defending at this level. Brown is keen and runs a lot but needs to work with Mani to be more effective.. This team still looks like a group who haven't worked out who is doing what yet . Unfortunately the clock is ticking losing 2 games isnt a disaster quite yet , but 3, 4, 5? How long before we are rooted at the bottom? Currently it looks like we are back to square one of 2022/23. The gap between L2 and the National League is wider than many think. Starting with a new Manager and a host of new players is a big job .. we can only wait and see if8ts t9o big.. | Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 18:25 - Aug 22 with 2391 views | EllDale | Did we underestimate Crawley? They won at York although there was a sideshow running parallel to that game. They had a physicality that Dale didn’t; could you imagine Francis catching their team? It’s a good job Sherring settled down to an extent after a shaky start. Crawley’s opener was a shocker to concede. The time for the subs was after EEL’s goal when they were reeling a bit. We’ve actually risen a place in the league though! | | | |
| Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 18:27 - Aug 22 with 2374 views | kel | I’m never normally one to criticise but that was awful. Bizarre tactical setup as already mentioned by others and Crawley clearly worked out at half time that they just had to go down our left as much as possible. Wilson is far too laid back and that played a big part in the (definite - despite the protests) penalty he gave away. He was lucky just before that with that stupid dink over the attacker that nearly gave the ball away. Brown was an our best player by a country mile I thought and I felt sorry for him. Sherring was a liability and was blowing out of his arse after an hour. [Post edited 22 Aug 18:28]

Just noticed that! Shrewsbury Town are matching us for being poo and we are above them on alphabetical order......marvellous. We have a long trip to Colchester next week (who beat Latics today) and then on Tuesday Sept 1st we are at home to Shrewsbury Town so possibly an early relegation battle...... Come on Dale wake up......let's see some of last season's spirit.
| Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 19:00 - Aug 22 with 2126 views | DaleFan7 | We don't seem to have any direction in our play, there's no objective to it and we've made like for like subs until the 85th minute when it was far too late. We're not creating anything, their keeper wasn't tested in the first half apart from a header from far out from Brown. I'm not sure the injured players will make enough difference because they still won't know what they're doing. Like others have said Mani D is a passenger in this system, he's too lazy to go looking for the ball and we don't do enough to get it to him. He won't score 10 goals this season playing like we are and we'd be better off with a smaller but more tenacious player in there. | | | |
| Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 19:00 - Aug 22 with 2127 views | beat_the_bishop | I don’t like to say this but our signings have made us weaker somehow. In addition, our existing core are either not good enough or not performing. I said it on a previous thread I believe we didn’t have enough quality even if Jim had’ve stayed. However, I think his recruitment would’ve been better but that’s guesswork at this stage. I can only really cast real judgement once our squad is thickened out and available. But Watson certainly isn’t helping himself. Making attacking changes at home on the 87th minute when trailing is just feeble. He spent too much time sat down wondering what to do I think. | | | |

I don't think we underestimated them. anyone could see they are streets ahead of their team of last season based on the TV game against York alone. I think they bossed the game for lengthy periods today but we were yet again awful. I have yet to see anything that indicates that we will be other than in a relegation battle, and so far we don't have enough soldiers. Agree that their opening goal was amateurish from Moss initially, and then from the back three combined. They could and probably should have had a second shortly afterwards following another run down our right, with Moss again left chasing shadows.

| Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 19:20 - Aug 22 with 1974 views | rich_dale | Not one for knee jerk reactions and we're only 2 league games in but it all feels quite clueless and factoring in all of pre-seaaon it's been 2 or 3 goals shipped each time, no wins in 90 mins and now 2 defeats to relegation favourites. Wonder if the Board have the available Maynard in the back of their minds. | | | |
| Refwatch - Rochdale v Crawley Town on 19:20 - Aug 22 with 1961 views | dingdangblue | First time I've seen this 'new' team and it was poor. Starting from the back the keeper looks like an accident waiting to happen and replacing Gordon for Sherring looks like replacing a Rolls Royce for a clapped out Lada. We didn't look like we had a 'plan' of how we wanted to play. Not sure what our identity is with this new manager. Conceding at least 2 every game so far is an awful base to win games. I'd be contacting Stuart Maynard as quick as possible. | |

Agreed , the problem is and has been, that he is essentially a goal-hanger, he needs crosses along the 6 yard line and isnt getting any. People mistake him for an old fashioned centre forward who bullies a centre half, because he is 6' 6"or whatever, but, I dont think thats his game. He needs wingers to put the ball into the danger zone for him to get on the end of with his long legs... he is a tall finisher...Figuring out how he and Brown will work together is a whole other discussion... At the moment Brown is running about like a Labrador that been kept inside for a week, there needs to be a better understanding but it will only come with time and games and some managerial / coaching input.... The Gilmour and Francis pairing is also problematic and isnt worth playing East out of position for.. he ( East) looked lost today and Adeeko will only muddy the water more especially now Taylor is in the mix.... Its all very messy right now....Watson has decisions to make...
