I think Flint could be our most important signing. He's a no nonsense defender, he does what he needs to when he needs to and nothing more, he doesn't try to turn into prime Iniesta playing balls everywhere. It's what we need, especially in front of a keeper as poor as Ramming.
Oldham were the better team towards the end of the second half and it could have been a different story if they punished Rammings mistake but I thought we dealt with them really well in the second half. | | | |

Had similar thoughts
We still try to play it on the ground but with more intent. The times we overplayed it we conceded possesion in dangerous areas, then went more direct, the ball over the top for our second a good example
I'd like to think that once fit, and providing we're making progress, EEL will have to wait his turn rather than an automatic choice
Given Maguire's history, unlikely he'll see the rest of the season out (once starting) but it'd be interesting to see EEL alongside Flint, an even more experienced CB and how that plays out in terms of leadership [Post edited 19 Sep 15:52]

There’s far more chaos to our play at present. Little or no control but that’s ok if we defend well.
At present we’re a team set out to get results, entertainment is definitely secondary for now as long as collect points. |  |

We only got lucky in situations, not in the result. Dale issues aside, they were awful and got what they deserved. Nothing. |
But, whilst there were improvements (formation with 2*10s & Gilmour sitting) on another day we lose that 2-3.
Ramming is bad for my cholesterol & I'd have swopped Wilson & Moss. Thought Brown pressed hard and made some good breaks (more than Diesuruvwe) and Middleton with effective crosses all game & some good covering of Moss. Adeeko & Taylor seem a good partnership - Adeeko was excellent again & Gilmour had his most effective game this season.,
Thought Smith less so and seemed to be complaining a lot. Flint (after 4 misplaced passes/headers) grew into the game but big congratulations to Tasker (bar one failed dribble) - defended strongly, confident and made some good forward runs.
Subs wee well timed though I'd have changed Smith at HT. Agree that Oldham ran out of ideas & surprisingly we looked stronger in the 2nd half

Fans are like that these days. Supporters are fairer and, even when concerned about results and issues, able to try and look at a route forward. Funny thing is, a couple of wins and those same Oldham fans will be saying how they’re winning promotion by Easter again.
Won’t ever be surprised by how reactionary and hypocritical football fans are.
Good win today. Oldham as poor, quality wise, as expected since looking at their squad preseason. Laughable that having EFL experience on and off the pitch was supposedly the reason they were an automatic promotion bet. Dale solid and for the first twenty mins really threatening. Brown had a poor game,but excellent goal, Gilmour back towards his best in midfield and the likes of Moss and Flint good at the back.
It’s a totally different team now (only one starter from Wembley + Moss) and a side that maybe isn’t playing how Watson initially envisaged. But it’s about getting results. 16th is fine. |
We all see the game slightly differently, but can’t see how Browne had a poor game. He is very good at occupying his marker, dragging them where they don’t want to go, works really hard and score a cracker today. Him and Mani are chalk and cheese in every way. To me he is doing just fine.
Was amazed the Wilson appeared to be detailed to mark Fondop. He was clearly going to loose that battle. He needed replacing a bit earlier with Maguire.
We struggle to gain control for large parts of the game, but nonetheless we are now competing. We are getting there. That was a tough test today and we passed it. Delighted to get the win in front of a 6k crowd.
We are still deep in the woods but a path out has started to emerge. Credit to all concerned.

Wind played a big factor today, clearances, throw ins all were going far shorter into the wind than with it. Ball for our second goal would have not reached in the first half.
Oldham bossed the first half with the wind.
Second half they struggled and Flint for me won everything into the box.
Liked Middleton, worked tirelessly both directions. Thought Gilmour had a good game also.

We started well and Tasker and Smith linked up down the right and then we kind of stopped playing, got a bit swamped in midfield and probably have been behind at the break. In the second half we looked more comfortable defensively and the substitions were proactive. If you have two wide players on the bench you can afford to spell at least one after 60 minutes. Maguire and Flint looked solid and I thought apart from dawdling on the ball a bit, Wilson had a decent game against Fondop. Certainly an education for the young lad.
Brown had an interesting game. He worked hard and won a few duels when the ball was played up to him. He did lack service but when he got his chance he took it well rolling the defender and hitting the corner. Hopefully the first of many. He is a willing worker and offers more pace than other options.
I still think we looked a bit open at times in midfield and how we ended with Francis sitting and Gilmour and Adeeko playing either side could be an option. When they get more match fitness our wide players could be a real threat as they have undoubted quality. |  | | |

When the players were gathered at the Pearl St to take the post-match plaudits, Flint stayed towards the back, aloof from it all
I love that. He was chatting with one of the backroom staff, watching the younger players do their thing

Having put a couple of short passes into midfield astray, his experience told him to stop doing it. Towards the end, he took the ball in our box and hoofed it into the stand. Ramming is a big concern, his kicking amd the choices he makes when being closed down are a worry, he also doesn't commend his area well enough when he comes out for a catch. Big shift put in and Gilmour was absolutely everywhere Moss is just quality. We do look a bit more physical and aggressive which is nice to see, I thought the whole team looked too soft (nice) last season |

That’s a good point about the reaction towards Watson. You’d think some would have learnt after similar reactions towards the last manager after disappointing defeats.

Is everything perfect after the last couple of games? Far from it. But we have the beginnings of a new team playing a different way that’s starting to get results.

I feel pleased for Watson and the Board after today. Its clear things are coming together faster now as players return to fitness. Flint is a Master stroke signing and exactly what a young defence needs, a Sergeant Major to give the orders and set the example...There were glimpses of Watsons "system" too, with pace on the wings and Maguire's late arrival to cement the win...standards being set. Yes, lowest level in terms of divisions. Not in standards of football having seen the Fourth Division in the 80s/90s.
But then again, I never had a superiority complex about non league or looked down on the clubs there. In my opinion, that would be disrespectful. Others may disagree.
We weren’t “nice” or “soft” last season either, again an opinion. The 33 wins indicates we were a team of focused winners. Is there other evidence that points to us being “nice” or “soft”? | |

We had a soft belly last season while in the main relying on tippy tappy possession based football it worked results wise no doubt about it, whether you enjoy watching that is all down to personal preference, I found large chunks of games as dull as dish water and boring, some friends of mine felt similar watching City too under Pep for the very same reason.
Id say having the least amount of yellow/red cards out of all 24 teams goes someway to back up the above too, still not sure how winning a certain amount of games quantifies a team for being either nice/not nice though, how does that work? [Post edited 19 Sep 19:09]

It’s evolving into a different type of football, both from what we’ve seen over the last few seasons and from what we saw under Watson preseason.
Be interesting if the next step is to totally stop playing out from goal kicks. Flint doesn’t look comfortable with it and we look better with our defenders winning anything coming back that them being involved building play near their own goal. | |

Don’t often associate a team so focused on winning, whatever the level, and achieving that with numbers rarely seen in the game as being soft or nice.
Don’t recall any games where we looked to have a soft belly, of course there were times we didn’t win when we should have (Halifax and Scunthorpe) - that’s football, but the counter point would be amount of games we won with steely determination until the end. Wembley being the obvious example.
The only factual part about rhe National League being “lower” is that it is in the pyramid. The standard of football is all about opinion. We played teams with teams that were of a lower standard than last year’s NL, again, an opinion. But one which can be illustrated by looking at the teams at the bottom end of Div. 4 in, say 86/87. Altrincham last season had much more about them than Burnley back then…
If 33 wins can be caveated by some reference to the division we were in, it’s a struggle to see how we’ll ever be able to view last season as a once in a lifetime achievement. Accept that the football wasn’t to everyone’s liking, always have. Wasn’t to mine a lot of the time either, but supported what was visibly working. [Post edited 19 Sep 19:55]

Great result today. Bizarre first half with some absolutely comical passages of play from both sides. Ramming’s error and Fondop’s shocker was bad enough that we both deserve to be relegated. Much more assured in the second half, and Dan Moss just gets better and better.
One slight niggle - ‘Rochdale’s a shithole…’ followed by our reply of ‘We already know…’ It was mildly amusing when it was first heard ten years ago but now it’s just stupid. The town patently isn’t a shithole, especially not when compared with the likes of Oldham. Have a bit of local pride! [Post edited 19 Sep 20:33]
