Just so glad that we escaped from that glue pot of a league.

Boreham Wood haven't suffered from a Wembley hangover or the loss of Abdulmalik in the slightest, pleased for them as they play some good stuff. Lee Clark falls on his sword at Hartlepool after they got beaten by Worthing, surely won't get another chance somewhere else now?

Don’t often associate a team so focused on winning, whatever the level, and achieving that with numbers rarely seen in the game as being soft or nice.

Don’t recall any games where we looked to have a soft belly, of course there were times we didn’t win when we should have (Halifax and Scunthorpe) - that’s football, but the counter point would be amount of games we won with steely determination until the end. Wembley being the obvious example.

The only factual part about rhe National League being “lower” is that it is in the pyramid. The standard of football is all about opinion. We played teams with teams that were of a lower standard than last year’s NL, again, an opinion. But one which can be illustrated by looking at the teams at the bottom end of Div. 4 in, say 86/87. Altrincham last season had much more about them than Burnley back then…

If 33 wins can be caveated by some reference to the division we were in, it’s a struggle to see how we’ll ever be able to view last season as a once in a lifetime achievement. Accept that the football wasn’t to everyone’s liking, always have. Wasn’t to mine a lot of the time either, but supported what was visibly working.

Opinions are all subjective, league positions are still ability based and always have been, same with kids football the better teams play in a higher league for a reason.

Last season we were less physical and nice whilst lacking pace all over the team too, something that looks like its been/being addressed with various signings most recently Flint who as pointed out in this post by DA struggled early in the game today whilst trying to pass the ball out from the back, hes far bigger than anyone we had last season and his dominance and aggression to defend was massively needed in this side, that's not an insult to last season more an acknowledgement to what this side needs.

Its not a coincidence we picked up so many wins whilst also playing at the lowest level in our history, the very same reason why we wont and never have won as many games in this division, because its far harder and a better ability level.

My point was last season, the best in our history for winning so often, was against sides and with a side that was far better than some other seasons we’ve played in the league.

Just don’t think there’s any need to caveat or play down last season’s achievement or that you don’t win so many games by being “nice” or “soft”, which is totally different to being physical. To do so would be, in my opinion, disrespectful to the level we were deservedly playing at. Same as phrases like “part time league”, “pub team” etc.

Did we need to change for playing a division higher? Undoubtedly. Adding pace and physicality was always going to be needed. That’s why Hayes and Maguire were already on our radar before the change in manager.

As an aside, do I think Boreham Wood are better than every side we’ve played so far this season? Walsall excepted, as I didn’t see them, yes.

Great result. Moss immense again - get him a new contract ASAP before Jim starts sniffing around.

Miraculous that we have kept another clean sheet with the calamitous Mr Bean act in goal. Hope he sends Fondop a Christmas card.

Ramming is absolutely fine as a goalkeeper & he will have learned a lesson after Flint gave him a good talking to. He made a great save in the 1st half & caught everything in the 2nd.

Makes me laugh still that not getting players aimlessly sent off or booked means we were “soft” We just dominated the ball enough under McNulty that we didn’t need to make stupid challenges. Give me that rather than the daft sendings off we’ve had so far this season.

Great result today. Bizarre first half with some absolutely comical passages of play from both sides. Ramming’s error and Fondop’s shocker was bad enough that we both deserve to be relegated. Much more assured in the second half, and Dan Moss just gets better and better.

One slight niggle - ‘Rochdale’s a shithole…’ followed by our reply of ‘We already know…’ It was mildly amusing when it was first heard ten years ago but now it’s just stupid. The town patently isn’t a shithole, especially not when compared with the likes of Oldham. Have a bit of local pride!
[Post edited 19 Sep 20:33]

I agree Shun.

I recently took the tram to Manchester which went through Oldham. The amount of boarded up windows I saw through the shoddy* town of Oldham made me wonder if their locals still thought the Window Tax was in existence.

I imagine window cleaners in Oldham have to carry a sander.

*Apparently Rochdale folk used to call Oldham a shoddy town 150 years ago because the cloth they produced in their mills was inferior to Rochdale cloth.

As for the game - not that good, but the battling we want was there. As they say, "it's who wants it the most". That was us today.

Looking back I suppose Oldham could and should have scored.
There were two or three occasions in the early stages of the second half when the ball fizzed across the Dale six yard box and only needed a touch.
But it didn’t happen.
In some ways the game reminded me of a win over Huddersfield in September 2010 where we took an early lead and then had to defend an absolute onslaught before sneaking a couple of late goals to clinch it.
Can’t fault the lads for fighting spirit and determination.
There was a nice touch at the end when Waller ran onto the pitch to high five Ramming and give him a big hug.
Shame the Fans Forum isn’t this week!
As an aside has it been confirmed that Rodney is injured or completely out of favour.

I feel Flint has made a significant difference..often helping those around him with less experience.

We still seem physically lightweight in the midfield losing many 50 50 challenges..need a good holding midfielder who can distribute and hold the ball.

Forwards are surviving on scraps at times.

Still work in progress but now heading in the right direction.

Flint has the physicality to deal with the balls pumped into the box. Him and Maguire should be able to deal with that. Add Beckwith and Tasker either side and you have the physicality . Give them and Ramming a few games together and we should have a bit more stability. It takes time to build that defensive trust.

It appears that Watson wants a sitter to play with a more mobile midfielder. Yesterday Gilmour was playing more of the sitter. Adeeko is fairly mobile but Francis, whilst reasonable on the ball is not the most mobile. It is a shame Pettit got injured when he did as he would definitely be an option there.

Once the wide players get up to speed I think the forwards will get better service.

Only two players from last season started yesterday. That is some upheaval but one I fully understand. The quality in the team needed improving and for me it has. Tasker has been given a tough gig so far. Starting 48 hours after arriving. Then away at Walsall and the clash yesterday. He is already looking to be a shrewd signing. I think Adeeko will become a first name on the team sheet type player for us this season, while Brown and Flint will also be hard to dislodge from the side.
Having said that credit to Dan Moss who found it difficult to break into the NL team at times but is now thriving. Fortune has favour him. Without the injuries to Maguire and EEL he would have been bench warming. Stepping into the CH role has been the making of him and his performances mean he now owns the shirt.
No mistaking that was Iw’s team out there yesterday. Hope they can solidify what they have in the last few games. Gate sizes will hold up if the team continues to play with commitment and passion.

It was such a crucial signing on the back of EEL’s injury where we lost such an experienced player. The pressure would have been to rush Maguire back but instead he’s been able to be introduced gradually which will hopefully mean he won’t suffer further injuries.

There was a post earlier in the thread where Flint’s start to the game was a bit hit and miss, where players like himself/Maguire/EEL have an advantage over younger players is that they quickly put mistakes behind them to still concentrate on defending solidly for the rest of the game.

Watson may have stumbled across a different way of getting results with this, one which BBM utilised well when we stayed up in 18/19. Let defenders defend, try and play the football when they can but not where it clouds the thinking.

Absolutely right about how Flint stopped playing the ball to midfield where the player was facing his own goal and immediately under pressure; sometimes the pass didn't get there at all, putting us under huge pressure

That's something that EEL will have to learn to stop doing as and when he returns, and having someone like Flint alongside him (presuming Maguire doesn't also make himself an automatic choice) will help him

The short ball into midfield, if there's a man in space with a clear through route, can be very effective. It's the doing it for the sake of it that Flint knew instinctively wasn't working

EEL will be fine with the change (if that’s something Watson wants to make) as seen during that period under BBM. That he was able to adapt and prove people wrong to become someone who could help construct attacks as the central player in a back three is another illustration of managers finding the best way to utilise the players they have.

There’s an obvious change, but we still need to reduce the amount of chances we give up in general though.

He wasn't proving anyone wrong when JM tasked him with that style of play, since no-one had questioned whether he could adapt to it or not under previous regimes

When EEL returns, he'll find it's a different team. There's been a great deal of confusion around how we should be playing among the players themselves which has translated into poor performances and results, and the intense criticism that's come Watson's way. That's what he's having to overcome, and doing so has required bringing in someone like Flint

It's possibly easier to learn something rather than unlearn it, which is what i was alluding to with EEL and that applies also to all those who Watson inherited from JM, whilst bedding in new players too. The confusion was arising through the players who were having to unlearn (i.e. taking the easy, pass back option more often than not) which often made our play as boring as hell, even given the huge excitement generated by last gasp goals and hanging on at Wembley to eventually win promotion

Absolutely delighted with the result and back to back clean sheet.

Working progress there is still a lot to still get right.

How Ramming thinks a Cruyff turn on his own 6 yard line is acceptable is a mystery. Practice practice practice and play the ball much quicker. Probably 10 or more times yesterday eventually kicked the ball as it brushed the laces of the on rushing Oldham player.

Flint had a shocker for 20 minutes.. then grew into the game and finished strong.

Best game in a Dale shirt from Brown (encouraging)

In my eyes we still look miles off.. and that might be a good thing if we are no where near our potential ceiling combined with week on week improvement.

Dale started well and looked to have a plan and some structure and some legs.. 15 minutes until half time though was a difficult watch as the plan unravelled probably as Oldham reshaped themselves. Individually we have some good players. I would just like to see an extended period of building pressure from both the left AND the right and of course centrally.

We have just won bragging rights and do seem to be heading in a better direction even though we will not get that same amount of luck / opponent incompetence every week.

Up The Dale!.

Without getting into the merits of EEL, Flint reminds me of an outfield version of Lonergan. Through vocality and leadership, he actually doesn't have to do much defending (can't remember him making a tackle in the last 2 games and his headed clearances were hit-and-miss yesterday.) Would love to see him and Maguire start together by the end of the month.

There was plenty of criticism and questioning of EEL’s suitability for the role on his return from a long injury during the season when we started using that formation. When it came to performances, results and achievements in a leadership role, that reactionary stance was proven to be wrong.

Watson came in and looked to build from the back in a similar way, just with less players in the back line and greater distances. It was causing us untold problems, at that stage we’d probably have been better going more direct.

There were still examples of that initial approach yesterday, except it now seems the defenders have been give licence to clear their lines when they see fit. Having an extra man to join the midfield in Taylor helps too, if he’s playing as the ‘10’, his natural instincts mean he can be an option for a pass deeper, unlike Brown who plays as a secondary striker when in that role.

Of course these are only assumptions based on watching one game, what goes on in training and how they want to play longer term is something only Watson and the players will know for sure.

Agree on that last point, we're very much a work in progress and whilst Watson might've felt obliged to continue with playing out from the back inherited from JM (which our owners stated they were looking to do when recruiting, and Watson himself seemed to favour) the evolution since then has been towards the reality of what that meant in L2 in terms of physicality

What goes on in training... and also what conversations Watson may have been having with those at the helm so that everyone's on the same page.. yes, work to do, but i certainly get the impression it's happening

Couldn't make it but absolutely delighted with the win and sounds like progress is being made. Seen some great content being shared online too.

My only non-football related criticism is can we stop getting the Dale flag the wrong way round in the Pearl Street. Happened v Scunthorpe and again yesterday. Seems like a minor but it's just a bit of a silly own goal when we're trying to build an atmosphere.

Would hope there’s a clear instruction that he’s not to do it unless there’s an obvious pass on. If not, get rid.

Of course, it would also require the whole approach at the back to be looked at too with defenders aware when/when not to give it to him.

What I would say is that yesterday saw him claim some crosses well. That’ll build some confidence.
