Watching the Ireland v England game I find myself again amazed that Grealish can be considered ahead of Eze. Is it because I am biased toward Eze? I know I am. Or is it that Grealish really is overrated? |
I am obviously biased towards Eze. However, every time I watch him, I come to the sad conclusion that what is holding him back and preventing serious interest from the 'big' clubs, is his lack of defensive play.
He doesn't press well, his tracking back is too late and half paced and his marking and tackling still need a lot of work.
I have seen occasional signs that he can defend; I thought he was better at it during the Euros, with Southgate trusting him at left back for a while and there was one tackle yesterday, nicking the ball on the edge of the opponents penalty area. However, on the whole any defensive improvement shown at the Euros has largely regressed again.
It seems to me, that Eze is comfortable doing the beautiful stuff with the ball, that he is so good at, but suffers from a mixture of nerves and lack of self confidence when it comes to the grubby side of the game.
This defensive side of play is necessary from every player at the top level today and maybe you get a bit more of that from the other skilfull attackers in the England squad and at all the 'top' clubs.
He is 26 now. For Rrrs sake and his, I really want him to make that final breakthrough to the very highest level. I fear it may not happen. This 'flaw' in his all round performance is holding him back and maybe a reason why he was released by numerous clubs before he developed with us. |  | |  |

It's interesting to read your take on Eze, francisbowles. I've noticed he's not the best at the defensive side of the game but still feel he's not quite as bad as you say.
I do see him as a player who plays his part in the team as well as doing what he does best. That said, I read that Steve Parish was shocked at the lack of interest in Eze this summer so perhaps your perspective on him is right. |  | | |

It was a reasonably good chance but I never felt there was much chance of Ireland getting back into it and the last ten minutes or so was very comfortable once the subs had come on and we were closer to adding another than they were to scoring. | | | |

Wouldn’t get too carried away . Very poor Ireland team with a nonentity of a midfield.
England can have as many as they want .

Games, when he came on looked very good. Always being available, body shape ready to move the ball on when receiving.
He's only about 5ft 8, and usually plays further forward I think.

I was very impressed with England in general.
Caveats:
1) Their out ball was always the same: over the top for Gordon on the ageing Coleman and the lazy Doherty. It worked a treat. I would imagine that the tactics would have been more varied if they had to be i.e. if Ireland were better.
2) They eased off second half. Why? England are more of an ould enemy to Ireland than vice versa but Ireland are still arival. England should have put them to the sword. 4-0. 5-0. Subs scoring. No mercy. | |

Just stuck it on. I was in Bulgaria not long ago and ended up going to their qualifier with Lithuania- they were atrocious.
Lavery who played against us for Cambridge just came on. That’s the level of the squad sadly. Bradley is a decent player and they put him in midfield to get him involved more than at full-back. The defence should be ok with Hume, Ballard, McNair and Lewis and Isaac Price is a kid who went from Everton to Standard Liege so presumably quite promising. Up front and central midfield they’re extremely weak. | | | |
