Charlie Kelman’s Leyton Orient 12:00 - Feb 8 with 58073 viewsDannyPaddox

Up against Man City in the FFS that was offside FA Cup. I prepare to stand corrected but I think Charlie is still our player but as I take as much interest in modern football players contracts and transfers as I do in mobile phone contracts I could be wrong. Either way seems like a good lad and having a decent season with a club I like so up the O’s!

Up against a central defender today in Ruben Dias who’s worth approx £75 mil … would love to see Charlie meg him.

He might have progressed since, but the 'great finisher' myth all stems from a solitary off the cuff remark by Warburton that's somehow morphed into a universally accepted truth.

Except it's not. And clearly neither Warburton nor any of his successors have believed it for a moment.

You might be right.

But when we signed him from Southend Les Ferdinand said:

“He is a goalscorer and, at just 18, has scored goals in league football already, which alerted us."

https://www.qpr.co.uk/news/club-news/charlie-kelman-completes-qpr-switch/

He certainly hasn't shown much of that until this season with Orient.

‘He certainly hasn’t shown much of that until this season’

Who has though?

Other than the Swiss war horse, no one has come near 10 goals for ages have they? Certainly none in this side.

I‘m not certain he’s going to set the league alight next season, but writing him off is a beggers being choosers situation.

No one in our position should be turning their nose up at a 15 -20 goal a season striker in league one. There are no Harry Kanes queuing up to join us on a free.

All we are saying, is give Kels a chance.

I'm not writing him off.

He has certainly done enough this season to deserve a chance in the first team next season.

But he isn't quick, he's not particularly tall, and his career strike rate is nothing special.

If he gets judged just on his data he might not be given a chance next season. Particularly not if we get any offers for him.

I hope I'm wrong and he gets the chance next season and takes it. But he still has a lot to prove at this level.

Yeah that’s fair.

I think he get a place next season, purely on the basis he’s probably cheaper than what we have, which is basically just Frey.

League one current top scorers

Richard Kone, Wycombe 18
Jay Stansfield, Birmingham 16
Charlie Kelman, Orient 15
Louie Barry, Stockport 15

What valuation do you think Kelman is compared to them?

Thought provoking

I think someone bid £6mill for Kone in January didn’t they?

Stansfield was £8mill I think

To prise Barry away his parent club will want £5mill plus

Maybe we’ve got something - I did hear that Kelman could be the next Rooney when we signed him; maybe he’s shagging old hookers.

I say keep but do we play to his needs?

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Stansfield is as £15m, wasn’t he? It’s mad.

But it puts into perspective Kelman’s potential value.

I've heard people saying we should sell him.

Problem is, I don't trust the club to buy a striker who is better.

Looking at options next season...

Frey, works hard but limited
Celar, clearly can score goals but more is a box type player
Kolli, the most creative striker we have but needs time to develop
Kelman, coming in full of confidence. If he gets a few goals in preseason he'll be buzzing

A lot of sense in what you say.

However, the club needs to assess, decide, and act quickly on this. Either we're going to be Stoke cashing in on Mike Sheron or, we've got Les Ferdinand returning from a career-making loan spell.

But as someone pointed above, his actual minutes are more cameos and if we're going to stick with him, then he needs to know he's got a good run of games to build on this season, and not bench, starting the early league cup game, followed by bench.

Agree.

If he were an Orient player, we'd be paying at least £2.5m for him I reckon.

Celar scored 21 in 23/24, he was the top scorer in the Swiss league.

Two strikers, both can score goals. Whether they can do it in the championship is another question

Preseason is going to be really really important to the strikers this season.

Plus a new defence 🙄

I'm not sure if it's been raised above, but with the 2026 WC just around the corner, you'd think Charlie would be very motivated to get into Poch's reckoning.

As for the defence, that's a separate 10-plus pager to come.

Surely concluding that Celar "clearly can score goals" is a bit like deciding Karl Henry "can score 20 yarders" based on one result in a lot of games?

I hope you are right, but...one swallow does not make a summer.

He scored 40 in 95 but if you watch the highlights, most are in all around the penalty spot / six yard box.

Jury's definitely out as to whether he can do it in this country. But my point still remains that he has scored goals previously.

Yeah, I was thinking that. We hardly ever score any goals like ones he does.

No doubt, an hour into the long schlep on the central line train from Leytonstone, that cramp feeling he started to experience around Holborn would be a full-blown hamstring injury by White City, and see him out for three weeks!

thing with Kelman is when he's only started 5 games for us and 3 of those starts were out wide so not sure how anyone can know if he's good enough or not.
Would certainly have him invovled next season so they can finally make a decsion on him

No doubt Kelman should be given an opportunity. Big issue for him could be will we/are we capable of getting any decent balls to him?

One other idea is to offer Madsen to Orient as a player swap (I know he’s on loan, I know, but maybe they’ll forget and just do the deal).

Kelman's goals per game in the league this season (15 in 38), is better than Washington's (27 in 82), prior to our signing him from Peterborough.

Admittedly, a smaller sample size in terms of games. He may not be the answer/partial answer to our inadequacies in front of goal, but he's gone away and performed for an unfancied team, in the O's, who are three points off sixth spot due to his goals and deserves his chance next season.

If it's not with us, he will get his chance with another championship team or one that's promoted into it, Birmingham excepted.

Good, I hope he does get signed/transferred to another Championship Club, more money for QPR and one off the books who struggles in the Championship.
