25/26 Squad on 07:48 - May 23 by Daley_Lama | Re: throw in threat. Unlike most teams in our division- we mostly use throw ins to return the ball to our CH’s. It was a complete surprise when we got a pen against Southend from a great run/throw in. |
The body language from all the players at most set pieces, frre kicks and throw ins is to straight away look to go backwards to retain posession. There are many instances of it in every game we play. A slow methodical, controlled build up.

Most throw ins we return to the opposition. I've lost count of the number of times we just throw down the line hoping for the best. Yes I get it that Jim is a purist and the thought of us being a 'set piece' team probably gives him nightmares but it works at this level. Spennymoor did nothing that 2nd half to earn 2 goals. The 1st we gave them the ball with a ludicrous pass out from our keeper and the 2nd was just launched into our box. Southend and Forest Green both scored their openers with balls into the box. It may be frowned upon but it is very effective. [Post edited 23 May 12:48]

It does really annoy me at times this 'possession' obsession. You could be on the edge of an opponents box or have a throw in in a dangerous area and it means nothing. Rather than put it into the box you could end up back with your keeper in 3 passes and its deemed ok? I've mentioned it before but it happened with England under Southgate at the last Euro final. We'd just equalised and were putting Spain under pressure, we had a throw in on the edge of their box and Walker threw it back towards the halfway line and we totally let them off the hook. I wouldn't have minded but we flung a long throw into the area earlier in the competition when Bellingham scored his last gasp overhead kick! I'm all for keeping possession but when you have a great advanced threat going backwards is just negative for me.

A hard tackling midfield grafter, preferable with a bit of height ( that sounds like Ethan Hamilton) is the main priority.

Players from Luton Town's youth system have done pretty decent jobs for Dale recently. Sam Beckwith has been excellent, Jake Burger has shown promise and, a few years ago, Gaby Osho did a decent job at CB.in his loan spell.. Wouldn't surprise me if we are interested in Pereira.
