The first competitive games will be before League 2 starts, as the Carabao Cup first round is on the weekend of Saturday 8th August.
However, if Crystal Palace win the Europa Conference League next week, us and York (along with Tranmere and Crawley) will have to take part in preliminary round ties in order to make the numbers balance as the Carabao Cup progresses.
This is because a Palace win means nine English clubs will be in European competition next season, which has a knock-on effect on the Carabao Cup as they don't enter until round three.
This affected Oldham and Barnet last year.
Those ties will be before the first round, so potentially on Saturday 1st August, or maybe Tuesday 4th August.
If Palace lose in next week's final, I don't think the preliminary round is needed as there will be one less team in Europe, meaning the numbers will work without need for a preliminary round.

We can’t carry anyone who cannot deliver consistently and be available most weeks.

Whatmuff is great but he needs to be playing every week. The Championship is too big a jump imo. I think he would be fine in L1 but hopefully he sees merit in regular game time in L2. Wherever he goes he is likely to be tested more than he was with us flying high in a mostly poor division. | | | |

Cardiff have already signed Nathan Trott - the keeper they had on loan last season. Whatmuff will want to go somewhere as a Number 1 choice - wouldn't be surprised if York even tried to get him on loan 😲

Riding the pine at Cardiff would not be as beneficial for his career as starting, even if it was in a lower league. Moulden went from starting for us to being on the bench at Northampton. He has not made a first team appearance since the 23-24 season. [Post edited 22 May 9:28]
