| World Cup anyone? 16:59 - Jun 11 with 67262 views | Yorkshire_Dale | With all the comings and goings and excitement at San Spotty,is anyone getting remotely interested in what is just about to start over the pond? I think, looking at the England squad we have a really good chance.....there is a depth of talent without doubt. Must say though I am not getting the purple haze about the competition and prefer to follow what's going on locally. Just hope Haiti do well. What do others think? | | | | |

| World Cup anyone? on 08:12 - Jul 19 by NorthernDale | At times, it seemed more of a pre-season friendly then a proper world cup game. However it does raises questions, if England had not gone negative against Argentina, but had instead brought Rashord and Saka on, instead of Burns and Konsa, to put Argentina on the back foot, we may have made it to the final, instead we tried to defend for thirty minutes. Even the Argentinian manager was surprised that England did not use Saka. I thought Watkins did okay last night, but is Cole Palmer, who was left at home is potentially a better bet at International level in the long-term. Ivan Toney did now't and another one who was poor, was Eze. I must admit, I had my doubts when Spence was included in the squad, but he emerged as an exciting talent. |
Palmer wouldn’t have been able to play centre forward though. However, maybe we saw a glimpse into a possible solution in the future late on - Bellingham looks more that capable of playing no.9. Much more running power than Kane, great finisher, can still drop deep when required and is clever enough to play the role effectively whilst still getting goals.

I thought Toney did OK seeing as he hasn't had much game time but he's not a long term option. We'll never know what would have happened on Wednesday had Tuchel carried on attacking, maybe Argentina would still have overrun us and people would be complaining about that? He really was damned if you do, damned if you don't. Truth is, we're still some way off being a top tier team and had bumbled our way through to the semi finals anyway. I'm happy with third place even if in the grand scheme of things it doesn't mean much. Not bothered about the final, have no real bitterness towards Argentina. Just hope it's another good game.
| World Cup anyone? on 09:27 - Jul 19 with 3079 views | mikehunt | I'd rather hoped this game would prove a more enjoyable watch, with players being able to play with no pressure on them. It well exceeded my expectations: a great game ensued. And, as others have opined, it emphasised the fact that there was simply no excuse to try and defend the semi-final for the last half hour. Saka and Rashford on would have tied the Argies up a bit and, given us a better chance of holding out. Isn't attack the best form of defence? | |

Rashford was causingall sorts of problems sohe takes him off for watkins who immediately turns the ball over that ledto Frances first goal. Unnessary and baffling substitutions...something he excels at.

It's been done to death, but having them on would certainly have had Argentina more wary of throwing too much forward, especially with the yellow cards. Everyone but Tommy T could see that. Oh well. Spain shirt on for the final and if it's only half as entertaining as the match last night it'll still be a cracker.

Agree about that & Spence was brilliant at both ends but I thought Eze had a very good game and his partnership with Rice looked our best combination

That change at half time really was puzzling, and freed up that side of the pitch for France to exploit. They needed no further encouragement His only worthwhile contribution was a successful half-challenge for the ball which freed up Bellingham for his consummate finish

| World Cup anyone? on 23:09 - Jul 19 with 2466 views | EllDale | Not quite sure who is the most dislikeable Argentinian player. Had it narrowed down to Enzo Fernandez or Simeone but Paredes is running them close. | | | |
| World Cup anyone? on 23:19 - Jul 19 with 2429 views | Yorkshire_Dale | We will never get that time back after watching that borefest. Let's get back to Club football and get our season up and running. | | | |
| World Cup anyone? on 23:26 - Jul 19 with 2410 views | D_Alien | Argentina had one attempt on goal, in added time of extra time, and nil on target That stat is a disgrace to the game of football, as are the team itself. But we let them beat us... Tbh, i wouldn't have fancied our chances against Spain if we'd made the final, but at least we'd have created some | |

We watch because we like football but the World Cup is now a joke competition. We'll probably carry on watching it but its meaning now compared to what it was is minimal at best. Sod the corporates. Roll on Newport away for some proper football. UP THE DALE

| World Cup anyone? on 00:15 - Jul 20 with 2338 views | frenzied | Generally a decent tournament overall with the best moments found involving the teams such as Cape Verde,Haalands goals against Brazil, the rise in quality from Japan,Morocco and the USA. Final was awful,at least Argentina lost with all their usual sportsmanship on display during and after the game. Wengers idea of a World Cup every 2 years should never see the light of day. I think England play Spain next in the league nations thing in Sept . Then onto the Euros qualifiers and the event itself here in 2028. | | | |
| World Cup anyone? on 06:55 - Jul 20 with 2205 views | NorthernDale | Did the Spanish goalkeeper have a shot to safe last night, Spain dominated the game from start to finish, without creating much. One difference between Spain and England, when playing Argentina, was when Spain made changes, they brought attacking players on, whereas England brought on defenders. I did have a chuckle when Simone was fouled and the ref did not give anything, he was fuming, this from a man who seems to go through games fouling the opposition and expecting to get away with it. Also Peredes, who came on for Argentina and got booked almost straight away and spent his time fouling, was a disgrace. In fact, Argentina's behaviour was a disgrace last night, I feel sorry for Messi, who is such a talented footballer. [Post edited 20 Jul 7:05]

It’s part of their DNA. I was at the Germany v Argentina QF in Cape Town in 2010. Horrible team, horrible fans. Takes a lot for me to cheer for Germany, particularly since they had just beaten England with that Lampard goal that never was.
| World Cup anyone? on 08:26 - Jul 20 with 2100 views | EllDale | Such behaviour isn’t exclusively confined to South American teams though. I remember Holland being pretty disgraceful in the 2010 final against, coincidentally, Spain. Didn’t Howard Webb show over a dozen yellow cards in that game? I agree with the post above; it’s ok every four years but I’m a bit relieved that the whole circus is moving on. | | | |

To be fair, as much of an idiot as Infantino is, the 3rd place play-off has been part of the World Cup since 1934!

Messi isn't above a bit of shithousery himself though, and as captain could've attempted to calm down some of his obnoxious teammates. As far as I'm aware he didn't.
| World Cup anyone? on 17:42 - Jul 20 with 1545 views | EllDale | I thought that Messi was a peripheral influence on the game last night in every sense. Cristiano Ronaldo gets criticised for not tracking back but Messi showed a similar lack of appetite to become involved. And yet when he does spark into life….. | | | |
| World Cup anyone? on 18:43 - Jul 20 with 1468 views | Daley_Lama | Messi’s biggest influence last night was by trying to get Cucurelia sent off for covering his mouth and abusing him, hausery of the greatest order. It is with the greatest pleasure that the dirtiest, cheatiest, favouritised, nastiest, horriblist team were shown that they were rubbish at football, failed to have a shot for 117 minutes, never had a shot on target at all, despite having the most talented player ever IMO. No world cup No golden boot The world saw Argentina for what they are on the greatest stage. Couldn’t really have gone better. | |
