Real end to end game...very open. Enjoyable watch and worthy of a point. Yes we should be defending better for the first 30 minutes of the second half, but we didn't give up and Hendo rescued us again. So much better than the performances we saw at the start of the season. Anyone know why Mani was missing?

After promotion I said to my Dad that this season I just wanted to turn up, no pressure going into a game and just go out and enjoy ourselves while never in danger and not really threatening the top. Last season was pretty stressful being scared go drop points, turned out beautiful but I aged 5 years.

That game tonight was a far cry from the national league. It’s was fast, frantic and evidently better quality than the league below. Every team that’s been to here have been energetic and ‘up for it’. Shrewsbury was a flattering scoreline - but they weren’t abysmal nor were we great.

It’s nice to be back. Tonight was fun. I think a draw flattered us after a poor second half but we take it, we learn from it and we move on.

It’s clear the central midfield is the area in question. Not fully convinced on Adeeko, Gilmour has now found some sharpness and looking far more assured but you can tell he has hit his ceiling and it’s likely we won’t get much more out of him, Francis for me just isn’t what we need and yet to actually see him control a game. Petit has more presence and seems to be more involved but again, big step up and never really got a chance last season so a big ask for him when he finally returns.

The immediate craving for me is to see us control a game for 90 minutes. We are seeing glimpses of what the plan is, but we drift in and out of it.

4 points from tonight and the approaching Accy game would be lovely. Let’s see if we can roll back the years and do a job on them like we used to.

As other have said. Tasker was brilliant and my MOM. Ian’s in game management still leaves me a little bit bemused. Generally does what my brain is thinking but after a goal rather than to prevent a goal. Sub no.2 being the example.

Really enjoyable game for the whole match. Middleton again, especially first half was brilliant at whipping those balls in, and his cross early on - I thought Brown might have dived for that one to burst the net. Dale were tenacious and up for this one. Either side did enough to win it, a well earned draw against an energetic Grimsby who looked better than their current league position.

Agree with your first paragraph, it is panning out like that. The only worry is ensuring we increase the gap from the bottom two in case there’s a bad run.

Which is why I disagree with the second paragraph! The quality of teams is all much of a muchness with few truly controlling games. There is more physicality and it’s quicker, but the basic standard of play is very average so far - possibly because of how frantic it is. That said, Grimsby were the best team I’ve seen albeit easy to get at when you go wide.

It’s interesting to see reactions to games though (not specifically yours BtB!). Something that was discussed on the podcast last week was performance v result, is winning above everything or does a good display trump that? Maybe entrenched opinions to suit an argument sometimes ensure it reflects on how sone view a game/result?

As long as fans continue to support, that’s the main thing!

Yeh your second point is valid. No one team has really played us off the park and looked silky. Grimsby were good tonight but I felt most threatened by crosses and corners than being carved open in open play. You could argue it was self inflicted pain as both goals came down the left hand side and after a series of silly decisions, chances to clear and hesitation.

It’s certainly there to go at in this league but our injuries are the primary burden.

Until the new year I am points over performance. With a view of a few tweaks in Jan. The only real target this season is staying in this league and everyone top down bottom up growing on the back of the experience.

I am sure Watson has seen enough now to know where the extra attention is needed. Collecting points will allow him to work on that without any distractions.

I thought the first half was one of the most enjoyable halves of football I’ve seen for a while. Ok we struggled second half but a hard fought point, a goal for Hendo & then we could have won it.

Give me a game like that any day rather than the last 3 years of facing 11 men defending behind the ball.

Forza Nerazzurri

My lazy take on the league is (at least stylistically):

League 1 is a poor man’s version of the Premier League
League 2 is a poor man’s version of the Championship
National league is a poorer blend of the two.

Talk about 100mph football! I'm not sure what Jim from last season would've made of it? Fair play to Grimsby for keeping it up all game - they've a very effective away of playing putting in lots of high bouncing balls and putting defenders under pressure. Well done to Dale for somehow finding a way of getting an equaliser. And we could've nicked it at the end with Brown ballooning over and Middleton's deflected strike bouncing agonisingly wide! Happy with a point as it looked like we weren't getting anything for most of the 2nd half. Hopefully Beckwith will start on the left on Saturday and Tasker back on the right - putting Taylor there was an odd choice for me and cost us.

Can't see Beckwith starting yet. If Watson thought he could play 45 minutes he'd have been on at half time tonight.

I'm not convinced Beckwith is yet up to playing for much longer than he has done. In the last 5 minutes, he was struggling to get back with any pace.

Although, with Taylor and Tobi now both injured, he may have to start on Saturday.

That’s a fair point about the opposition. Teams are more open, then you see games where neither team has control. It’s that the passing and choices are so average at times.

Can we find a way to gain control or do we continue to play in an open way? Think getting the right combination in midfield may be the answer.

Watson confirms Dieseruvwe out with a hamstring injury. He says they’re looking at why the injuries are occurring.

McNulty from then may have pointed at the opposition which would sit in, preventing a team playing so expansively. McNulty of this season would point at his team scoring freely at the top of League One.

It could have gone either way in a last ten minutes which were just as hectic as the rest of the game.
Ok, so Brown missed a great opportunity, but they had one cleared off the line when it looked easier to score and Waller had to make a stunning save as well.
How drained the players are though, both physically and mentally, with another game on Saturday is anybody’s guess.
If Tobi and Taylor are both on the injured list now as well as all the others in the treatment room queue then we’re down to the bare bones at weekend.
Perhaps the other alternative to playing Beckwith at leftback is to pick Sherring at right back and move Tasker back to the left?

He is indeed flying high in L1, and ultimately, perhaps he knew he could cut out having to adapt Dale to the new division by simply skipping to the one higher up with a team that already had potential

We've been through all the arguments about his style in the NL, they ended when we escaped at Wembley, but that should have us appreciating (as said before) our new era and the initial efforts to build from almost scratch, even though the ride might be more bumpy

Looking forward to Saturday against Accy who took a good point at York tonight, providing we can put a team out

I will take a point from that all day long. I thought we played better against Crewe than we did last night, but got the more positive result here. I’d felt we were starting to look a lot more solid in recent weeks, but that second half was more reminiscent of some of those August performances. The injuries obviously aren’t helping, either. The forced subs left us disjointed, especially at left back, and we stopped doing anything in the final third until Henderson came on.

Even in the first half, when we were the better version of ourselves, I thought Grimsby looked the more likely to score overall. Our goal came after a spell of them peppering our box and goal, and up until then we’d had Hayes and Middleton creating at least a few half-chances.

Maybe I’m expecting too much, I don’t know. We’re closer to the play-offs than the bottom two in terms of points and, ultimately, that’s all I want from this season, then hopefully kick on again next year.

It was an entertaining game, granted, but to pick up on something 442 raised about being entertained versus winning, I’ll always maintain I’d take both, but if I have to choose, give me the latter all day long. As 442 also said, points, however we can get them, will keep us away from that bottom two for as long as possible.

Something definitely needs to be looked at with the injury situation, though. The current rate of injuries is quite simply unsustainable and could very realistically derail any positive momentum we’ve built up in recent weeks.

With us seemingly running out of steam later in games, I wondered if Hayes could be used as an impact sub until he is up to full match fitness. He could cause real havoc amongst tiring defenders. Providing our tiring frontmen could keep up with him, of course :-)

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

Agree with lots of that Fitz.
We couldn’t get out of our own half for a sustained period after the break. At that stage it was looking like men against boys in some parts of the pitch. It was a good draw because we were in the trenches there. Feel sorry for Taylor but will score him my first ever 4/10. His impact on the game ended up being detrimental. I really like Adeeko but he did himself no favours with the ref in the first half. I was expecting him to be hooked at half time for Taylor but the Tobi situation scuppered that. However he was instrumental in our best moments in the first half with excellent passes to Middleton for his chance and then the goal.
Tasker was excellent and the cameo from Hendo was exquisite. Henderson defies belief sometimes. It shows what clean living can do for you.
Struggle to understand how the progress on every injury is so slow. We never seem to get any injury that results in missing just a couple of games.
On to Accy. UTD

A 90th minute equaliser by Pearce for York.
Seem to have heard that somewhere before! 😀
Looking forward to Accrington as well. They could include a few old, familiar faces like Louie Moulden, David Tutonda and Connor Grant.
