FIFA World Cup thread. 12:02 - Nov 15 with 124304 viewsSnipper

I’m trying to get excited about this World Cup, but to no avail :-((.

I’ve just watched Sky Sports World Cup preview with Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Carragher & Karen Carney. Utterly depressing viewing. Same old, same old. Picking players for the starting XI not playing for their clubs, or totally off form.

I’m hoping this thread can get the juices flowing.

Do any of you think England have a chance?

Valencia was clearly offside when that penalty was taken.

The Qatar defence reminds me of ours when we had Rehmen and Stewart playing together

Need to start throwing some more cash at this.

Always thought Scotland would make a great World Cup host on it’s own.

Already has transport infrastructure, accommodation, and 12 or so stadiums (including Murrayfield) that could be used as venues.

12? Okay, I'll give you Hampden, Celtic Park, Ibrox and Murrayfield but the next biggest club ground after Celtic and Rangers is Aberdeen's Pittodrie at 21,000.

Well you can't call it boring.

But Qatar are in the wrong competition really.

Increasing capacity is the point isn’t it?

If we’d won in 2018 we’d promised to increase Plymouth, Bristol, and Milton Keynes.

Scotland has a great foundation for a WC.

Worth noting that from 2026 the World Cup will be a 48 team tournament so more stadia will be needed from hosts. Perhaps partly why it’s USA, Mexico and Canada in 2026 with Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile bidding to co-host 2030.

I didn’t know this.

It will have to be a Scotland - Ireland - England - Wales - France - North Korea hosted tournament instead.

What abomination will they use to get that many down to a last 16?

8 groups of 6, 6 groups of 8, 16 groups of 3, 3 groups of 16, Saturday Tuesday Saturday tuesday? It’ll go on for ever.

Whatever, I won’t bother to join in until the last two weeks.

All three have bigger populations than Aberdeen, Scotland’s third largest city. Unless you’re going to put artificial pitches in and play round the clock, you’ll be left with a lot of white elephants. I imagine independent Scotland would have more pressing demands on their budget.

You don’t need to build a 60,000 capacity in every stadium. Upgrading a 15,000 stadium to a 30,000 one won’t creat tons of white elephants.

Belgium hosted a Euros with stadiums of 25,000

A lot of their stadiums, particularly Easter Road and Tynecastle can't be expanded because their current location has a small footprint. Both have been looking to move for ages but I suspect that like us in west London, suitable land in Edinburgh close to their spiritual homes is at a premium.

If they did expand them or even build new stadia they would most likely end up like Portugal after Euro 2004 with a lot of grounds too big for the clubs that use them.

Pittodrie as an example at 21k currently is plenty big enough for Aberdeen who generally tend to average about 15k (they also averaged this in their 80s Fergie glory days as well).
