| Tonda is doing a great job 12:18 - Dec 21 with 1155 views | Heisenberg | It’s unbelievable people are starting to call out Tonda Eckert. From WAC to he has to go or he’s reverting to rusty ball. 9 games. 6 wins. 2 losses and one draw isn’t it. That’s 19 points from 9 games and if replicated over a whole season would give us 92 points and almost certain automatic promotion. This from a manager who inherited a team that couldn’t win, didn’t have a settled side and was looking more at relegation rather than a possible play off position. It’s his first job, he is bound to make mistakes and get things wrong from time to time but I think he’s a breath of fresh air. Yesterday showed we need a striker who can get on the end of crosses. If we can get that either through a loan or getting Stewart fit then there is no reason we can’t push on up the league. Merry Xmas. | |

It’s unfortunate for him that he’s also inherited a situation where realistically, due to no fault of his own, automatic promotion is almost certainly now out of the question. What was noticeable to me yesterday was how much stronger the Coventry players were both physically and mentally than us. Effectively a man short at half time they gave it everything to hang on to a result. Contrast that with our last two away performances where we folded in both second halves and ended up with nothing. A new manager can dictate tactics and substitutions but at the end of the day his players must “ want it”. That’s why Coventry are walking the league and we are, despite spending £50 million in the last window, merely playoff hopefuls. [Post edited 21 Dec 12:41]

A few years ago the difference between ourselves and top of the league was a 4,1 and 5,0 scoreline. Cov were well organised at 11 men, and you can see why they are top, however we had them on the ropes for a good portion of the game; there is no one to fear in this league. Onwards and upwards. Merry Christmas to you.

To be fair, I'm just chuffed to bits that we got rid of ginger gamer boy when we did. Anything was an upgrade on him.

'Tis the season to be jolly...good will to all men and all that happy horse shit. Six points off 3rd place with 24 games left if I'm not mistaken.

| Tonda is doing a great job on 15:56 - Dec 21 with 801 views | kingolaf | He’s done well but my fear is that he is a one trick pony with his 5 at the back. Leaving 3 centre halves on against 10 men was criminal. Taking Jander off and then just dropping Azaz back was ridiculous. | | | |

Added to that Tonda is a young guy with a great attitude, clearly a lovely fella, what is not to like? Merry Christmas Heisy and fellow Saints fans!
| I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it. |

Tbf hes done a pretty good job tho and we've seen a few performances that befitting the comparative riches he had at his disposal. I would like us to put in a 90 minute performance though. We seem to get a few ahead then paralysis sets in. As for Saturday.... no one minds a young coach making mistakes but we should at least be able to understand what he was trying. He claimed that sending baz up for corners at the end was because he wanted to win the game. Well maybe don't play the entire second half with 3 centre backs against 10 men then. That made no sense. Overall, and speaking as a sceptic, hes made a decent start, but we have the team to be top 6 minimum. Anything else will be an under-achievement.

I initially thought it was wrong to leave on 3 centre backs, but when I thought about it there were some good tactical reasons for doing so. Firstly we were going to get a lot of corners and set pieces and the only height we had in the team was the three centre backs. We sent up Bazunu for the last two corners in injury time, no one sends up a keeper for a corner as a normal tactic throughout the game, so we needed the height. Secondly we needed to keep Quarshie on for his pace to contain a breakaway which was literally there only attacking threat, the long ball punted up. So we couldnt take him off and needed the other two for their height. Thirdly if we got a second goal then they would have dropped their park the bus tactics and gone for it, so we needed to have our defensive shape intact. Of course in hindsight we didn't get the second goal, so easy to criticise, but I can see what he was trying to do, if we had taken a defender off and then scored and Coventry had come back at us and scored we would be complaining about taking off a defender

Im with you in that i didnt want him and still dont. I think the good run was in part down to the players bothering to turn up. Clearly they didnt play for Will Still. I think the group of players we currently have are a bunch of c u n t s and have a poor attitude. That said i live Leo and Fellows! The last couple performance's have been poor and we have gone back to messing about with the ball at the back.

You nailed it. Long gone are my days when CB's were big fat guys who couldn't run. Now they are athletic and versatile..( or damn well should be ). After the sending off , at least one CB can adopt a role that either pushes him into centre-mid allowing a higher attacking shape or asks him to perform what us old fookers call a sweeper role covering the wing backs who can be relieved of defensive duties and prioritise attack. Conceding a second when 0-1 would have been terminal. Eckert had to punt that we get ahead and then revert to starting shape and park our bus. to see the game out.Yes, the go ahead goal didn't materialise but the tactic of keeping 3 CB's was logical. Amateur statto alert !!...In this league 60 percent of teams scoring first win....60 percent of teams down to 10 men lose...So, we had one half of the former and one half of the latter which in my mathematical pea brain suggests a draw was the most likely result. Funnily enough.....

Fair points and it's easy in hindsight. That said, the chances were that Coventry would circle the wagons which they did. It also means that they would back off and let us have the ball, or more specifically let our 3 centre backs have it. None of them are that good on the ball and they aren't the players you want on the ball when trying to unpick a packed defence. I think it's a bit of a stretch to say what if we made the change then Coventry scored - we would need defenders. They would still only have ten men! I just don't think he should be scared of the opposition. There are times to go for it and let them worry about us.
