| World Cup anyone? 16:59 - Jun 11 with 65016 views | Yorkshire_Dale | With all the comings and goings and excitement at San Spotty,is anyone getting remotely interested in what is just about to start over the pond? I think, looking at the England squad we have a really good chance.....there is a depth of talent without doubt. Must say though I am not getting the purple haze about the competition and prefer to follow what's going on locally. Just hope Haiti do well. What do others think? | | | | |

I've always thought the dirtiest game was the Intercontinental Cup Final between Man Utd and Estudiantes (predecessor to the World Club Final) in 1968 Some of the worst "tackles" i've ever seen, and would see players jailed for assault these days. Can't remember how many players were sent off over the two legs, but many of the Utd players were lucky to still have both legs [Post edited 5 Jul 12:43]

He should have booked at least four whilst all the messing around waiting for the penalty. Whilst looking at some historic "rough houses" an English Cup Final replay at Old Trafford that I was fortunate enough to go to between Leeds and Chelsea in 1971 would still take some beating.

Stiles was given the nickname "the assassin" by the Argentine press beforehand Then, when he stepped off the plane, the awaiting crowd laughed when they saw how small and apparently frail he was Before he was sent off, for one of the more innocuous tackles, he'd been repeatedly head-butted, kicked and spat on, off the ball [Post edited 5 Jul 21:22]

His second goal was a copy of Manny D’s second at Aldershot last season. Deserved win for the impressive Vikings against an average Brazil team.

England have been the best I've seen them under Tuchel given the intense situation they are in. Impressive. Un-phased by the atmosphere and playing as a proper team. Still a lot of work to do and Pickford has stopped a 1-2 to us being a 3-2 to Mexico. We go again.

Epic history making performance, Pickford was commanding at the back which must have given so much confidence to the defence. Can they repeat the performance v Norway. England not known for back to back impressive performances.. Hope it’s not back to Ghana/Congo
| World Cup anyone? on 08:25 - Jul 6 with 2062 views | TalkingSutty | It's refreshing to watch and listen to Thomas Tuchel, in comparison to the boring, politically correct Gareth Southgate. Tuchal is pro-active, he wears his heart on his sleeve and is clearly not a yes man for the FA. The timing and use of his substitutions is also impressive. He shows his emotions which is something the fans can relate to. His interviews are worth listening to, he tells it how he sees it and doesn't try to sugar coat below par performances and insult the watching fans intelligence in the process. He doesn't stand motionless on the sidelines with his hands in his pockets when change is clearly needed and he doesn't pretend to be perfect. At the start of every World Cup and Euros i always see reaching the last eight as par for the course for England, not because we're poor, i just think there are another half dozen or so teams who are also just as capable as England. Whoever wins it wont do it on ability alone, they'll need luck on there side also. When you add everything into the mix i'd put the win in the Azteca last night above the 1-5 demolition of Germany, the players had to overcome so much adversity against a Mexican team who also played very well on the night. A game that will go down in history, a iconic victory in a stadium that Mexico very rarely lose in. That can never be taken away from Tuchel and his players, also those England fans who were lucky enough to have witnessed what was a once in a lifetime win. For any Dale fans in attendance they must think all their birthdays have come at once, having also just seen their team win promotion at Wembley stadium. Probably the best couple of months of their life's. [Post edited 6 Jul 9:04]

| World Cup anyone? on 10:31 - Jul 6 with 1834 views | NorthernDale | It was a nerve ending game, the referee did well for most of the game, but towards the end started to lose it. He was under constant pressure from the fans, who seem to want to referee the game, which you would expect in the Azteca, but he was also constantly badgered by the Mexican team, demanding free kicks, penalties and English bookings. I watch Brazil vs Norway before the England game, Brazil approach was the same, in that they seem to appeal for free kicks every time they got tackled and again the penalty they got was even more soft, then the one given against Kane. I must say the South American VAR team were a joke, they seem to give everything against England. Henderson booking was absurd, booked for warming up, apparently he broke his wrist when he fell. Absolutely - the best of Southgate's patriotic character and Tuchel's flexible tactics; not the best individual players but ....... | |

If last eight is par for the course the much maligned Southgate did rather well to get us to two finals and a semi final. And the games v Ghana and Congo were as turgid as anything the fans have had to suffer over the last decade. Yes last night was miraculous. A performance for the history books…let’s hope the team can show the same spirit v Norway…but the manager has a fair way to go to match what Southgate achieved. I hope he can do that…and more.

He's capable of matching Southgates achievements in his first tournament. Southgates football was boring to watch and when it came to the big moments in games he bottled them..the final against Italy being a good example, frightened to death of losing so fails to seize the momentum of a early goal. I understand there are some fans who still mourn his departure, he won us nothing though. Hopefully Tuchel can emulate him given the time. This squad isn't strong enough though i don't think, but you never know.

and Ghana/DRCongo weren't turgid affairs? Southgate brought pride, bonding and no little success to a national team which, as Bellingham said last night, often crumbled in the past. Tuchel has built on that using many of the same players with more in-game tactical flexibility and a justified obsession with balancing a team rather than stars.
