Last night was probably the first time I’ve genuinely seen what I think Watson is trying to achieve with his style of play, particularly the use of the wingers. There was a real purpose to getting them involved and stretching the game, and at times it worked really well.
It’s fair to say Shrewsbury helped us out by being pretty passive, but as the well-trodden cliché goes, you can only play what’s in front of you. We did that very well last night.
The defence deserves a lot of credit too. Yet again we had to reshuffle because of another injury, but they dealt with it magnificently. Dan Moss was imperious and, dare I say it, Taylor’s switch from left wing to left back may have uncovered a new calling for him. He looked very comfortable there.
And three very well-taken goals, all of them pleasing on the eye. We’ve not had any games this summer where you can sit back and actually enjoy watching the goals go in, so that was a welcome change.
There are still things to watch, though. Our defence has crumbled when teams have really put us under pressure, and Shrewsbury largely didn't do that. The big question now is whether this new-found confidence at the back can stand up when we're put under much greater pressure.
The other obvious point is that, as good as it was to get three goals, sooner or later we need our 9 and 10 to start providing more of them if we're going to be safe this season. You can't expect the rest of the team to keep carrying that burden.
All in all, though, it was a win Watson and us supporters desperately needed. I said previously that he needed to find a way through the injury crisis while, in fairness, the crisis itself seems to be worsening. Last night showed that he can do that.
I’m not expecting miracles this season. For me, a safe, consolidated finish is the minimum expectation. I don't want us anywhere near a relegation scrap. If Watson can deliver that, then I think most of us will continue to back him, as long as there are clear signs that we can push on in subsequent seasons. Once our squad is fully fit, or as near as can be, it should be more than good enough to do that.
Last night was a proper step in the right direction. Now let's see if we can build on it, especially as we have yet to play any of League Two’s more fancied sides. [Post edited 2 Sep 7:40]

Middleton and Smith operating on either wing is a mouthwatering prospect and as much as I enjoyed our time in the national league they're the kind of players we'd only see in a Dale shirt once back in the EFL. The 'baffling' decision to replace him with ZSD & move Moss to CB where many of us have wanted him to play (& Taylor to LB) turned out to be an answer to our previous lack of attacking threat - lucky generals are always better than good ones.
Agree with others about the effectiveness of Adeeko & Taylor and the fans but also as iW said post match the drive and lack of anxiety is what changed most - Moss first touch was an attacking run from LWB.
Certainly swallows and summers etc... on another night Shrewsbury score their 3 great chances... but so much better and a chance on Saturday to prove it wasn't a fluke.
IW certainly can't complain about any lack of financial support from the owners - anyone know when we last bought more players in a season? [Post edited 2 Sep 10:09]

It wasn't just Moss's defensive soundness, either
His more rapid turnover of the ball to our midfield, and Francis in particular, set the tone for our attacking momentum
Rather than slow, ponderous and inaccurate, our first ball was happening before the opposition had chance to settle. That's nothing less than transformational and must surely be the template going forward (in every sense)

I agree. It’s actually refreshing to see some real wingers. It was clear last night the ethos was to get that ball into the box and little behold our first goal came from that and shortly before Brown put a header over the bar that he should’ve done better with.
As a fan, I would rather watch that than the Jim ball passing around the edge of the box and recycling. Yes, it worked and we got out of the national league so it was job done. But, at times it was incredibly boring.
Last night left me with some hope that with the wingers we have signed, we are going to score goals and probably play with a bit more risk and freedom. But, with that we are likely to be to be exposed to counter attacks and better teams will capitalise. Likely to be some high scoring games both for and against.
On a separate note ss others have pointed out, Moss has fully put himself in the frame for the RCB role. I think his heart and desire alone is just what we need. He is mobile and busy. I felt far more assured. Wilson grew into the game too.
Brown is everything Rodney isn’t at the moment and he now has that 10 shirt.
Delighted for Ian and Carl and the club on a whole last night. It’s felt quite draining this last month and if we can follow it up on Saturday with a positive result then we can start to enjoy the ride a little bit rather than unpicking every little detail.
As somebody else said, really glad to see the crowd hold up to. Staying above 3,000 on Tuesday night games is vital. [Post edited 2 Sep 11:00]

Lots of positives from last night, and IW may have stumbled on a back 4 which works. As many have said Moss was probably MoM last night, rather than the choice on the night of Hannant.
Adeeko was a pocket dynamo in the middle, and Smith's late cameo was a glimpse of what we haven't seen since the pre-Jim days.
The scoreline was flattering however, and the better teams aren't going to miss the gilt edged chances that Shrewsbury did. IW seems a very passive manager - from around the 60th minute you could sense the momentum had changed and it was crying out for some tweaks. Maybe Smith's fitness had a big bearing on the time of his introduction, but Hendo could have come on much sooner for Mani.
IW's earned some more time, so lets hope this will be seen as a big turning point at the end of the season. | | | |

Just watched the highlights and pot match conference. Well done to IW and all of the players involved on getting a result which although flattering was well deserved.
This team will improve over time and hopefully consolidate out position in the league, especially once the injuries clear up. Hopefully starting with a win over Gillingham on Saturday.
Based on early results this is going to be an interesting league with only Bristol Rovers looking outstanding, so looking forward to plenty of entertainment!

The energy last night was excellent, although as somebody else said I thought the midfield subs should have come on 15 minutes earlier as we took some pressure through tiredness and we luckily didn't concede. Kane & Adeeko were my MOTM again both worked tirelessly and showed real class.

Thought the game management at the beginning of the second half was good..didnt sit back and let shrews have the ball too much.
