This bit is not true, though is it:

"I understand why they did it and what they were working against, but for me there was too much acceptance of mediocrity under Les and Lee's regime - basically we've got the 15th best budget in the Championship and so we finish 15th and can never aspire to or hope for more."

In 2019, they seized control of footballing appointments from the board after McLaren, appointed Warburton and finished 13th.

Encouraged, they invested in the team and finished 9th in 2020-21. But for Covid, who knows?

Encouraged even further, they invested again and really went for it. Manager, players, LF all spoke about it. They weren't doing what you describe at all. They were more explicit than anyone at club now, other than Dunne. Finished 11th. Disappointing.

But those three seasons are all better finishes than Nourry's three placings. They went for it again the next season with Beale and, well, it cost them their jobs. Not Hoos, obviously. He gave himself a promotion. But the others.

Worth pointing out that that 2020-21 play-off push was badly derailed by injuries too. It's not just happened under Ben Williams (I also have strong muscle memories of managers stretching back from Holloway through Francis to Jim Smith all saying "I've never known an injury crises like this...").

Let's not be revisionist. Nourry and Stephan are no more ambitious than Ferdinand and Warburton, their standards no higher. Imagine trying to tell either Les or Warbs you felt that. It's rubbish. They just have more money to play with. For now.

No need to invent recent history.

You know, having had he chance to sleep on it, you make a good strong point which while not fully in agreement I do concede.

Haha! Because I climbed upon A VERY VERY HIGH HORSE and wrote a reply to your reply, pressed send and the site had crashed so mercifully swallowed it up. Let's shake.

It's three seasons of Warburton, whatever the circumstances or backdrop. Finishes of 13, 9, 11. Not bad. Not enough.

Well run clubs who have a little ambition should, disaster notwithstanding, give managers three full seasons. I'm sure the plan is the same with Stephan. He's on season number two. I thought at the start it could be a top 8, perhaps 6 season. Looking like maybe a top ten now. Season three will be key, as it was for Warbs.

I think the ambition's the same, on the playing side. You only know how grumpy Warbs was about, say, Masterson because the club let you near him. Stephan is out of bounds to all beyond a zoom. But for Masterson read perhaps Morrison, for Willock's hamstring perhaps Dembele's knee...

Nourry, Stephan, Warburton, Ferdinand, Betsy, Eustace, etc...ambitious football guys who want(ed) to win and succeed. Hoos, Gnanalingam, Reilly: no change there where the big calls are made. And we know where the fish rots typically.

I love Les as a player and think Warburton was our best manager since Warnock. But look where those “pushes” to get into the playoffs got us? So what if we finished 11th one season if we ended up close to breathing FFP again and with the squad that Gareth had to deal with in that 23-24 season.

You are right in that Nourry, Warburton, Les and Stephan are all equally ambitious. The difference is that now we are trying to buy younger and sell for profit, at the same time as trying to improve the first team position in the league. Before we got likes Austin, Johansen….focus on quality now, money on wages not transfer fees. Let’s not kid ourselves that we didn’t spend money before, we spent it on wages not transfer fees.

You have a point about the fag end of the Hoos / Ferdinand era BUT remember the early years were about reducing the enormous wage bill (post Hughes & Redknapp.)

Lee / Les managed to do that and keep us out or the third tier. Some achievement.

Maybe they served their purpose and it was time to move on but let’s not trash their legacy completely.

Players brought through in that era, from the same get 'bring in players for Dev-squad to grow into first teamers or sales' that we are doing now: Eze, Chair, Dieng, Manning, plus Amos, BOS , Willock and others like Owen who didn't work out through whatever reason, ie fitness, mentality.

Were they any better or more successful than same in class now of Morgan, Vale, Adamson, Bennie, Pearman, Scarlett...we shall see. We haven't sold or developed a single player yet. Some we bought to develop and sell are damagingly injured at regular intervals, such as Kone and Burrell. This summer we signed the old but injury prone likes of Kamara, Lamptey. Kemper's not exactly a child, nor Cirkin. I like them. But I also liked the signings of Johansen, Odubajo, Dickie and even Austin at the time.

And the only two young players QPR have brought through from Dev squad recruitment to sales for as long as we remember were signed and developed under LF, in that 2019 onwards era: Eze, Kelman. That's £20m brought in from zero fee paid. Over to you Nourry and Dev squad coaching team.

Let's not pretend it's different. That's club propaganda. And yes, those three Warbs years did damage when followed by Beale and Ainsworth. But let's not prejudge this year and next's campaign and the signings made. We spent two summers in a row but we have recouped FA. Let's see. The writing of history needs time's perspective.

That’s true and also isn’t it true that more and more clubs are spending big amounts now. You’ve got the likes of Portsmouth spending €10 million net transfers in one season.

Stoke have spent €32 million net transfer fees (transfer purchases less sales and €41 million gross purchases only). Wrexham have spent €39 million net on transfers. Both this season alone.

I asked this question before and didn’t get an answer then from anyone, which teams do we think we should be better than?

There are the three relegated teams that should be better than us.

Wrexham and Stoke should be better than us given the eye watering amounts they spent this season. Should we be better than Middlesbrough who’ve spent €25 million net this season alone and were very close to promotion last season with their old squad. Southampton who also have a parachute level squad and would’ve probably got promoted last season if not for spygate.

Then you’ve got Birmingham who’ve spent €54 million on transfers in the last three seasons and have a wage bill nearly double ours? Then you’ve got WBA and Swansea who’ve each spent around €13 million this season alone and big wage bills.

I’m not saying we should pack up and go home. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have ambitions. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have standards. Of course we should have some expectations. Coventry did it after all.

But it’s also not unreasonable to recognise that it’s a loaded deck we’re playing with. And sometimes when we lose at a team like Birmingham in the third match of a three match week it’s not just about standards it’s about money.

So us reaching 9th this season if we did could arguably be more impressive than Warbs doing it with the money he spent that season compared to what others were spending at the time.

My point was that we did spend money before. We have also got the age of the squad down. I do agree that it’s too early to judge the recruitment yet. We need to see how much we can get in.
I do think we are doing things differently but that doesn’t change the fact that the injuries are a complete mess again

We were just talking about ambition and standards. Clive said LF and LH were always happy to just par the 15th in the league based on wages. I disagree, saying the Warbs seasons proved that wasn't true. The money bit actually backs that up. Only we made some sales from the LF recruitment of Dev players.
Hopefully Morgan and Bennie will generate Eze and Kelman income...

The only thing we're doing differently is training at a brand new complex we own and are continuing to develop. We know when that was built.

What I find mildly amusing about all this is that we are now not a million miles away from JS's conjecture that we could have 8/9 players out injured and Kolli still won't get in if he's not giving 100% in training. Fingers crossed he still is otherwise it's Ridwan Hassan or Josh Wright on Saturday

Lets see where the recent pushes gets us as well. Could well end up the same again.

I can't see a massive difference to be honest of what we did under les and what we do now.

Under Les we signed young and sold for profit, Smithies, Freeman, Furlong, Eze, Bright, Manning etc We spent money we had brought in through sales which are not happening anymore. If Willocks hamstring hadn't exploded we could have sold hm in 2022 and reinvested again.

The current great hope for a big sale in Varane can't even get in the team anymore

That’s true and also isn’t it true that more and more clubs are spending big amounts now. You’ve got the likes of Portsmouth spending €10 million net transfers in one season.

All due respect, Nix. That feels a tad disingenuous. You’re looking at one season in isolation.

Over the past 2.5 seasons we have spent net about £20m. We know we increased our wage bill and operating loss in the first season too. We expect both worsened last year. Although I hold some hope the wage bill might have reduced this year given the ins and outs.

Some clubs have spent lots of money this season, but look at their net spend over the last 2.5 seasons. I doubt Portsmouth surpass us there. I’m pretty sure Boro don’t given their ample sales. The comparison picture changes significantly.

And also, it tends to be the year after heavy investment that teams improve because, as you have argued before, it takes time for players to bed in. So it’s the teams who had big net spend, not the season, but the prior one, who should be taking a step forward this year, no?

In the last 2.5 seasons we have spent gross more money than in any 3 year period since we were relegated from the Prem, and far more net spend than in any period. When we sold Eze, we spent about £5-6m of it. It’s why we had an operating loss of only £4m that season. The “gamble”/investment for that Warburton season was in signing our loanees on frees but big salaries. We sold no one that year, and our wage bill rocketed. But the wage bill, if I recall correctly, wasn’t much bigger than it is now (well, last couple of seasons).

I understand the logic to comparing ourselves to everyone else’s expenditure. But other teams have always spent. Our position in the wage bill league table always fluctuates (Ainsworth season starting at Watford we were 3rd bottom) to last season I think we’ll find we were mid table. Granted, we’re never top 8, so I understand the logic of saying we can’t expect to be top 8. And I don’t want to revisit the “standards”/“ambition” debate.

However, I also believe it’s important to focus on ourselves and compare what we achieve and achieved in the past. If we have the same wage bill as Warburton but also were able to spend net £20m when he was able to spend net a lot less, surely we should be hoping to outperform his results? If we finished 15th under Cifuentes (first season) with a wage bill in the bottom 3 and Dykes and Armstrong as our only two forwards, surely we should expect to improve if we spend £20m net and increase the wage bill? If we don’t, why spend the money? And what are we here for?

The reason is because the only way clubs of our size and with our lack of funds can progress is a player trading model. It was Les’ strategy (but he had to reduce the wage bill by 3/4s over 3 seasons at first) and could only spend £6m of the £16m Eze money). It’s Nourry’s strategy too, but he’s found himself in a much better financial position (given the Ainsworth season) and has been able to spend £20m net in 2.5 years (albeit the gross spend was amortised). I’m sorry, but we should expect progress from that.

At the very least we should expect to sell some of these investments for big bucks, so we can reinvest again and get the model working (like Brighton, Brentford, Bournemouth, Millwall, etc). Get the model humming and you shouldn’t even be looking at net spend, we should be net neutral! Buying low, selling high, buying low again, etc).

And this gets to me back to my hobby horse: injuries.

We have spent our money. We’ve placed our bets. We need to sell player(s) in Jan or next summer for serious money, so we can reinvest in the squad (e.g. sell 1-2 players for £15m, spend £10m on 3-4 players, pocket £5m). That is the model. That is how the squad improves and how/why a net spend comparison becomes redundant.

To sell players for big money, one thing must happen and one thing helps if it happens:
1) the players need to be fit and playing. No one spends big money on crocks or players with injury disrupted seasons. Two of our three biggest assets are probably Burrell and Madsen (Edwards the other) and they are currently injuried again, having been injured for the last half to a third of last season. If we don’t sell one of both of them this summer, they’ll be getting to an age where their value starts decreasing even if they are fit and playing. Kone is injured. Poku has done his hamstrings 3 times since joining us. Saito is injured and hasn’t done much. Celar is gone. Dembele is returning from an ACL after two poor seasons. Who is fit and and could be sold for big money? Ronnie Edwards. It’s not a good position. It’s why improving this area is critical, and not taking action is simply bad for the club.

2) (Helpful to happen) - you finish fairly high up the league. This means your players will have played well, other clubs are likely to notice, and demand is likely to be higher. You can sell players who big money even if you have stood still as a club as far as the league is concerned. But it is a lot harder.

Look, I still think this squad is better than what we’ve had since we were relegated. I think it’s a better squad than Warburton had. I think we can still finish top 8. I want us too because it is the best thing for the club. I want Nourry to nail the player trading model because it is how we’ll get stronger as a club.

But the whole strategy on and off the pitch is being killed by our injuries and the “performance” of the Performance department. It is a gross failing of the CEO not to deal with this. It’s critical for the club he does.

I think/hope we might sneak a result on Sat. After Swansea we have Southampton away, then Burnley and Lincoln at home. Hopefully we can get 7 points from these 4 games. If we pick up just 3 or 4 though, we’ll very quickly be bottom half before we enter a very tough run of fixtures through to Christmas. I think the mood around the club could change quite a lot. I think Stephan feels this too, hence his tone in that interview. It is infuriating to be in this position, especially when we’ve been managing minutes so much already this season, almost certainly costing us points, to try to prevent it.

Without the injuries I think we could be top 8 and should be top 10. Why should Swansea or West Brom be above us after last season? Why should anyone currently below us finish above us? There as many reasons against as there are for. Everyone is in different cycles and facing different challenges.

With injuries, it’ll be very hard. But injuries are part of football. It’s the responsibility of the people you hire to own the fitness/condiyioning/medical/physio department (whatever you call it) and the recruitment dept to minimise them and the accountability for it all rests with the CEO. Injuries in any sport are not, and never have been, “bad luck” when viewed across multiple seasons.

I wasn’t “trashing” their legacy. A slight overreaction to my post I think. They went for promotion, I wanted promotion. It didn’t work out. We move on.

I wasn’t particularly saying ‘you’.

I said let ‘us’ not, as I have seen a lot of revisionism about the Hoos / Ferdinand era posted on here.

But if the cap fits?

Yeh, sorry, my fault, and TK right to pull me up on it. It was a throwaway comment to lead into my main point, but it was likely unfair and I should have thought more carefully about it.

I agree, but perhaps because Vale has frustrated the hell out of me lately.

I don't see Edwards in midfield if Jimmy is injured. We will need Ronnie at the back, the only right footed alternative is Morrison.
