| Injuries on 18:38 - Oct 14 by FDC | Is there evidence of similar issues globally and in other sports? Genuine question I've no idea |
I don't know how you could possibly pull that apart as a data point from general trends in fitness/play style/whatever over the last 6 years, there's not really a control group you could find.

| Injuries on 17:17 - Oct 14 by queensparker | I don’t want to derail this thread into conspiracy theories and paranoia, so I apologise for what I’m about to say, but I have several family members in medicine and it’s a known after-effect of COVID that it can potentially cause issues to muscles / joints / ligaments / recovery. NOT the vaccine, Covid the actual disease. Given I imagine everyone in the world including sportsmen has now had the infection at some point, I wonder if this might be a factor. |

| Injuries on 14:27 - Oct 14 by Stainrod | Fair enough mate and thank you for clarifying. And not at all, me thinks (for what it is worth) you are a good poster…. Sounds like we are not a million miles apart in that case. Agree subs shouldn’t be entirely pre-determined unless someone coming back from injury; you are right there needs to be a bit of responding to circumstances in the match. I suppose all I would say is that we don’t know for sure that these are not Stephan’s calls. Or he might be happy to take the medical advice. He also has access to the in-play data so he might be being told that player x is running less or slower or whatever. Hopefully those in the dugout are working as unified team just like the players on the pitch. |
I think he absolutely agrees with the approach. I’m sure he actually said it himself at some point that he recognises the need to listen to advice. At one point yesterday you could see Smyth just missing a couple of balls where he’d been completely on it before and he was straight off. So yes I do think they’re monitoring tiredness. I disagree about predetermined removal of players though. Some players with their playing style will be more likely to get injured - so players that make a lot of sprints. Also it takes into account how many minutes they’ve played recently, and the amount of work they got through. I’m sure it’s emerged from the report they commissioned about injuries last season so if they’re following the recommendations from that then it makes sense to me. Burrell and Madsen last season almost certainly got injured from being overplayed and we don’t want that this season. Unfortunately we were not able to influence the Burrell one because of the frigging international break.

Well who knows? But the main difference brought in by Covid is the five subs rule - meaning that physical intensity goes on for longer over the 90 minutes (these days even more e.g. 100 minutes last night!) and players are working at their limit for longer. Hence all the soft tissue injuries and them breaking down more often.

| Injuries on 13:23 - Oct 15 with 272 views | ManinBlack | When you have a three game week, it really doesn't help when they add on 10 minutes stoppage time in a game that was done and dusted. Derby just wanted to get off the pitch and go home and we were just seeing out the game a man down. I understand the time being added on to the full extent but in the circumstances last night the additional time was not going to change the outcome. I don't think either side would complain if only 4 minutes added on as it was 4-0 not 1-0. The longer you keep tired players out there the more likely they succumb to injury. We nearly played a full half of extra time. | | | |
