| Refwatch - Port Vale v Rochdale on 14:41 - Oct 31 with 2847 views | beat_the_bishop | People need to stop blaming injuries. The man has brought 17 players through the door. Only one today from the ‘originals’ of last season started. It’s his team and it’s his mess. Injuries a factor but why are these players here if they aren’t good enough? That is the only reason he hasn’t blamed injuries because he knows he’s thrown our budget down the drain. The board are just as culpable. They have selected him and then backed him. Both as inexperienced as each other and it’s bleak viewing. | | | |

| Refwatch - Port Vale v Rochdale on 14:31 - Oct 31 by SJE_Dale | I thought we actually played quite well 2nd half. 1st goal came too late in the game but we stopped the rot and actually controlled a game for 45 minutes. If he's to keep his job I'd like to see the same system with the same players who finished the game starting. |
But to keep the same system he’d have to admit we should be playing with wingbacks. The recruitment of so many wingers makes that difficult. Putting that to one side, and obviously the injuries, but we’d be better off with a team made up of last season’s players (keeper aside): Moss-EEL-Beckwith TAR and Hannant as wingbacks Midfield three of Gilmour, East and Pettit Dieseruvwe and Henderson. We’d certainly look far more solid and in control of games with that X(I).

| Refwatch - Port Vale v Rochdale on 14:48 - Oct 31 with 2747 views | sxdale | Sky commentator just summed that game up perfectly "a sorry Rochdale team" Toothless up front and too weak all over the pitch. Scoreline actually flattered us. I want IW to succeed but having serious doubts about his ability. Pre season was poor and I thought under prepared for the rigours of a league 2 campaign. Other than Hayes, signings didn't fill me with confidence, IW recruitment felt a bit like a kid in a sweetshop (collecting wingers) reminded me too much of Stockdale. Poor start to the season, thought it would take a while for new system, new players to click and would have been happy with a season of consolidation, thought we had started to turn a corner but now right back at square 1. Sadly I don't think IW has the ability to turn this slump around. I don't think the players have the confidence in his abilities to lead them. He seems too passive a bit like Eyre was. With the games we have coming up I think we will be bottom 2 by December. Hope I'm wrong but my faith in IW is gone. | | | |

He’s also signed two perennial sicknotes in Smith and Maguire. Unforgivable

Accepting that Vale might have eased off 2nd half we did win it 2-1 so I agree with our players the formation seems to offer more control (under any manager) Maybe look to stay in the game for the first hour and potentially then tweak the formation and bring on wingers? Having seen 442s post - of course IW's recruitment choices don't help this formation change (or anything else it seems) but perhaps this suggestion makes the best of them - at least with the currently available players [Post edited 31 Oct 15:02]

Agreed that our national league team is way stronger than the current one. Brown, Duberry, Sherring, Wilson, Waller miles off it. Hayes looked knackered but within half an hour he'd played right wing, left wing and then number 10. Brown is crap and Mani D should start when hes back fit.

If you listened to IW's recent interview, its even more inexplicable that he's got such limited gametime this season. He's a seasoned pro, gets the fans onside, and there's never going to be any question of his effort levels. Oh, and he can score goals.

I thought Brown did well considering the lack of service and he made our 2nd goal - sadly Mani has been a lost soul this season so he's not the solution

| Refwatch - Port Vale v Rochdale on 15:16 - Oct 31 with 2375 views | Dalenet | So we managed to concede 4 goals against a side that has only scored 6 all season to date. We just looked lost in the first 15 minutes. If last week was "totally unacceptable" then what was today? We looked worse. There are plenty of well balanced and accurate comments in this thread that don't need repeating, but the Board has backed the manager to the hill, allowed him to bring in player after player, and they must now see the writing on the wall. It would be criminal to get relegated after all the effort that the Board and the team put in last season. | | | |

The master tactician would ideally wait until the games already lost then throw on Hendo, you wouldn't want to start the clubs record all time goal scorer then maybe take him off when he indicates he's blowing, he's professional enough to know and accept his limitations as/when he needs to be replaced.... i know it sounds bizarre

I would agree about Brown, but he needs some back up and a decent option to spell him, which we do not have at the moment. We have to stop conceeding goals. The spaces between the zones are too great and currently we do not have the players to play the type of game Watson wants, which relies on athletic midfielders and mobile centre backs who can cover a lot of ground. We need to go back to basic and simplify the game. Flood the centre of the pitch and try and control the game a bit more rather than being so open. A move back to wing backs and three centre backs could help in this regard, but there is a rot and it needs to be stopped.
| Refwatch - Port Vale v Rochdale on 16:01 - Oct 31 with 1989 views | Edindale | Our performance to-day particularly in the first half made Port Vale Look like PSG, and given the lack of improvement over the season it looks like we will now unnecessarily be dragged into a relegation battle. Injuries aside I do not understand our selection / formations and neither do the players by the looks of it. Furthermore we look second best to opponents in terms of fitness, speed strength and athleticism. Personally I think that IW is sound and I like his philosophy on the game, but unfortunately he is just not cutting it for me tactically. We have no trademark style and appear to be relying on two veterans for attacking threat and defensive stability. Confidence and morale is rock bottom by the looks of it. Other than Tasker and Brown I would send the loanees back as not being ready for the rigours of the EFL. Wilson and Flint are not a partnership and I am not sure why we signed Sherring. I previously rated Waller but can understand his drop in form given what is in front of him. Why we did not sign another forward given our lack of XG is not clear either with neither Mani or Rodney on the bench. Hopefully some of our injuries can return before the new year but this situation is indicative of our current malaise. Whatever decision is made on the manager, effectively we cannot trade until January and have 9 league games to try and pick up some points with the playing resources we have. It is debatable whether a new man could achieve better results with the players we have through more effective coaching etc. If the decision is to stick we need to see immediate improvements in performance levels rather than the current downward trend. Alternatively if it is to twist the new man needs time to assess what sensible changes he can make in January. I hope that the Board who have already shown patience is decisive one way or the other At the moment the only spark of optimism is that we might get a mini FA Cup run with a favourable draw if we can get past Fleetwood. | | | |

There is some flexibility as there are still plenty of free agents out there -Jamie Allen for one - and you can replace players in the squad if you pay them off ( Bilongo and Rodney would head my list ). We're also free to bring in another keeper ( more choice if Waller suffers a training "accident).

Paying up someone like Rodney would take a huge amount of money out of any possible January budget. We should look to reduce the numbers then though, would end Wilson’s loan and look to get one of the midfielders out on loan, Sherring, Silcott-Duberry and Smith too. A lot depends on getting people fit of course. We’re stuck with Waller until January so the first thing is to get him more protection. Flint’s form has dropped off badly, which isn’t helping. The loss of Dan Moss has been huge.

| Refwatch - Port Vale v Rochdale on 17:33 - Oct 31 with 1456 views | Daley_Lama | The abuse of Sam Sherring today was unwarranted and awful. There were far worse performances by others both this weekend and last weekend but he is the annointed scapegoat for some. After Flint played a poor pass today, a chap abused Sherring for it, he was that desperate to blane him. You can’t mistake the two of them. Not a game to be remembered, but Hendo scored a belting header. 5 at the back looked better after 20 minutes, then even better after 45 with Hannant on for Middleton at LWB. | |

The Sherring stuff on Twitter goes way too far as well. He’s been a poor signing but he isn’t deserving of the personal stuff. As you say, he was nowhere near the worst performer at the back today. Wilson needs a break and Flint will have less offers on the table after recent games. Unfortunately all have to play some part at the moment. We’ve just got to hope we can get to a point where EEL, Maguire and Beckwith are all fully fit.

| Refwatch - Port Vale v Rochdale on 18:04 - Oct 31 with 1242 views | 49thseason | Rodney's contract expires at the end of the season ...as does Mani D's, selling or paying them off in January might not be as expensive as not replacing them and getting relegated again...I would swap them both for a Cardwell or similar...maybe Southend would take our two in exchange? We are desperate for someone to make defending hard, physical work and create space for Brown and Hendo... no point in 5 wingers if there is noone to take advantage of their crosses... Equally we carry no great threat from midfield except perhaps Pettit... On a side note it was 2012 -13 when a club ( Barnet) was relegated with 50 or more points and currently we are tracking 49 (ish) but the trend is not our friend at the moment.. we need to target being on 25 + points by Christmas ( 8 more games 10-12 more points) and hope players returning from injury help us out... | | | |

We don’t play with two centre forwards in Watson’s preferred formation. We did latterly today when we went to a three man midfield and Henderson with Brown up front. Why would we go for Cardwell who has had one good scoring season in the NL three years ago, has since suffered from injuries and has no EFL experience of note? If he can’t get in Southend’s team, why would he be a better option than Dieseruvwe who we at least know could form a partnership with Henderson? Not against Mani leaving, can see the reasons for it, but he has to be replaced by someone we know is better. He hasn’t been so far, despite Brown’s best efforts.

Sounds like a right load of BS given today's performance and result. "It can't happen again" and we're three down in 22 minutes. Today's post-match is a rinse and repeat. He is proving incapable of effecting the changes needed. In league games only, we've conceded two 3's, two 4's and a 5 already. More goals in total than any other in the league. We're too easy to attack and he's making us even worse. None of his methods (if he has any) are working to halt this decline. It's also worth noting that we've lost to both the bottom two teams in the league as it stands tonight. Déjà vu Steve Eyre? His early season inexperience and inadequacies ultimately laid the ground for relegation from League 1. Relegation is not something we can risk again. [Post edited 31 Oct 19:45]

A very good and perfectly accurate post, yet there's still some on here it seems try and defend the completely indefensible, the most alarming point even when we did win a couple of games was how many chances the opposition missed in the process, the writing was pretty much on the wall back then that whatever IW choice of football may be it certainly didnt involve a solid base and some of his choices of subs and more so the starting 11 are baffling at best regardless of the injury list.

That's the real issue It's why i supported Watson early doors and it looked as if he might turn things around, with the board supporting him at the (heavily managed) fans forum Looks to have been a mirage. Stockdale also had a spell early doors when it looked like we were pushing the playoffs, prior to collapse So, if the "process" doesn't work, where do the board turn to? We all have our own ideas of what we need, and those with the responsibility of making that decision have less experience of the game. Still, it's their money on the line, so it can only be hoped they're reviewing not just Watson's position, but their own process
