Why take off Bilongo and put Hannant at right back? Stopped nothing all second half. Has he ever played right back before?

Presume their fans won't be writing to every organisation going tonight?

Maestro? No. Elite? No. Heavyweight poster? No. Able to be rational and not over-react to individual results? Yes.

I agree. Really feel for Watson, he’s obviously doing his best whilst trying to stick to his processes. It’s also worth noting that some players could be doing a lot more too.

They could for sure but in the main, they're his players so he can't blame that.

All of a sudden Aden Flint is starting to look like the 37yo footballer that he is. Struggled badly at Port Vale and all at sea again tonight.

Decent first half.

Donny created a few chances, so did we.

Beckwith looked decent until he went off
Sherring looked decent at CH until he went off
Dubberry/Paterson in front of Francis seemed to work ok.
Bilogo looked solid at CH
Wilson ok at RB
Hendo scored one (good work by Duberry) and could have had a couple more

Then half-time came and we reverted to our League team.

Wilson/Flint/Gilmour/Adeeko. Admittedly Donny made a couple of subs in midfield also at HT, but the change was notable from second half start.

We couldn’t play out from the back anymore, the balls into midfield were lost, all so familiar.

Hannant is not a RB. The only RB we have is Tasker.

Hope the two injuries are precautionary substitutions. Both needed on Saturday.

"It won't happen again" Watson makes it happen again. And again and again. Clueless.

Could Hendo take over for a couple of games before a more experienced hand could be found? We may get a bit of a dead cat bounce.

He'd struggle to do a worse job thats for certain

I think Hannant had a spell at right back in the Huddersfield game and looked less than convincing then.

The one thing I will agree with in Watson’s interview is the abuse Sherring is receiving goes far beyond thinking a player isn’t good enough. Seeing people trying to justify it is so poor too.

There have been others worse than him in recent games yet they (rightly) don’t get similar abuse. It needs to stop because it reflects poorly on the entire club.

Couldn't agree more.

Heard some even boo him tonight (younger lads, late teens) when going off injured after having a much needed solid start. Really poor from them seemingly trying to show off to their mates.

When discussing where to sit second half early on the conversation was
"Shall we move down that end second half" (towards Pearl Street)
"No because Sherring will be down this end"

It's not support, it's personal and disgusting and not the joke they probably think it is.

Doncaster made 9 changes from their Saturday team for the start of the game. We could and probably should of conceded three times in the first half. They stepped on the gas in the second half.

Can't agree that Wilson was okay at right back -very limited in this role.

Thought that Francis and Adeeko when he came on were anonymous.

Agree that the criticism of Sherring is out of order.

Absolutely. We've seen a lot worse players than Sherring, but even so, such abuse in game is just pathetic.

As for the rest of the interview, Watson's analysis is, as usual, borderline surreal. 13 (THIRTEEN) goals conceded in the last three games and he's saying "It's something to build on" and seems quite content with a lot of the game tonight. Has he found Graham Barrow's book of excuses? He seems to be living in a denial ridden world of his own where his affect on results and performances are concerned. Apparently "We have to get better towards the end of the game so that we don’t concede these types of goals". 0-3 down at half time in the last two league games (after the first it wouldn't happen again) suggests he doesn't have form for correcting such things. Nor do the three his team conceded 2nd half v Gillingham relative to the four v Doncaster tonight. Since the first friendly at FCUM Watson's defences have been mostly woeful. Now worst in League 2.

Sorry, but the bloke is well out of his depth in football matters, talks nonsense and is damaging RAFC. If the board can't see that now, maybe a big drop in attendances and 23rd or 24th position in the league table might be a revelation? Project 5000 is on its arse with Watson here. A change is needed. ASAP.

Can't argue with any of that

But... who's going to sort out his replacement (the process?)

I could be very wrong, and the board (under Gauge's footballing watch) have a decent replacement lined up

Or, he could be equally out of his depth, getting lucky with McNulty inducing a false sense of security and confidence by the Ogdens in his ability to guide the football side of things

I really do hope i'm wrong on this, but nobody else seems to be addressing it

Sad that Henderson club record appearances was in front of 645 fans. Surely things could have been manufactured a bit better than this.

Ever since I started watching Rochdale it feels like our only successful managerial appointments have come from within the club. Whenever we've gone outside and brought someone in it seems to end in disappointment. Steve Eyre, John Coleman, Robbie Stockdale, Jim Bentley and now Ian Watson. Unless Hendo turns out to be a great manager, I've got no faith in the club's ability to identify and appoint the right person from outside the club. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong

I’d be very reluctant to replace Watson if it’s Gauge and Delves leading the footballing side of things during the hiring process(as was suggested in a previous interview.) Unfortunately their track record in this has been absolutely shocking. There was talk of getting more footballing experience in the leadership team (DoF?), but I haven’t heard anything since on this.

This is the real dilemma. Watson is a Gauge appointment (Delves may be instrumental but ultimately one man should take ownership of the decision)

Notably, it was Gauge fronting up at the fans forum

Not sure the conclusion is that Watson should stay though, since that can never be the only option

Again, ultimately, those funding the project (5000) have to make a decision: around who's responsible for recruitment

This is NOT "having a go" at Gauge. If he's out of his depth, it should be recognised and changed, as with Watson

Much in the same way we got managers right (Hill) and wrong (Eyre) during the most successful era in the club’s history, it’s a case of looking at what goes right/wrong this time around. Without knowing the exact details of the decision making process, we can only go off things like the forum/the podcast interview with Cameron Ogden/info on the OS.

The luck element is huge when making a choice (Hill getting on a run when he wasn’t the no.1 choice/the injury situation this time around) but it’s what can be established as requiring improvement when looking at managers.

As we saw with McNulty, some fans can turn very quickly dependent on results anyway. Sometimes patience is required when it’s obvious that despite setbacks, the bigger picture points to real progress - as proven by the return to the EFL ahead of schedule. The problem now is that the bigger picture doesn’t seem to be clear. We can’t point to controlling games within a recognisable structure for example.

Can Watson achieve this? If not, is there a manager who can?

One thing we have learnt is that expansive football does not suit the players we have, as reflected in the results and stats.

I think it’s hard to term Hills appointment as “getting it right”.

Both the appointments of Hill and McNulty were seen as the most financially viable given the economic position that the club found themselves in.

It’s not like we will have had people banging down door and in spite of this, we chose to promote from within. He did of course make the position his own with the results he produced.

In recent memory, every external appointment (save one of Parkin’s spells has been a disaster). I’m not counting Hill’s return to the club for obvious reasons.

There has to be a long, hard look about how we appoint managers moving forward.

I would not be against bringing in a DOF to aid us in this endeavour (KH…?!) but however it happens, we certainly need some help from someone who has actually footballing nous.

No I agree, that’s the “luck” element of it all.

We could have had Andy Ritchie at the end of 2006 had things gone to plan and who knows where we’d be today.

Terry Dolan wasn’t a bad appointment!

Dolan was a curate's egg. Some of the football under him was as dull as can be, but there's no denying he was better than most around that era in terms of getting results. The cup run to R5 especially was probably his highlight, but not many were upset when he left for Hull City where he was responsible for 2 relegations. Think we were awarded compensation for him because Hull made an illegal approach.

Very true about the football. It was industrial at best and designed to get a goal and defend it. He did improve results though and we were competitive.

Yeah, fans weren’t that bothered when he left, and to be fair Sutton came in and did quite well for a while - another “lucky” appointment that worked out ok.
